4 player recording option

hi folks,

having to torture myself through some penances lately i was thinking of a way to get beyond my “plateau” phase i’m at right now.

so far i record every match of worth for later analysis and upload it for people who wanna watch.

getting forced out of my comfort zone i found that i lack external feedback that shows my performance through different angles.

ages ago one could switch perspective when watching recordings in matches like doom and quake 3.

granted those were simpler games and i remember the “out of sync” fails for doom i.e just recorded the players input, not the games real reaction.

quake 3(modded) though provided a plethora of camera options and switching through different “eyes” back and forth.

so would it be feasible to implement a recording mode where all 4 views can be captured, preferably in splitscreen ?

it would help my understanding of positioning and situation evaluation tremendously to see my mistakes unfold beyond my visible area.

anyone else using recordings to improve his performance?

Really cool idea! Someone with more mod experience than me could maybe chime in with an immediate response on feasibility, but I’m sure gonna look into it!

funkthemonk, who recently did the super cool mission mini-map dumps (no link atm, sorry!) and raindish were discussing this last month on the modding Discord. I dunno if they’re here to provide more info, but it sounds like it may be possible!

this is great news, thanks for the info

i understand it aint a dev priority given the state of the game, but in the long run, so many great matches are lost for people not recording them, so one out of four would increase the odds of it being saved for the ages.

plus as stated above, knowing my own limits i feel i can only move past my limitations by viewing my gameplay through the eyes of others.

glad i’m not alone in my wish for more tools to better myself. :+1:

I’ve cooled on it lately, but I was recording almost every match for months. I really think it’s the ideal way to improve, rewatching hairy bits and really studying what happened, what part of my kit was/wasn’t working, and thinking about how I could have done better positioning/prioritizing/etc.

Rocket League has a great game capture system. You can literally free-cam, follow-cam, or have a locked view camera, rewind and fastforward, etc. etc.

I suspect not possible in Darktide however sadly. There’s no P2P aspect is there, so it’s unlikely FS would let you vacuum up other people’s traffic.

I think adding this feature to an end of mission hub area would be awsome! This way you can break down what steps players are actually taking by seeing stuff from their PoV.

I would suggest playing Vermintide 2 (its on sale now) to help with positioning. The friendly fire in that game can quickly tell you if your taking bad angles or in the way. Darktide just feels like im bumping shoulders with my teamates and we are all trying to fit through the same door. Conjested at times, if your not first in line for the fight. I think this is a map design failure but i digress.

As far as the recording option I like it! @Jonboy mentioned it but I improved dramatcially watching replays on RL, im sure it can only help improve if implemented.

they could add a team wide servo skull accompanying you through the match and have them do their projector thingie in the designated mourningstar area.

simultaneously offering a “download” option for a
.mkv or similar file.

this would combine immersion with effeciency.

as for the vermintide idea, i am on the fence, oddly have it installed for a year as well.

but i just cant get into fantasy warhammer.
something about 40k thats so much more appealing.

come next vacation ill give it a shot though. :+1:

Most (all) games that have this sort of functionality achieve it by recording a script of actions that occur during session and regenerating the session based on that, sort of like using an instruction set to build an automated recreation of the session. That’s what allows you to get features like switching viewpoints, follow cams, fast/slow motion, etc. It’s also infinitely more resource efficient than making actual video recordings.

Sounds very doable, though I suspect such functionality would need some significant development.
