I also have a console so ?
And in the end, why does it even matter ? I’ve taken breaks if vt and DT before.
Heck the next 2 week I’m not gonna play video game at all so bite me dumbass
Edit:
Have actually checked, last played on console about a month ago, and 3 weeks ago for Steam siddons.
Space Marine is 3rd person so I’m already barely interested in it.
1st person games are much more my jam.
I’m sure I’ll play SM when it’s on discount but I won’t hang about with it like I do with DT.

Why are people so elitist about playtime and platform? Cactus does make a decent point that the game is technically still alive after several “darktide killers”. It’s not very alive, but there’s still an active and dedicated playerbase.
“OMG this new game is gonna kill our game” is nothing new. It’s basically a meme at this point. Overwatch was the TF2 killer, Last Epoch was the Path of Exile killer, HD2/DRG/SM2/whatever is the Darktide killer. None of these games are dead. Who gives a damn?

Do note that he isn’t saying that out of fear, he is saying that out of spite.
He dislike me cause I’m not a complainer, and yeah, I don’t complain, I usually just leave (TWW, OW, TF2…)
Space Marines are the whole reason I think most people got into 40k in the first place. That might not end up being the reason they stay, but it’s undeniable that the Space Marines are the stars of the whole IP and I’d say for good reason. It’s an incredibly potent and powerful archetype and to be able to embody one in something resembling a believable way is something I’m sure loads and loads of fans have been dreaming of. I can’t speak for anyone else, but once Space Marine 2 drops I most likely will not return to Darktide until I’m given explicit reasons to do so. Knowing Fatshark, that could be in years or it could be never. I’ve sunk over 2000 hours into it already and whilst I obviously profoundly enjoy the combat experience of it, what’s ultimately been the engine behind my engagement has been my love for the 40k setting. Already I can tell Space Marine 2 is going to scratch that itch for me better than Darktide.

Absolutely! Space Marines are the reason I got into 40k in the first place, but as I learned more about the setting, the more awesome I thought normal people doing the best they can with the tools they have were compared to the space supersoldiers, and Darktide perfectly captures that (maybe a little too well… these strike teams should have a much higher fatality rate in canon lol).
AFAIK, there aren’t any other video games that fit that same kind of setting, and I don’t much care for TTRPGs, so I’m not touching Dark Heresy - but if one comes out and it proves to be better than Darktide, I’ll for sure play a lot of that one.
All this said, Darktide’s choppy/shooty hybrid combat is incredible. If nothing else, that’s what’ll keep me playing.

40k has been poorly represented in the video game arena in general. SM2 feels like the first real blockbuster game of the setting, which is good to see. That being said, I’d totally love seeing other perspectives represented as well in the future. Give me a game called “Guardsman” and let me bear witness to the Fall of Cadia (never forget) in person. You could basically just take the SM2 format and reskin it into an Imperial Guard game.

I would want to see a Guardsman horror game tbh, maybe a Navis Breacher team that enter a Space Hulk and fall on Genestealer colonies

Ehh, I’m pretty sick of the claustrophobic and dark space hulk vibes of Darktide and, of course, Space Hulk at this point. The open skies and massive battles of SM2 are part of what makes it look like such a breath of fresh air to me. 40k being grimdark doesn’t necessarily have to mean it needs to be literally dark all the time.

SM2 looks very interesting and of course I will play it, but I don’t intend to stop playing Darktide because of it. Probably most people will. Everyone here loves Darktide. Even though we know that negative campaigning won’t make the developers speed up the pace of releasing content…
The gaming market is flooded with games and, consequently, competition is inevitable.
All competition is good as it forces any company not to be lazy. CoD MWIII at the moment is facing its first real competitor for years with XDefiant, and that will force them to adapt or take a hit on their bottom line.
DT dipped to 3.9K players yesterday, will rally with the new content as it always does, and then crash over the long summer months of people bricking the limited new weapons (only Ogryns can use the pickaxes if I’m not mistaken?) on the same hated crafting system.
The future is not bright.

Yes Pickaxes as far as we know are Ogryn only.
There might be more though

I agree up to a point: DT will always have customers. However, we were down to 2.9K on the Steam charts before the latest content drop, and the trend was clearly and significantly down.
Of course, that excludes the Console players, but if the numbers drop to a certain point FS will pull the plug as paying staff and running servers costs money. Remember, older players will have already bought the majority of what they want, so new blood is needed for the cash they inject into DT.
Does anyone know the number of players needed to make a game viable for a company?

That’s a very difficult number to give, as it depend to many internal criteria, and what might be viable for company A, might not to company B, or even worse, might be enough for company A, but not it’s owners (Eg: Tango Gameworks’ Hi-Fi Rush)

Me reading this (I had that idea first)

I‘ll definitely play the story of SM2. If and how much more I‘ll depends on how the game will turn out.
But until I get my milsim shooter allowing me to do some trench clearing in vraks as part of a death Korps raiding party I‘ll probably still gonna play Darktide once in a while.

I believe that Fatshark’s employees are also waiting for the release of Space Marine 2, so that after they come back from their summer vacation, they can fully focus on playing the new game. As for Darktide, they can just make some easy money by selling in-game cosmetics. Why bother creating new content? When the number of online players for Darktide drops below 1,000, they can make a tough decision and release Darktide 2

It will trickle along over years 1K active users, 4K, another month 3K.
If something big like talent tree it will spike then a month or 2 later will back to normal.
After 5 years you’ll expect numbers similar to VT2 as it is now.
So few years along still enough to match make in seconds but won’t be big 10K-15K players anytime soon. Adding some maps here and there gives temporary spike.
