The action is good but there is not any content atm and no promise of any content to come. We might as well just be playing the same map over and over at this point as there is not really any difference other than how hard stuff is to kill.
This is a game engine at this point its not a real game.
DRG has procedural generation of maps, but in between waiting for new seasons people are supposed to play the same “maps” while waiting for new content.
And DRG (And HD2 now) are some of the rare horde game that feature procedurally generated maps. And for some people, after a while the generated maps are as boring as running the same maps.
Which is still the majority of those horde games; Killing Floor 2 (2016; though KF3 will mostly be the same); Pay Day 2/3 ( 2013/2023); Back 4 Blood (2021)…
The matter remain that you’ll run through new content faster than it can be produced, and at that point it’s a game of repeating missions or waiting for the next update.
DRG is not DT, there’s mining as a core objective.
I am happy with DT keeping to its core identity, I think the worst mistake the devs could make would be to make new modes and things that split the playerbase and - frankly - would probably just die. Look at VT2 - Weaves were a disaster, barely anyone played Last Stand in VT1, only Chaos Wastes was apparently good (it did not appeal to me). I expect Vs in VT2 will be dead soon after launch, too.
Running missions with randomized enemy spawns is how this type of game works. Randomly-generated maps would be neat, but not actually play into the strengths of the game, I think.
I agree that I want more content, but I want more maps, weapons, enemies, and at least a new class or two. That’s all we really need, I think. For people who enjoy the core gameplay, it has nearly limitless replayability because it has an incredibly high skill cap.
. . . Well, I take one thing back; we probably need a higher difficulty or for modders to be able to make one, since the highest-skill players are really needing it.
I want to add, that running a well-known map can be a good thing and a feeling of nostalgia later on, if it is designed well.
As always it comes down to execution. Whether procedurally generated or hand-crafted, if it’s executed well it will be celebrated. If it isn’t, it will be laughed out of the room.
Everyone I used to play PD2 with still fondly remembers Firestarter for instance. That three map mission with the FBI data theft mission in-between and the gun stealing is iconic.
I’m quite certain there are a couple of PD2 missions I would be able to still do without much problems, and I’ve haven’t played it since 2019.
Looking at the names (Cause I don’t remember those), Art Gallery, Jewellery Store, Cook off (Which I repeat need to happen in DT), Shadow Raid, Mallcrasher, Birth of Sky were missions that I very much remember doing over and over, and I still remember how they worked since.
