What do you guys think of maybe getting a defense or escort type mission?

i’m not saying that we’re getting one, i’m just saying that i think it would be cool if we got some and that i want to know what other people think of the idea.

okay now onto the actual post.

personally, i would love to have some objectives be “defend this point from the enemy, we’ll send in a new team to take your place at some point, all you need to do is defend as long as you can!” and “escort this servitor to a this heretic stronghold, we don’t need the stronghold but they do, destroy it and kill any enemies inside. once you’ve done that, you can leave and get some rest.” or maybe even an “escort this servitor to these points where it can sabotage enemy supplies. once all the supplies are tainted with poison, you will take the servitor to their barracks detonate it. once your job is done, you can leave.”

i just really like these ideas. we should also get something like the chaos wastes but instead of going through the south of the world, we’re raiding and killing the enemies while wolfer sobs uncontrollably about how a homeless man, a mentally challenged giant, a redneck, and a schizophrenic are killing his men and stealing his toys.

It’d be fun as long as it isn’t auto fail if whatever we’re escorting is destroyed/dies.

well yeah, i mean honestly, what idiot would think “hmm, we have an escort mission, the escort target will go down at least once or twice on the higher difficulties, what should we do? oh i know, we’ll make it so that if the target dies, the mission is a bust!” i mean honestly. i personally think that it should have 3 lives. that way, if it gets hit too much, it’ll just be repaired with a corpse and a few other things!

An escort mission could work if we’re not escorting a thing that can be permanently destroyed. If it’s a machine that can be repaired if “broken” by enemy damage, or if it stops or reverses direction when nobody is near it, for example, that could work.

Defense missions would be dull as dirt. We have defense events now and they’re easily the least enjoyable gameplay DT has to offer.

I hate, utterly loathe escort quests in most video games. Just my personal opinion. But, if we were to go in that direction, the least obnoxious escort quests are usually ones where you need to escort some kind of vehicle that can be damaged and repaired, and you have to occasionally blow up some obstacles along the way so the vehicle can continue moving.

the second part is just your opinion and i agree with the first part.

To be honest, I would really like anything new.

Maybe rescue mission would be awesome, where some random operatives are stuck somewhere defending, and we are required to help them.

Operatives can be random every time, like 4 Ogryns or 2 Veterans and 2 Psychos, something cool. Alternatively they can be some new characters, like Swagger.

I just think it’ll be cool, especially if they would be acting like bots, but partially immortal.

Also, the part with Wolfer sobbing, crying and screaming😭 is great, I wish he would do it more often, it makes me feel good

PS:
Also, imagine the interactions between all of them, operatives being happy to see others, or other stuff. Maybe Ogryns will promise to share their rations☺️, probably wouldn’t happen, but it’s nice to imagine some of those happy interactions.

No escort please. Defense is good.

Thats a great idea. While I don’t like escort missions, rescue missions sound pretty cool.

Defence events haven’t been great because we haven’t really had any events where we’re actually defending anything in the way of keeping enemies away from a thing or place. There’s no manning defences, sealing breaches, any of the things associated with actually defending something. What we have that they call ‘defence’ further lacks teeth because enemies are already there or can get in with impunity. There’s never any line to hold.

Escort a tank (indestructible set dressing), opening massive doors which hold nasty surprises behind them. Hell, make it a Juggernaut if you’re feeling up to it!

The buttons / release mechanisms can be spread out, or at least require navigating a sub-section together to complete.

At the end of the mission, you get to load and fire the tank! I’m not fussed about actually aiming & shooting, just make it a audio/visual spectacular spectacular!

I could get behind that

Plus the fact when the community does create a defense area cough metal fab cough carnival the devs change it and post they don’t want us camping.

the devs should really stop changing defense spots.

I’m down with that. We hear Morrow talking about the tanks that get left behind in that elevator mission, might as well fix one up and get it to extraction. Add a nice Leman Russ to the war effort. Darktides Doretta.

I would be absolutely on board if it’s handled correctly.

Defense would be a shooting gallery where we do NOT get jumped from behind, but can predict where enemy come from.

Escort would be as others have said, NOTHING That can get stuck or die or fail it’s pathing and wander into a corner and bug the mission.

Push mission like the battering ram in War Camp is easier, and would be more suited for this game tbh.

Make it a Vehicle, either a Demolisher or a Goliath

Your post is telling me that you haven’t played many games with escort missions, have you? Escort missions with unresponsive dumb NPCs and defeat upon their death are some of the most rage inducing missions in any games. Unless it’s a sarcasm, in that case my bad.

The only reason escort mission in Deep Rock Galactic works is because it’s a mostly casual game designed to be fun first that doesn’t punish players too hard for their mistakes. Doretta (the escorted target in DRG) can soak up lots of damage, can be healed without cooldown, and has 3 lives to spare, before you fail the mission completely.

I’ve never been fond of escort missions. But I do like survival ones where you get directives like : Wipe out “X # of enemies to proceed”

Oh thank god, I thought I was speaking for the entire human race! That’s a huge pressure off, thanks!

@zaygr People who argue for defense missions always have this undertone of “I don’t want to melee, I just want to get in a bunker and shoot stuff”. That’s dull as dirt.

As for sealing breaches and the like, people just ignore that noise. Example A is The Pit in V2. The tactic is always to find the most defensible spot and camp there until the timer runs out.

Yeah, because it’s almost never actually an objective.

VT2 could have done it, fight through this set of enemies to push over this scaling ladder, or made it an objective to seal off the windows in the pit.

Defence in the 'tide games has almost never been constructed to actually defend anything in a traditional, “do not let the enemy get in” way (I think Wizard’s Tower in VT1 is one of the few defences, but enemies can still get in with impunity) and what excuses we have for defence has always, always been “Defend yourselves”. Kharak Az Garaz’s finale where you are sealing up the holes comes close, but wasn’t really mechanically nor did it feel like a defence objective, since the enemies were already inside.

It’s a design limitation based on the gameplay Darktide has, I think you can have a narratively defensive mission, but mechanically we’ll never really get a “hold the line” style defense like the AAS defence in Starship Troopers or rocket defence missions in Helldivers 2 because of that.
