what i did was used autoguns and sprayed into hordes for loads of headshot kills, after the initial barrel limb it’s pretty easy to keep on line with their heads and just move side to side to rack 'em up.

notice it doesn’t say ranged kills. Stack it up then melee or throw shredder nades for highest kill quantities

Plasma works too
The gun you do it with doesn’t matter, all you need is as many kills as possible. So do it with plasma. 
That thing will cleave like nobody’s business and get you those kills in record time.
Sure Plasma has next to no synergies with MF with its bad finesse bonuses, but so what? It’s still going to be doing insane dmg as always. And Plasma is the one weapon that doesn’t care about Camouflage (stack up MF while standing still or walking while crouched) since even on your knees you’ll just cleave through the knees of whatever is in your face to hit everything behind them. 
What’s an ideal map for racking up hordes in a choke point?
Start of the Carnival arena mission spawns endless hordes, can even use Many More Try to solo one if you don’t feel like doing these naturally
I think you’re over-analyzing tbh. Back when the penances released it didn’t take more than a handful of missions (4-5 or something idk) on T5+ literally just crouching and spamming Plasma.
It’s too long ago for me to remember exactly tbh, but I do remember the gist of it: Saw the penance → went “lol” → thought Plasma → made a build with Plasma & MF & other stuff like nades etc to grind as many penances on the same build as I could. The MF part of it was done so fast I barely noticed. There were many penances that were actually annoying to me and took a bit of time, some oggy ones I still haven’t finished. But this one was really fast.
It could also be a difficulty thing, T5+ has way more mobs than lower difficulties so it’s obviously going to be much faster there.
No, see the thing is I’m playing t5, also Havok and Auric, but everyone is too good, and hordes don’t last that long, so I was looking for the most ideal map to find a choke point, because for some reason, I can’t do more than a hundred or so per mission. Also, you need weakspot kills, so I woiuldn’t have thought of the Plasma or the grenades for that.
I coulda sworn I did this one with grenades but I could be mixing it up. Definitely did some melee for it though. Do the Many More Try thing if you can’t get to any enemies elsewhere, you’ll have to only contend with the bots
there is no shame in dropping ranks to farm penances, getting them out of the way so you aren’t bothering people by doin’ fool crap in sweaty lobbies is the more polite thing.
But you don’t need weakspot kills:
You should easily be getting at least half a thousand kills per mission, since plasma just cleaves right through hordes. You can even use secondaries if you want to make sure when there’s a lot of specialists/elites etc. Iirc the only thing a charged plasma doesn’t cleave is oggies and carapace (still does the splash tho). FYI, carapace & monsters have a special property where nothing can cleave through them, except for energized Power Swords or anti-armor blessings like Perfect Strike & Pierce etc.
Below is an example I just slapped together on Gameslantern. I don’t remember the breakpoints anymore & didn’t spend too much time on it so it’s hardly optimal (which is why there’s 2 weapon variants for reference). The point is to buff your plasma with Exec Stance & talents as much as you can so each shot will cleave & kill as many mobs for that penance as possible. You might wanna move a few talents around for +reload etc ofc but I’m sure you get the idea here: Buff that gun dmg to the max and go ham.
