The surge staff needs a rework

ok so i already made a post about this on steam but figured i would bring it here since that one got a lot of visibility there. basically my idea is simple in principle and is both a buff and nerf to the surge staff and a small nerf to the purgatus staff with the change would be to give the surge staff the soulblaze effect on full charged hits. this would come alongside a soulblaze nerf to make it hit elites slightly less hard so as to help stop soulblaze from shredding through everything and keep it in check a bit without directly nerfing its horde slaughtering potnetial.

this idea was born of the fact that the purgatus can stagger hordes just as well if not better, more consitantly, and more easily with less risk and cost and more self protection than the surge staff can do even if the surge staff can stop charging muties and fully stunn ogryn no matter what. like the purgatus can stagger even reapers if you just focus them with the staff for like half a second which removes one of the only redeeming features of the surge staff and more than that, its low dmg means that the only benefit is the stun and in my opinion, when i am offered the chance to murder a crowd of enemies in like 3 seconds flat or the ability to stun them all in place somewhat consistantly for like 10 seconds before i have to let them all move again so i can avoid my head exploding, imma go with the much easier cremate the Fers. beyond that the second change idea was something i thought of when another change idea came up to make the surge staff have a higher priority of specialists and elites to make it the specialist/elite CC machine with ok horde stop potential because of wildfire and soulblaze being nutty while the purgatus is for horde CC and safer CC at that as well as true horde melting making me think that they shouldnt necessarily be able to murder at least elites so easily with how much aoe dmg and CC the surge would have and purgatus already does.

why soulblaze for the surge staff???

This staff is incredibly useful for team work.

That is not how it works.
Elite is not a health type.
Aside from Carapace, there is no health type that is exclusive to elites, and Soulblaze already does basically nothing against carapace.
Your suggestion would also be a pointless nerf to 3 feats.

Every class has access to horde clear.
The surge staff can CC everything except bosses. There is nothing comparable, rly.
The purpose is to disable elites and specials to reduce pressure on the team, and make them easier and safer to kill.
It also deals great Carapace damage and pretty good damage against Flak armor for example.
Surge staff can 1 shot Shotgunners on Damnation.
No idea what difficulty you play on, but having a psyker with surge staff in the party, is certainly not a bad thing, when playing on damnation high int+gauntlet.
Or in any other scenario, where the group does not simply mow down all elites and specials like they are nothing. Which is quite often.

I would suggest to make the Blazing Spirit Blessing (apply soulblaze on crit) available for the staff.
This blessing already exists for Voidstrike and Trauma staff (although it is a bit of a waste on them) and would work well with the Surge staff, since it has a crit bonus stat anyway.

I would suggest this too, with maybe a lower cap on the amount of stacks, singe when the surge staff crits, it does like 20 mini crits in one attack

because it would be fun : D

well its probably not “meta” on void staff but it looks awesome : D

Surge is fine. Should probably have access to more types of blessings but that’s about it.
I really don’t understand why everyone seems to want this staff also to have massive damage while CC:ing whole screen of elites. You really cant have both.

because what benefit it does provide is situational and not needed in the least by skilled teams or even average teams that understand "dodge trapper and mutie, shoot or weaponbash dodge, dodge and hide or dodge and pop sniper, and pray to god that the crushers, mualers, and ragers dont decide you to be the unlucky bastard to get brutalized…

dude the purgatus staff can cc even reapers. like srly one blast into a horde and sustaining the fire which is way easier than with the surge mind you is enough to stunlock it easy. sure melee elites that are swinging wont get stunned cause of hyper armor but still doesnt matter much if your just good with brain poping and playing with your life like it was a pendulum and being over 100% was just tantamount to wearing your right shoe on your left foot as opposed to basically dying of a super migrane…

that idea isnt good in my eyes because darktide is a horde shooter, aka your only fighting ai and not real people and as other good horde shooters like payday 2 as the biggest example but also VT and VT2 to my understanding have shown, if one thing is underpowered compared to other stuff, the solution is hardly ever to nerf the other stuff to match its level of medeocrity but instead to crank it up to match the rest and than change the difficulty of the game in someway or offer new greater challenges LIKE payday 2’s mayhem, death wish, and death senteance modes and also one down as another good example from that same game.

more like it needs better dmg against trash mobs and better aoe cc that can spread on its own. again the purgatus can basically match the surges horde cc potential easy with what it cant do doesnt really matter if your a psyker with your brain even half activated and just make sure to pop muties and the melee ogryn.

also i dont think is a bad weapon mind you but that compared to the purgatus its so obviously worse that using it is basically crippling your team because either you like it more or genuinly dont grasp it isnt as good as the purgatus.

better than lost of posts…

This is more issue with flamethrower weapons being too good than surge sucking. Eitherway i don’t think just midlessly buffing weapon that can 1 tap cc basically everything. Horde enemies are mostly memes anyways.

how? is reply not the way to do it right?

EXACTLY. i agree so lets make everything as good as them in their own way so they are still differnt but can compete and than worry about upping the game difficulty to match later.

there is a reason fatshark knew to buff psyker and will likely buff zelot and ogryn in response to vet having been to strong compared to everyone else and i bet ya once they are done, we’ll see a bonafied mayhem difficulty get added (aka a 6th teir difficulty or maybe even higher)

And this is what we call powercreep The game is already stupidly easy as it is so last thing i want is weapons doing horde clear, elite clear, boss damage and stupidly good cc.

Yeah and with fatsharks pace we are going to be here for couple years before that happens. One can be optimistic but we only need to look at v2 and how long it took there.

fair but thats also just it, horde shooters can be easy as crap but as long as its fun as well which i would say darktide is, it doesnt matter too much and hell. if you think there needs to be a harder difficulty mode than just voice that opinion in the forums like i have and if enough people at least at fatshark agree with ya, you can make change happen rather than complain on someone elses forum post that their idea wouldnt fit with the game now as it is. hell maybe i will make that post to say that before any more BIG class updates, the game should get a difficulty mode bump.
