So Relic sword is overperforming in your opinion? What is your milestone that most weapons should reach for in this case?
It seems to me (and I could be wrong) like people here expect Darktide to be “VT3,” when in reality, it’s a Warhammer 40K game first and a “tide” game second. It was never meant to be a “high skill”, 90% melee focused experience with a steep learning curve like Chivalry or Mordhau. No one enjoys hearing “trust me, bro, it gets better at level 300,” even in MMOs where that kind of grind is the norm.
Fatshark drove away the casual 40k crowd with an abysmal launch, crafting hell, jumbled story, glacial update pace, and horrendous cosmetic store. Now the hardcore nerds are getting bored because they refuse to decide if the game will be balanced around Auric or Havoc. Old Fatshark nerfed Ogryn’s bromentum shovel and New Fatshark gave him bleed on light Confident Strike Bully 3 with Rumbler and your choice of ult: chorus but better or glugger aoe hell.
Well in the eyes of the average player, a weapon as good as tac axe isn’t viable so we loop back around to it being a bad balance patch in the eyes of everyone. Average player plays one build and hardcore nerds hate playing with that one build.
Hell, the aoe ain’t even balanced around Havoc. Civi seed with purg psyker is a free win. Actually we can add DS4 back to the Havoc conversation as something like the twin spawn is supposed to be a massive difficulty spike and that stupid sword can solo Rinda in 30 seconds.
I agree with your points but, In my opinion, it can still win the casual audience back, and that’s what FS is probably trying. We are not post mortem 1k playerbase full of skillnerds phase (yet). It still is somewhat acessible, it still is “40K L4D” with no real alternative, they just need to stop jumping the shark.
I think its a hair overtuned and i said so on launch day. But i really like the weapon and there are at least costs and downtime associated with its power curve and most of the things that make it actually nutty are talent tree problems. Its the best designed power weapon in the game and I wouldn’t look at a nerf for it for now.
That depends heavily on each weapons position within the 40k lore and its relative balance to other weapons. It also depends on if it deprived other players or fun, challenge, or agency. (Smite is horrible for the latter two). I use a reproducable testing system that I’ve described at length in other places to determine weapon TTKs and try to knock down the nails that stand out and fill the holes that are too deep without eliminating flavorful differentiation.
This is non-sensical. Its a 40k tide game, its a tide game in 40k. Like i understand what you’re trying to say but the game has always been exactly a both of these.
This seems, on its face, obviously wrong. The devs have repeatedly stated that they understand that part of their core audience really enjoys a challenge. They gave us Auric. Then they gave us Havoc. The devs have even streamed themselves on twitch playing mid level havoc games, and yes mid level havoc isn’t that hard to some of us for sure, but a bulk of the playerbase (from what i can tell) can barely clear heresy games and i, personally, consider mid-havoc a reasonable accomplishment despite the fact that i can clear H40 games with bottom jar gear.
90% melee? No. I think the ranged part of the hybrid gameplay in DT is currently underperforming its ideal form. BUT i also don’t know why you’d think the dev vision does not involve melee complexity with a learning curve. Havoc was added and around the exact same time we got the force great sword and relic blades. Even the “simple” patterns of both of these weapons have relatively complex cycle combos and handling characteristics that can be learned in depth and each has a more complex version. Sure, theres simpler weapons in the game too. Rashad combat axe anyone? And that is good! Different strokes for different folks.
Darktide starts fun in hour 1 and stays fun by having endless interesting challenges. Players who don’t want the 300 hour skill curve should probably stop in auric. This is precisely why DT has 2K+ hour retention capacity. Im still not bored.

I mean, I know this game is hard, don’t get me wrong. What I meant is that people advocating for nerfs in an already hard game are essentially making it even harder and more inaccessible. (This isn’t necessarily an absolute truth, just a general impression I have to assume from reading discussions here.) It seems like people want it to be too much like VT3, or rather GTFO (which is a weirdly similar game, but where melee is lethal and hordes are a death sentence), instead of letting FS do its thing which so far seems to be pushing for more diversity.
Note: I’m not defending buffing everything to DS4 levels, nor am I arguing that DS4 and other overperforming weapons should remain untouched.
>90%
I was exaggerating a bit, but that’s the impression these discussions give me, that people want a 40K game to be either melee-focused or melee-focused with lethal melee, which is completely different from what this game has been for the past two years.
I personally like the combat axe. If FS removed DS and all the top-tier melee weapons today, people here would probably call for nerfs on the combat axe since it can stagger ragers on specials and consistently kill crushers with a few heavy attacks all while having better horde clear than the current DS4.
I definetly have more fun now than I did back when I had wee characters bellow lv30 with green gear, and I know plenty of people with way less patience/dedication/fanatism to even try to surpass that initial “entry barrier”, and I wouldn’t want to make it harder/more tedious. (Which FS seems to be addressing with the upcoming update but we will have to see)
Uhuh, i already see complaints coming about them being also"too strong" and that they should be nerfed too, in a PVE game.
You and people like you would see this game reduced to a point, where any weapon would need one billion strikes, to kill one crusher, because all i see on this forum is desire, to remove any even remotely good weapon, blessing or talent.
And i guess idea, no, not idea, a fact, that there’s always will be some meta, something that most people will use, beucase it is good, better than everything else, is completely unfathomable to you and others like you.
God damn your posts are just one argument fallacy after another. Nobody here thinks they’re going to remove any kind of meta. We just don’t want things that are egregiously overpowered, of which there are currently a few, quite evidently to anybody who actually plays the game.
Are you being intentionally obtuse here or do you actually not understand the difference?
Oh bcs need crutch to play game you gona say it dont need balance?
What kind of tunnel vision is that?
Honestly after reading your posts I hope devs nerf DS.
And not only bcs of you but like most of my pubs have DS and its boring to see it over and over and over again.
