1750 hours in Darktide, what mods are just simply essential?
Except for a True level of course, because the game wouldn’t be it if i couldn’t silenty and privately look down in utter contempt on all the peasantry and other associated plebeans.
Sometimes i’m even shocked by the quiet contempt and low regard i have for my teammates, but it is not said that only the truly great ones can carry the burden of obvious far reaching superiority? Let alone with such selfless modesty and shocking humbleness like i do?
It is also completely different from all the misguided scoreboard l337zors, who look at it thru the suffocating prism of merit and skill and allow such meaningless variables to cloud their eyes to the truth of superiority derived from the True level!!!
I know you’ve been campaigning hard but there are only a handful of hardliners on each side I reckon. I think most people want a solution that keeps innocuous mods but prevents cheats.
Even the queue preference is a stopgap to mod management, in reality it may be more placebo than cure. If mods aren’t to be banned then they should at least be individually bannable, which unfortunately requires FS to step in.
IMO a good first step is creating a mod report mechanism (forum topic, webform) where questionable mods can be discussed. It’s easy to say that “the community has failed to police” while in a non-specific rant topic full of grumblers. All it would take is to begin taking responsibility by having a dedicated thread and a poll. Is this mod a cheat and do we want it gone?
Being against sanction or mod removal is not “have cake and eat it too” it’s “once burned twice shy”.
Most people won’t do 3rd party posts or even 1st party in the case of these forums. And on top of that, most people are apathetic so they won’t report stuff just silently grumble to themselves and move on until the next time it and may never chime in even if it’s in their best interest to do so.
Again, I still think FS taking a stand and making and official statement would cut down on the majority of existing and possibly future mods to. Cheaty mod authors masquerading as “good gamer citizens” would be immediately on the outs and those hiding behind their “appeal to authority”, currently none, would have that cover yanked away.
I still think, perhaps naively, that had FS been more verbally explicit about it from the start, it would have drastically reduced the bad mods and reduce their distribution by 90%+.
They still can chime in, it’s not too late to do some good.
Good repeated point, I forgot to mention it again for the umpteenth time. Those “streamers” can suck BoN slug slime.
I still don’t understand how you’re trying to stream and show how good you are at the came, then showcase so many mods that strip away difficulty and danger.
To add insult to injury (repeating it)) they chime on on balance.
To add even more insult to injury, they brag about their achievements and “world firsts”", is there a cringe level past Omega? Does it wrap around back to Alpha?
Thing is, mostly the mods aren’t strictly violating ToS. So no reason for FS to step in. And like as not they are the arbiter of what is broadly acceptable and not.
So I will double down and say if someone (not just you) feels a mod goes too far the best thing to do currently is make a stink about that mod specifically and rally the community to raise awareness to the mod author and FS. This can be improved, for sure, especially in light of all the tangentially related balancing issues.
Let’s also remember that mod authors just want to make cool stuff and are people too. Chances are they’re happy to take feedback on board without overly chumming the waters. It’s happened before, and mostly all it takes is being reasonable and asking nicely (if insistently). Feels strange to say but there are multiple instances already where this approach has worked. Go figure.
All evidence doesn’t point to the contrary if there is evidence to the contrary contrary?? It’s not a “take” it’s an observation. And please don’t ask me to dig up the details, I’m in no position to do so right now. Sorry.
Yes this is their stance, openly and for better or worse. Just pointing that out. If a mod violates ToS, as you say, just make a post pointing that out and bring it to the author’s attention. Just because FS won’t proactively follow up doesn’t mean nothing will happen. Though you may not agree.
It’s easy to say nothing will happen but I’ve rarely seen such an effort so I will maintain my optimism in this regard.
Hell yeah. Gpk was right all along, tolerating a few questionable mods lead to wallhacks and automation of play (mostly made by psyker mains, whoever would have thought lmao)
My dude, the bad mod authors know exactly what they’re doing, if they don’t then yikes. It’s foolishly naive even by my Polyanna standards to think otherwise, I’m really not sure what evidence to the contrary but just go look at the comments for the top ESP mods (hint, sort by downloads) and look at some even removing the ability for tagging those mods on Nexus as cheat or unbalanced.
They’d only have to make one change really to make the old sanction system infinitely better than the current wild west of modding we have:
Once a mod is whitelisted any updates to said mod are auto whitelisted. This removes the issue of waiting for resanction every game update. If a modder tries to abuse this by adding cheaty aspects after being white listed the community reports them and the modder is indefinitely blacklisted.
Maybe I’m misunderstanding something and there’s a good reason it couldn’t work this way, but seems like the best compromise to me.
I don’t understand this thought process. Sure it can be bypassed but it would complicate the process enough to deter probably bare minimum 75% of the people using these mods and that still seems like a huge win?
It’d be a substantial improvement to make it slightly less terrible but I seriously don’t trust Fatshark to do a mod sanction system that would still give us the same modding freedoms we have now. The same Fatshark that effectively stopped approving new mods after less than 1 year and now refuses to sanction even the most inoffensive mods. They won’t even let you play a private quickplay mission.
I don’t think improving one part of the sanction system is enough to make it better than what we have now, not at all. I don’t want Fatshark to have the final say for every single mod of whether or not you can use it. There is no modded realm, there is no alternative to go to for people who want to play with would-be-disallowed mods.
Would Fatshark allow people to use client cosmetic mods? Data tracking mods? Communications mods? HUD customization? UI customization? Bugfix mods? Crashfix mods? MMT? Solo play? Creature spawner? Difficulty mods? Accessibility mods? Plugins for already existing mods? Community translations? Customizable audio mods? Memes?
There are hundreds of mods that aren’t in violation of their guidelines and I fear we’ll end up being able to use only a fraction if Fatshark has to approve mods again.
Furthermore, “cheaty aspects” is vague and not automatically in violation of their guidelines. We could call Numeric UI a cheat but most of us don’t even though it provides gameplay relevant information you can’t normally obtain.
I was going to guess Numeric UI but turns out it’s actually Scoreboard lmao. Not including DML & DMF.
“Sub optimal” to what, exactly? If a player’s build is extra-efficient at removing the highest threats to mission success - which are specialists and disablers - they are not “sub-optimal” already. If at the same time it also removes tons of elites (the second most highest threat) - well, that’s an absolute top meta build then. “Survivability” is only of concern if you drop down like 10+ times during a mission. But if you do so, and STILL are able to score those insanely high numbers on specials/elites kills.. Well, that rises a question of what the other 3 players were doing then, if you were able to beat them so hard, while spending so much time in downed/captured state.
I’m not going to say there’s no grey area here, but I think you’re painting the line as vastly, vastly more blurry than we both know it is in practice. At this point I trust Fatshark’s definition of a cheaty mod more than I trust the community’s self regulation frankly.
In response to the rest of your post, I’m going to quote what I said in the other recent mod post:
Basically I would have once agreed what we have is better than Fatshark oversight, but that belief has been eroded away almost entirely by the community’s continued abysmal self regulation.
I’d love a modded realm too obviously, that would help considerably, but I need you to understand the extent to which the well has already been poisoned for me to prefer Fatshark oversight in any situation.
I’d rather not have Darktide become a strictly worse video game just over a knee-jerk reaction to a handful of people downloading a colour-coded wallhack.
What does this even mean? “The community” cannot self regulate because the only people who can take down a mod from Nexusmods is the modder themselves, the people at Nexus, or Fatshark. Your supposed idea of self-regulation never existed in the first place because there is no “community” that decides what mods are uploaded to Nexus. Anyone can put anything. If someone made an aimbot mod then there is nothing you or me could do to get it removed except post about it and maybe a Fatshark employee would see it 3 weeks from now or something.
This entire situation is the fault of Fatshark. They knew that eventually a cheat mod would be easily accessible because it happens to every game in existence. They just don’t care enough to check what mods get uploaded. All it would take is spending 3 minutes a day on Nexusmods with Darktide mods sorted by new and we wouldn’t be here talking about it.
There’s a post about it from 5 days ago and no word from Fatshark about it. Whether that’s because they don’t want to make a statement, don’t care about it, or nobody has even read it yet is up to interpretation.
“NO- you have to have World Olympic Games standards for fairness; drug tests, urine analysis, gear checks. Let’s REALLY make this race fair for everyone and kick out these IDIOTS who don’t agree out because they’re too stupid to understand how important this i-”
