You rack the bolt EVERY time you pull out those guns. This is not how guns work, even in W40k. Could we not use clunkiness as means of “balance” so much?
Yeah pull out time for both helbore and boltgun is horrendous, hopefully they get rid of it as an added qol feature
The delay is there for balance against guns that are “weaker”
The animation is there so that it’s not just a slow take out
But… Bolter racking is gone? (unless you did only partial reload OR…).
It’s the lasguns that have this problem now (I always explained that to myself as putting it off from safety - you know, that little button you press on the side).
“OR…” what now is a Vet talent (Tactical Reload) should be a feature for all characters:
Bolter and all autoguns [all non-fuel or non-energy ranged weapons] should, when reloaded and if the previous magazine still had munitions in it, have +1 ammo (“one in the chamber” - f.e. bolter should house 16 out of 15 bolts). Unless you want to keep tactical reload as vet talent only, then all other characters still rack the gun and have always the same amount of munitions when ready to fire (you do have to add an unspent round/bolt flying away after racking if that’s the case).
Quick Edit: Belt fed weapons are excluded (for obvious reasons) from tac-reload - sorry Biggun.
Also, have I mentioned how absolutely livid MAGAZINES to autoguns make me?
Why do they have different sizes for Emperors sake?! Why “Ammunition Bar” couldn’t correspond to amount of munitions you have?! (Which is still dumb, because different weapon of the same model should not warrant the amount of ammunition you can carry, but I can live with it).
As the Helbore is a pure fantasy energy weapon you could think of various reasons why this “racking” is neccessary. The most plausible would be: As the Helbore works at higher energy levels maybe you have to disconnect the energy coupling for safety reasons when you store the weapon and reconnect by racking before you fire.
As the Lucius Lasguns No. 98 are influenced by WWI Boltaction rifles - namely the Gewehr 98 - you can look at the safeties those rifles fielded. Flicking from safe to secure and vice versa is a by modern standards tedious process quite comparable to the racking animation of the Lucius.
And concerning the Bolter - that was answered by @Lt.DavinFelth. But yes the earlier racking everytime felt stupid on an automatic gun and it’s good it is gone.
Good to know, I assumed its still there, I just undusted my veteran and played few rounds with Hellbores.
Considering how powerful the bolter is and how absolutely huge a bolter is even in Warhammer 40 k lore I don’t see much wrong. Also to all of you who haven’t used an absolutely awesome above 500 points bolter you should try it and make sure your damage is over 75% this will make you smile for the emperor.
Personally, I think the racking should only happen when you reload from an empty mag. It would make sense in that situation as that’s how real guns work.
The question I find myself asking is why would you need to rack an energy-based weapon?
So I always saw it as a safety switch or “on” switch. Which once again I find myself asking, why would you have it switched off in an active combat zone?
I find the idea of intentionally hobbling certain range weapons to be silly given that equally powerful weapons like plasma gun and psyker staves are not nerfed in this way.
At most they should be actions you only need to perform on reloading an empty gun, as in real life. At least that way the delay before firing makes sense, you didn’t rack the bolt before putting the gun away. Hence good practice is to keep on top of your weapon’s ready status as a part of normal gameplay.
