PVP game mode

Mortis trials is practically a test room for “chaos wastes” (roguelite mode), and a thrown bone.
Judging how quick PvP died in VT2 and the time it took to actually release it…..thanks, but no thanks.

Was it a success?

I’m still hoping for a 1v4 PvPs and getting to play as the dungeon master.

While I did claim PvP would be bad in Darktide in my previous comment, I kinda hate seeing people say “VT2 didn’t work because the mode was Bad”

VT2 versus died because Fatshark didn’t listen to feedback, period

During the beta we mentioned about Cata players playing together stomping on soloqueuere, and how it was gonna be an issue. Fatshark completey ignored this

We also mentioned how classes needed a lot more changes in this mode (Mainly outcast engineer breaking the entire mode) to make sure they don’t bully the rats. They didn’t listen to this at all

Fatshark just released the mode with NO matchmaking and extremely poor class balance (if you didn’t play meta classes while the enemy did, you already were at a huge disadvantage)

Had Fatshark take this feedback seriously and actually do something about it, Versus wouldn’t be dead in VT2

But that’s the thing with VT2 and versus, it failed from things Fatshark could’ve easily solved

Darktide on the other hand… Has huge fundamental issues that would not allow for a good Asymmetrical PVP gamemode

  • Movetech (Knife mainly)
  • Stealth (combined with Movetech)
  • Sprinting (enemies are supposed to be faster than you, You know?)
  • Cooldowns being EXTREMELY low in this Game (this one can be easily solved tho)
  • Ogryn being useless (since big CC is not as useful in an environment where npcs are not the big threat)
  • Arbites having a dog that essentially works as an unkillable companion that can bully players on the Chaos team
  • Scum Toxins in general

Idk, I’m just coping since Fatshark failed an extremely promising mode in VT2, but the main point is that if they failed to deliver PVP in a game where it was actually possible to succeed had they listened to their beta testers, they’re not going to be able to deliver PVP in a game with fundamental designs that are incompatible with PVP

VT2 Vs mode PTSD intensifies.

To be fair VT2 versus was made by like 3 devs over the course of a couple years I think and came out way after the games peak. Their current active flagship game might get a bit more dev & QA power on the case.

That’s just me playing devils advocate though. I guess in reality Fatshark can’t even balance a crusher against a toothpick so there’s no way they could figure out pvp balance nowadays.

very much this. the game still lacks solo mode 3 years later, got 1 map (not a campaign) in 1 year, balance is all over the place… so tbh i don’t see how fatshark could split the same resources to add a pvp mode, which would probably require anticheat, not work with mods, and probably attract much less players than if they dedicate to a campaign with new missions, enemies etc, something often requested.

anyway i praise Fatshark for investing time to add new things into the game im not so keen on PVP myself but if it was part of a training simulation dont see why it would hurt, but i welcome it being a possibility and if it makes them group of people happy add a score board and let them have their day why not it wont affect the main game mode…..

VT2 PVP could have been a big success. On the one hand it was impressive that Fatshark pulled it off at all and it had a lot of interest at launch, with lots of players for the first few months. The concept is great (and has already been proven by the Left 4 Dead franchise).

Sadly, this is Fatshark so there were a lot of bugs at launch including some critical ones. The biggest issue was that matchmaking was awful, so most games ended up horribly unbalanced which isn’t fun for either team.

Fatshark, of course, fixed a bunch of the minor bigs that no one really cared about, ignored the big ones, and went on vacation for a couple months. VS mode pretty much died then and Fatshark still hasn’t addressed the matchmaking problems.

It’s fun if you have seven other friends to do a 4v4 with, but queueing solo is a terrible experience.

As someone who dabbled in PvP Matchmaking in Halo 3 and basically nothing else outside of a couple MOBAs and a game called Archeblade, this reads as a foreign language to me.

In response to the OP though, they’ll add PvP after they promise to add it and then wait over 3 years with it as “not a priority” and radio silence

Who would have thought that PvP modeled after a game that had no talents or loadouts would fail when the dev team didn’t balance their talents and loadouts.

L4D/L4D2 PvP worked because everyone was at a level playing field with their personal skill and their teammates being the only deciding factor. Plus, given that it was a “just for fun” gamemode meant that most players didn’t mind losing as it was just stupid fun.

and I envy you for that, a lot more relaxing that way believe me :joy:

k/d is kill death ratio, basically anyone who gets killed more often than killing the enemy is a negative k/d and by default “no human” :face_with_tongue: (read this in a light hearted tone)

by the time you reach a k/d of 2+ in some games you’ve earned a right to exist and “maybe” have a name

anyone in double or triple digit numbers, avert your worthless eyes varlets, a true god roams your presence, bow or be doomed :smiling_face_with_horns:

now, having done the whole shebang for 30+years, at one point it aint worth it chasing an ever increa k/d and stress becomes the main thing in a game which should at least be a good time.

hence I’m not a big fan of any hero shooter type and asynchronous pvp based on character traits rather than the players pure mechanical skills.

and darktide wouldn’t work without perks/ults/talents etc

you hit the nail on the head right there anything thats makes the game even more fun aint at all bad :love_you_gesture: but just to clarify something PVP is much harder than PVe because player vs enviroment is very predicable. PVP player vs player is unpredictable because real people are not as predictable has a bot they actually think instead of follow programming……. for example noone brags about running COD in bot mode???

Did you cherry pick two words out of my post that seemingly supported you and roll with that?

PvP doesn’t work in Tide games because Tide games have Talent trees and item loadouts creating an uneven playing field. Being forced to min-max and play specific classes just to not get stomped isn’t fun. Left 4 Dead/Left 4 Dead 2’s PvP was “stupid fun” because everyone had the same stats with the same starting loadout and the same weapons. Coach couldn’t go invisible. Francis couldn’t stim up and dodge every attack in a 5-mile radius. Zoey couldn’t pull out a minigun and automatically generate infinite bombs.

This is what Index meant when he said:

Did the dude with a limp even be slower ? Or was it just cosmetic.

the reason “real” pvp games (of the 1on1 arena kind) got that small of an audience is the same with every professional activity:

everyone wants to be the dog but no one takes the time being the bush.

being or even getting “up there” takes tremendous skill, dedication, time etc.

something the instant gratification crowd lost 2 decades ago.

no one bears losing years on end 0:50something when playing against the few at the top and the gap is huuuuge.

hero shooters and modern stuff flatten this curve to almost a straight line when character traits can make up for a lack of aim, reflexes, reaction time and such and of course the casual majority flocks to that candy handout in droves.

can’t emulate that in darktide, it’s a pve shudder overwatch with 40k skin in its core :man_shrugging:

take out the rock/paper/scissors and you got nothing left

In other case I would just shrug and said “whatever”. I mean, I would never step my foot into PvP, I started to play DT specifically because it is NOT a PvP but coop game, so adding PvP in here as well doesn’t make any sense to me, but if other people has nothing else to do, I don’t care.

But it’s FS we are talking about, who release like 2 really notable content updates a year, so their resources are already shallow. If they spend time on developing PvP mode that means less content that majority players (I believe) expects from a coop pve game (new maps, weapons, story chapters, classes, foes etc).

So I hope they don’t do such a thing ever. Just go play dozens of other pvp-oriented games. As if there was a lack of those.

No thanks, but a solo game mode… this I take

Fatshark don’t loose time on PVP… fulfill your promise and give us Solo game mode.

This is flat out wrong

Their unwillingness to change problematic talents in versus does not translate into PvP not working

This comes from experience, the moment we started doing private lobbies with extremely good players and a few classes banned (Engi, Warrior Priest and Footknight) alongside a few weapons banned (Blunderbuss, Trollhammer), the experience became insanely good

It’s not a matter of “It doesn’t work because it’s a tide Game”, it didn’t work because Fatshark is scared of making changes for versus alone

Engi, Footknight and WP could easily have talent tweaks to accomodate them, some weapons could be banned on the gamemode with no complaints from the playerbase

Anything could work, in theory, but the amount of work that would be needed can make some things impossible.

So, it’s not “flat out wrong” it’s “true, but Fatshark could fix it.”
