also vermintide 1 and vermintide 2 is a co-op online game but you can host a game and play by yourself with bots, same for left 4 dead and left 4 dead 2 or deep rock galactic
All of those except maybe DRG, and I very much doubt that one but it’s not impossible, are built using P2P hosting and whatnot.
There’s a number of technical reasons that make “real” solo mode difficult; it’s not impossible, but there’s a bunch of hurdles from fundamental design decisions made when the game was just starting development (mostly stuff tied to the decision to go all-in on dedicated servers). There’s a bunch of stuff under the hood that would have to get done to achieve it.
And given the fact that the game is, in fact, an online co-op horde shooter, and bills itself as such, there’s not really a lot of incentive for FS to spend all that time and energy on overcoming those hurdles for the like 12 people who genuinely care about playing solo enough that it’s a financial incentive, rather than trying to deliver content and updates at their already glacially slow pace to the thousands of people who don’t give the least bit of care about solo anything.
yet they seem oddly dedicated turning the mandatory rejects into annoying locusts you need to deal with first before you can get a hold of any “gameplay”
at release the game was designed around 4 people chomping at the enemy, fondly remember the first damnation runs fresh out of beta.
nowadays its "crap another cheapskate xxx trying to hog the feed, guess i skip 2 rooms ahead if i want something to do
"
only real thing that’d need an auto or off-feature is auspex, everything else (snot tentacles included) are doable in solo mod already playing, not stealthing or skipping ahead, so…
why they are so stubborn not giving what space marine 2 has for quite a while now is beyond me.
got my eyes on fire team elite 2 as well, never played the first one but only if i can turn it into avp4 or colonial marines 2 and single every thing there is.
the moment the dev forces people into my session, im out
Read.
They promised it, and they had even given a release window…
Of course, in December 2022, most important thing was crafting. This is why the community has not pushed for solo game mode at this time.
there’s not really a lot of incentive for FS to spend all that time and energy on overcoming those hurdles for the like 12 people who genuinely care about playing solo enough that it’s a financial incentive
Man, who knew that ‘like 12’ is equal to ‘over 14,644’. The more you know
Solo Play doesn’t even offer progression and has almost 15k unique downloads,
there’s not really a lot of incentive for FS to spend all that time and energy on overcoming those hurdles
ah yes, very difficult and very time and energy consuming editing one line of text so that you can start by yourself instead requiring randomly one more player, just to start a private session.
that by the way, you can start a private mission with your friend, and then your friend can leave and you obtain actually a scuffed “solo mode”. So ask yourself why fatshark just doesn’t simply want to do this officially, it’s not because of technical reasons, it is because they are greedy since they don’t want many people host multiple sessions by themselves alone
why talking about topics that you have no clue about? do you know you can even start a public online session with players with absolutely no bots? it is a gatekept mod that i have and it’s possible as thing as it is possible to have a solo mode in darktide, it’s not an impossible task nor a complex one.
are built using P2P hosting and whatnot.
what it has to do the p2p hosting, l4d2 has both dedicated servers and p2p, can still play solo.
vt2 started using dedicated servers in quickplay for Versus also. and vt2 is also p2p so
All of those except maybe DRG
? you can play solo there
And given the fact that the game is, in fact, an online co-op horde shooter, and bills itself as such,
DRG, Space Marines 2, DRG: Rogue Core, Aliens: Fireteam Elite, Far Far West, Vermintide 2, Helldivers 1 and 2, and many others are also online horde shooters.
All of those games allow me to play solo, and several of them feature competent AI companions.

in vt2 bots were even more advanced cuz they could use ults xd in dt nothing
oh right, and they could also keep items, tomes and grims too
Vermintide 2
and vermintide 1 too ![]()
got my eyes on fire team elite 2 as well, never played the first one but only if i can turn it into avp4 or colonial marines 2 and single every thing there is.
AFE is where I came to Darktide from (and why I actually enjoy Blight Spreads). I would still easily recommend AFE 1 if you have any love for Aliens. This game nails the feeling of being a colonial marine and has plenty to offer enjoyers of extended universe stuff like novels and such.
Here’s IGN’s first look, FYI:
That makes me hopeful since early rumors were they were shifting to some sort of hero system instead of the classes with perk grids. Only “worry” is the grid may only be available on that bonus specialist class, but it kind of solves the issue if it is actually completely build-your-own like this says.
The only other detriment to AFE and possibly 2, the only real reason I’m not still playing it, is the spawns are/were very scripted. This is because AFE actually tells an engaging Aliens story in its levels and has a regimented story mode with linear flow (like DT now has, but actually telling a story). They briefly touch on it by saying devs added “better AI” to the mobs, but that’s not detailed enough to make me think it brings the type of variety in engagements that DT has. We’ll see.
Either way, my body is ready. Will probably need to wait a bit past initial release just like with AFE (and every other game now, i guess) as Cold Iron polishes up well after launch. But it’s looking like I won’t have to wait too long to get my fix again.
Oh, and, topic relevance: Solo is possible, even if you need to be a god to pull it off at the highest levels.
kitz in another thread made the point that if all else fails, stop killing games will come through by functionally making fatshark provide a solo mode for the game after they sunset it. interestingly it will also allow people to run their private modded servers and finally allow co-op modded difficulties and community balance patches. basically it will improve the game in every way imaginable by freeing it from the live service + DRM clutches.
consider supporting skg any way you can, it’s also just generally a good thing for the games industry.
I played the living
out of Alien: Fireteam Elite.
Love that game to death.
The one thing that unfortunately worked against it is that spawns is scripted instead of being spawned by a director like in many other horde shooters and Horde Mode (Survival) is a bit meh.
HOWEVER!
The spawn issue was partly fixed later when they introduced challenge cards which you collect and can activate before matches - they usually give you one good thing and one bad thing and will spice up spawns on the map or like some card will screw up your visison, make your weapons fail and such.
The expacs was great as well and really built upon the foundation of the base game.
If you like the Alien franchise then it’s a must buy IMO.
It’s not a expensive game like Darktide so it has a bit more jank, but it perfectly captures the feeling of being Marines sent in to get them Xeno bastards and the campaign story is really good actually.
I’m going to buy AFTE2 on day one, just hope that they have some kind of director this time.
I’ve been trying to follow news and such and it sounds like they have something akin to a director, but I can’t
confirm or deny.
Rogue Core (it’s awesome) is holding me over until AFTE2 releases.
Darktide fell off.
Oh, and, topic relevance: Solo is possible, even if you need to be a god to pull it off at the highest levels.
Yeah.. I play it from time to time…
But must say that Arc Raiders has populated my gaming sessions…
And Arc Raiders can also be played solo, in squad or even you can choose solo vs squads (with a +20% exp bonus).
And I really love their matchmaking process. More you pvp, more you will encounter players that want PVP.
I prefer PVE and get help from others raiders to destroy bigger Arc enemies.
Man, who knew that ‘like 12’ is equal to ‘over 14,644’. The more you know
Most ppl I know use this mod to test things in the Psycharium, not to play by themselves. But that’s just my experience.

You confuse with creature spawner..
Solo mod is for launching missions on maps.
I’m sorry, I indeed mistunderstood, I meant the Solo Play mod.
You are correct.
kitz in another thread made the point that if all else fails, stop killing games will come through by functionally making fatshark provide a solo mode for the game after they sunset it.
Europe will enforce that… maybe…
But I guess Europe has enough problems to handle actually with the Orange Agent, and so this is not an actual priority.
We have also in boxes the project to stop the daylight saving time… and the project is here since 2019 and was halter by COVID19
A fellow AFE enjoyer, eh? Maybe I’ll see you on LV-895 in the near future.
ah yes, very difficult and very time and energy consuming editing one line of text so that you can start by yourself instead requiring randomly one more player, just to start a private session.
So to be clear, the entire reason that limitation exists is because of the stuff I’m talking about.
Fatshark built the dedicated servers and designed the game around them in, put bluntly, poor ways. A direct result of this is the issues around mission select, server performance, and so on. I don’t want to get too technical, but the TLDR is that any given combination of mission + modifiers + difficulty needs its own dedicated server node that can only run that specific combination, and each one can only hold a certain number of instances/actively running missions at any given time. This means that the more people trying to run different copies of the same mission (which is what a private, and especially solo, game is), the more servers they’d need to dedicate to that one mission at that difficulty.
The reason private games are limited to at least 2 players is to limit that impact and keep the servers functional without inflating costs and spinning up more servers.
Is this a solvable issue? Yes. Is it time and resource intensive to solve? Also yes. Will it see meaningful returns on that investment? Fatshark appears to have determined the answer is no.
what it has to do the p2p hosting, l4d2 has both dedicated servers and p2p, can still play solo.
vt2 started using dedicated servers in quickplay for Versus also. and vt2 is also p2p so
P2P hosting is important because that’s how you get solo mode. The way a “real” solo mode would work is you self-host a P2P instance, essentially running the “server” on your own computer, and run the mission that way.
The SoloPlay mod sidesteps this by leveraging the stubbed out and completely nonfunctional “server” that the devs added to the game for the Psykhanium, but that’s also why mission completions et al don’t give any XP or drops and the like. The actual server to server communications for that don’t exist in the game’s code, and so a proper, fully supported solo mode would require Fatshark to essentially build out at least most of a P2P hosting system.
Again, not an insurmountable challenge, but it’s non-trivial.
Man, who knew that ‘like 12’ is equal to ‘over 14,644’. The more you know
I’m like 8 of those downloads at this point man
SoloPlay’s a great mod. It just also completely goes around all the aforementioned technical issues, which is why it doesn’t give any account progress or unlocks or whatever.
There’s clearly people who want to play solo, or they’d have to shut up about it now. The question is less that and more “are there enough that want it and that would then because of it spend enough money on the game to justify the time and effort to get around the technical hurdles?” with a side order of “does officially supported solo mode matter when the mod exists and covers the ‘important’ parts?”.
To all appearances, Fatshark has determined the answer to both of those questions is no, and thus where we are now.
To be clear, I’m not making any value judgments here. I don’t really have strong feelings about solo mode either way; I probably wouldn’t play it, but I’m not at all against having it as an option. I’m just trying to point to the practical realities of what is, and how that is standing in the way of actually delivering on a solo mode for the game.
If you like the Alien franchise
i do, but yet another game would be the end of my sanity and storage space.
not to mention neca to be one of the few companies that have their xeno figures look the part, but as with neca you so much as sneeze at em and joints break ![]()
why mention this?
started darktide boom 30 odd mcfarlane figures
started space marine 2 boom how many tyranids do you need? YEEES!
fired conan exiles back up after the enhanced revamp…boom snake men and conan figure popping outta da walls…
and fish men pre ordered…
cant help myself ![]()
alien would lead to predator and from there…squatting in an abandoned industrial site i guess for all the space dioramas need
ever tried building a 1/6 jungle??? a bit of green wont do nu-uh
