for the love of god, why the hell is it taking this damn long?! it was promised to be in game on release, it wasn’t, it was said to have been in progress, we have yet to see any real proof or anything like that to confirm, it was then said to be not a priority at the moment, that is fair, but it should still be worked on by at least a small team of people.
now, its just forgotten all together. how close is it to being done? is it even planned anymore? WHERE IS OUR UPDATE ON SOLO MODE?!
it is not planned. they said so ages ago. i’m pretty sure this isn’t the first time you’ve posted this and someone linked to them saying it wasn’t in development anymore last time.
That’s not acceptable at all though. It was a major feature that was promised both before and after release. For some it’ll be what makes the game playable at all.
@FatsharkStrawHat we really are thoroughly owed an update on this. Surely enough major patches have happened that solo is no longer in the “not a priority” basket.
They first told us “it’s almost ready and will be available at launch or in a patch shortly thereafter in December.” on November 18th, 2022. That’s almost 2 years ago if you weren’t checking.
The next update was 3-4 months after launch “we’ve hit a snag, and it’s not quite in a state we’re happy with but it’ll be coming as soon as we’re happy with it!”
Then nothing ofor almost 6 months until we only get “it’s not a priority.” with no explanation as to what happened after “we’re not happy but we’re working on it!”
So, given that it’s been almost 2 years since it was “almost ready for launch” and just about 1.5 years since “we’re still working on it!”, I think it’s about time we get an official update that’s more than “not a priority.”
Such as “are you actually working on it at all? If yes, when is it coming? If no, why not? why isn’t it a priority?” if I promised you (and you paid for!!!) a steak dinner with a baked potato on the side, and said “the baked potato is almost ready, I’ll bring it with the steak or shortly after.” and then after you’ve waited 10 minutes, I said “I wasn’t happy with the baked potato, I’ll bring it to you when I’m happy with it.” and then you waited another 30 minutes without hearing anything and finally asked me where your baked potato was and I said “it’s not a priority.” on repeat. I don’t think you’d say “they gave me a steak and no potatoes because it wasn’t a priority, 5 star experience.”
Edit: and that’s not even mentioning all the issues with the “steak” in my analogy.
Every single iteration of extraction shooter/slasher has had an option to launch solo lobbies except Darktide. Despite those also being primarily Co-op Games. Hell, even Helldivers 2 let’s you play solo with the note that it’s going to be much harder because they won’t give you bots.
It’s an extraction shooter just like L4D and Vermintide. You fight your way to a boss/extraction point. Hordes being on the route is part of the genre
Killing Floor 2 (from what I remember) is a Horde shooter where you just kill waves of enemies until you lose/want to stop.
Edit: you could say that Extraction Shooter/Slasher is a sub-genre of Horde Shooter/Slasher the same way that Diablo-clone is a sub-genre of ARPG, which also contains games like Dark Souls and Kingdom Hearts.
Extraction shooters refer to shooting games where your success won’t be based on your number of kills, but on the objectives you complete . Sure, some of the objectives will require you to kill enemies that come your way, but that won’t always be the focus of the mission. In most cases, you’ll have to find specific loot or rescue someone , and then escape the area alive (hence the extraction term).
Bold was copied over from the quote, not added by me. And seeing as this genre is not about the kills you get but about completing the objective and leaving alive, it fits. But the exact genre of Darktide/Vermintide is not really the point of my comment, it was shorthand so I didn’t have to type:
Left 4 Dead, Left 4 Dead 2, Vermintide, Vermintide 2, Helldivers 2, Killing Floor 2, Risk of Rain 2 (lots of 2’s.), Back 4 Blood, World War Z, Deep Rock Galactic, GTFO, and many more, are all primarily coop games that allow their players to launch the mission solo, most give you Bots but it’s not a requirements. The sole exception that I’m aware of is Darktide, which is a major problem. Darktide is the only game in this weird coop shooter/slasher genre that actively says “you HAVE to play with other people, it’s a coop game!” which is why my latest efforts in the official announcements and Dev Blogs has been to call out how having sections for “cooperative gameplay!” on the new game mode is pointless as that’s literally the only option.
Edit: and just a reminder that the ability to have a private lobby at all was not in the game at launch, so if you wanted to play with a friend or two, you were forced to have a random player or two fill the empty slots.
an extraction shooter entails fighting against NPC’s and other players for loot, not fighting against hordes of enemies to complete an objective.
darktide is a horde shooter, meaning that you must fight through hordes to get to an objective which you then complete to escape.
KF2 is an arena shooter, which means that you survive as many rounds as you can for as long as you can and don’t leave unless under certain conditions, meaning that you survived a number of rounds allowing you to extract, you completed that levels “story”, you died, or you just straight up left the game all together. it could also be called a survival shooter but i personally wouldn’t because it doesn’t make sense to me.
mate genres are just heuristics used to help people place things in buckets, theres no sharp lines between them. “extraction” shooter is not mutually exclusive with other genres/adjectives like “horde” or “arena”. darktide is an extraction shooter, it is a horde shooter, it is a horde extraction shooter. you could call it a “grimdark fantasy co-op horde extraction sword and sorcery shooter RPG” and all those genres fit. splitting hairs over genre boundaries tends to miss the point. it’s like tagging, what do players associate games with, if the tag/category helps players find the game and find others who share the interest, then it’s “correct”
it’s sci-fi not fantasy, so i can already tell you don’t know what you’re talking about. regardless, if you think darktide is an extraction shooter i’m going to have to ask you to go back to malice until you unlearn rushing in and looting everything you can because that’s a really bad habit in higher difficulties.
No one said “run around looting everything”, the description of Extraction Shooter that I found fits Darktide. It’s not a kills based shooter, it’s about completing objectives and getting out (extracting) but again, this is irrelevant to the topic. Every primarily coop shooter/slasher regardless of genre (Halo and CoD are also shooters primarily focused on PvP and they even offer solo campaigns ffs) except Darktide.
Edit: also, it’s Sci-fi Fantasy. Which again, is neither here nor there.
the fantasy genre is so broadly inclusive, you’re either trolling or just being willfully obtuse. yes it is also sci-fi. miss me with that 12year-old-on-Xbox style trash-talking
anyway +1 to solo mode, it’s important for a game’s longevity. it’s great for build-crafting without risking anybody else’s runs. I play solo in VT2 when im testing out stupid builds for fun, but in Darktide i just have to bring my silly off-meta experiments into other people’s games and hope for the best xD
