Private penances are the dumbest thing ever and heres why

most people in darktide like to do penances for the progress that they grant in the penance pass thing and the fact that some just give good cosmetics. unfortunately, some of them are just outright going to grief anybody who’s on the team if you try to do them. for instance, the private penance on zealot, it requires to you be so far away from your team that you’re in france while they’re on mars, not to mention the fact that you have to be low health to complete the penance.

the psyker private penance is also an issue if you don’t have friends that play darktide due to their PC’s or their lack of ability to play or other reasons because not only can you not get into a private game, you also can’t do the penance at all. even if you COULD get into a game without people, the bots would kill whatever boss comes at you before you can do the amount of damage you need to do unless you can deal a large amount or 20% before the bots can do any or the bots died beforehand.

both of these penances needed changes and thats why they were made private but being made private isn’t really going to make anything better. it’ll stop players from being griefed by the zealot penance, it’ll stop psykers from having to rush ahead into a DH spawn just to kill it, but that just replaces those problems with a new problem. the problem being that people don’t wanna do private games or they just can’t do private games. not to mention that the mod that allows you to play solo will keep you from progressing, which makes it so that you can’t get the penance while using it.

these penances just needed tweaking, the way that these issues were handled was not only horrible but also didn’t even address the issues while also introducing new ones in the form of needing to premake a team when some people don’t have the ability to do so.

and no, don’t say that discord is needed here, people shouldn’t need discord for something like this, not to mention the fact that some people can’t and/or don’t wanna register their phone number with discord.

the chat system needs to be improved so that its more like warframes (I.E. has an LFG section and has actual moderation so that it isn’t as bad as it is now along with has a squad chat function that isn’t hidden behind pressing tab) and the penances should just be improved and worked on so that they don’t grief/aren’t griefable.

The only private penances that are still in the game, could simply have the “private only” requirement removed, and they would be fine.
They were nerfed so hard, that they are no longer very difficult to achieve in a random group.

Nothing about this penance requires you to be far away from your teammates.
Still, it might be a good idea to forbid the use of invis abilities for this penance, if it was to be made available for pubs.


This is a terrible cope that multiple people have come up with.
If you actually want to find someone to group up with, you can use the ingame chat.
It is not great, but it works.

I agree with global or regional chats generally being a good thing. Darktide would very likely benefit from those.

Thing is, large public chats require constantly active moderators (or radical filters, which usually make the chat terrible).
Moderators usually cost money.
Moderators that cost no money and have a lot of time for their unpaid “job”, often are a type of person that should not be given any type of power.

actually, digital extremes did fix this little issue by making a botmod. they called it kickbot and it moderates the chats while also giving people info like “when baro” and “how do i get rhino” and the such. digital extremes did a great job on making kickbot but it does still need a bit of work but its still a great mod and its not exactly going to be a corrupt [REDACTED] unlike some people would be.

When i played WF, they also had human mods in addition to the bot.
Also, the bot mod has (or at least it had) the issue that it immediately temp bans people for using certain words, independent of the context.

from what i can tell, they fixed those issues as the human mods aren’t really around anymore as far as i can tell and kickbot won’t tempban you for stuff like saying trap in the context of a literal trap like a beartrap but will still temp ban you for calling nezha a trap.

With the recent progress in “AI”, it seems reasonable to assume that bot moderators might have gotten better as well.

A good bot mod really might be enough these days.
It is important for a chat to work without radical filters that simply block half of the words that you might want to use (Skull & Bones has such a filter and it is hilariously bad).

I hope that we will get a proper chat system (including an LFG chat as you proposed) as well as a larger number of players being allowed in the same HUB.

lets back up a bit, botmods can be enough but only if the botmod(s) are made well, human moderators are still going to need to be in the game until the botmod(s) can do the job as good as a human.

Agreed, this change was just a downright bizarre way to avoid having to rebalancing those penances…

True but some of them are still quiet sill, like the finale psycker one where you have to kill a monstrosity and 50% of its healthbar with brain burst. Totally counter to teamwork, basically you have to force your team to let you solo a monstrosity. So dumb…

You don’t have to “force” anyone to do anything.
You can kindly ask your team to slightly lower their boss dps, although even that is not necessary at all.

Now that the penance only requires you to deal 50% of the boss dmg, you do not even need to ask anyone for anything.
Taking out 50% of a bosses HP via Brain Rupture, takes around 30 seconds on heresy. I have not played on heresy difficulty for a while, but i would guess that bosses do not always die within 30 seconds of the moment they spawn. It should be relatively easy to get this penance by just playing the game and paying attention to boss spawns.
If a boss spawns when only part of the group is nearby (or while a horde is around), you should get it pretty much guaranteed.

When ever someone gets a Demonhost infight, they tend to run away in a chaotic manner, making it quite difficult for melee and gun users to deal decent damage.
Meanwhile, you can easily do your full DPS with Brain Rupture anyway.
Since the person running away is not dealing damage, you are only competing with a maximum of 2 other players for boss dmg, so a DH should almost guarantee you to get this penance.

I see your point, if I put together a beastly enough brain burst build I would likely eventually get it done in a random match. But since it is private game only that will never happen sigh. WHY DO YOU FORSAKE ME SO FATSHARK?!?

Man. It’s 50% now?!
I did it with almost 100%, to trigger the old “over 90%” threshold.

That’s a good change tbh. 90% was just stupid. More a challenge for team mates than yourself.

The original version of the penance actually required 100% boss dmg with brainburst.
The 90% version was already nerfed (which was reasonable).

I did the 100% kill in a pub, where i asked the guys to let me solo a plague ogryn.
I started sweating quite a bit, when a horde spawned. Then i got quite nervous, when a poxburster came after me and i had to deal with it, without letting the explosion damage the boss.

That was quite something. Was fun though.

Imo if they insisted on keeping it “private only”, they should have kept the requirement somewhere around 80-90%.
Since they lowered it to 50%, there is no more reason to limit it to private only.

Thinking back, yeah, you’re right. 90% is actually much easier as it means you can simplify the task with an Ogryn who grabs DH aggro. I didn’t try it until it was the 90% as I didn’t have a group to play with then.
