Power sword isn't fun

They just really need to make it so we don’t need to activate the sword in literally every single situation. You’re always better off dodging or pushing then activating it, rather than hitting them with the pool noodle.

There would have been no arguments over this sword if the special mode was more akin in design to the Cruxis Thunder Hammer. (it would have been underpowered, probably, but still)

Its actually a strong normal melee weapon, funny enough. The problem is it isnt cool.

This.

Powersword was massively OP. Now it’s just really, really, really strong - up there with BM Axes. Still one of the most used weapons for melee clear by the range-focused class.

Sorry you think it sucks.

I came to the forum to find out what the hell happened to power swords, this is very disappointing! Switched back to vet yesterday to get the new penance skins and was struggling to clear POX HORDES! what the hell guys? What were you thinking? Have i missed somthing? Does Vet have no horde clear now? Because melee on vet feels horrible now. Can you fix it please? I don’t have power cycler, or the desire to grind for weeks to get it as i don’t play much vet. But if only one blessing makes a weapon useable just make it part of the weapon instead! Also Vet players seem to be the worst at melee fighting, probably not former VT2 players so they need a good melee weapon!

Power cycler is also available as a T3 blessing now (+1 additional attack per charge).
So it is pretty easy to get i think.

But without power cycler, it really does not perform well.

That is a so called ‘skill issue’, and to solve it you need to ‘git gud’.

Even now PS is still one of the best horde clearing weapons in the entire game, even without PC.

I’m with the OP - the activation mechanic wasn’t fun before the absurd nerf and is atrocious now…

I suggested in another threat how I’d like the powersword represented: Special is an on/off button like with the flashlight. Off is the normal power sword in it’s dead form now. On has the same damage profile as off but ignores armor and has double cleave at the cost of stagger remove.

This way the weapon would behave more like in lore, would be more fun to use then it’s now and in the eyes of hardcore players propably better balanced then now.

PC could in that case be turned into a constant damage buff in activated mode.

Op is right… it is not fun

However, it is really strong. Even without PC.

How about a new weapon that works the way you guys would like?
And the power sword can stay the way it is (which some other people like).

This isn’t true. Due to a bug, pre-nerfed power sword consistently was able to get 3 powered attacks off on non-elite (crushers, maulers ect.) enemies. With the nerfs they also fixed this bug.

So currently a t4 (!) Power Cycler PS is about the same strength as a pre-nerfed one without 1 blessing slot.

Currently, it basically got nothing going for it compared to some of the other Vet options apart from a bit quicker clear time against horde-type enemies, and even on that front, it’s not that notable compared to other classes’ options.

It’s basically nothing special with a lot of busy work and horrible mobility in a class that is already the weakest in melee. Design-wise it’s a win-more weapon, but currently it isn’t winning enough. It doesn’t fulfill either a generalist role or a specialist role better than a simple axe.

I think the main issue is that it doesn’t fulfill either the previous fantasy of absolute slaughter or the logical role of “go-to” option currently.

It should be changed either by:

  • Get some power back by giving the base variation back the now fixed 2 activations opening up build possibilities other than just going for Cycler. (With possible additional balance changes to keep it in line)
  • Move it into a more specialist direction by either making it a high-cleave and (little to) no stagger weapon when activated with an extremely high armor pen.
  • Changing the base design of the win-more weapon into a more generalist role like the Illisi by increasing its mobility, increasing dodge count and distance, and removing slowdowns on activation.

I’m open to other “fixes”, I just want something to make me want to run PS again from time to time. I think the worst sin of a Class weapon is if it isn’t special enough, and I would put it firmly into that basket. It can be run, and it does have damage, but it’s just meh.

Multiple other people suggested the same, when the PS was nerfed.
Bumping it back up to 2 base charges sounds good to me, because this would

  • remove the neccessity to use Power Cycler (like you said)
  • be less annoying to use for those who dislike “having to constantly reactivate the weapon special”, with now 4 charges max, when using Power Cycler 4

Imo the way the PS generally performs (with power cycler), is pretty much perfect for a melee weapon on a class that is mostly about ranged combat.

Pretty much. Most of the power coming from the pre-nerfed non-cycler version was the bug that allowed 3 activations reliably. 4 activations with cycler would be fine too, less tedious and it wouldn’t be game-breaking.

You’d think so!? But I’ve checked in a Melks every day for about 4 months and brunts at least as often, completed 70+ hours on the veteran, and power cycler has never dropped as an option for me.

Basic power sword just feels cruddy. Uncharged it’s like hitting someone with a spatula. I’d prefer an illisi any day of the week. Meanwhile my vets melee options just feel “meh”

Unlucky.
But since it is now available as T3, you can just upgrade a few Power Swords and get it that way.

By „brunts at least as often“ i assume you mean the store with hourly reset.
That one only gets t1 and t2 blessings iirc.

Nope - very rarely T3 blessings.

Yeah - making the weapon so that you have to RNG a lot and use up one blessing slot to get it back where it was before the nerf was a really great decision…

Yeah that is just not true either. Pre nerf & fix you could get 4 empowered heavies, nevermind the fact you could keep it up indefinitely if you knew how. Also having to trade in 1 of your 2 blessing slots for a comparable, but not equal, level of power is not to be understated.

Honestly, 4 empowered swings was probably too good. I found 3 to be the sweet-spot for how good it is vs. how often you have to reactivate it. I would’ve liked 2 swings at base and have PC be a +1. Now that there is a T3 & T4 version the better solution would be: 2 Swings at base, any version of PC adds 1 swing and have the T4 version do something additionally like a bigger window to chain attacks together before having to reactivate or slightly better AP values etc. This way, it’s also more RNG friendly and likely the precise reason why it won’t happen  :gun:

The way it works currently, agreed. There could’ve been more elegant ways to realize a PS but it’s more than serviceable. I know that there are some that think it’s still too good and it needs additional downsides (looking at you Ralendil) but gone are the days of the PS “ruining the player experience” of others.

My point was that the current PS with Cycler is worse than the pre-nerf PS without Cycler. What you wrote is basically that I understated how much worse it is.

There isn’t anything untrue in what you quoted.

So I just started playing veteran for the first time after coming off of maining psyker for a hundred hours or so and having completed all the penances for the class, and I gotta say, the only thing a base power sword without blessings does worse than the godly Illisi force sword is have a much shorter dodge distance.
I’m sorry to people who have been maining veteran and having fun on God mode before the PS nerf who are disappointed about it now, but it is in no way weak or useless compared to any other classes melee weapons in the game, and this is a weapon for a ranged specialist here whose main source of crowd control is and always was meant to be an infinite supply of regenerating grenades, not the best sword in the game.
Sorry if it’s not even the second best sword in the game anymore, but you have to understand that’s ok given the class & role it is supposed to play, and consider that it is still as good as the best melee weapon psyker has access to and can even be upgraded to have multiple enemy melting swings per activation on top (at no cost, as often as you want to!!).
If you want to live out a melee power fantasy, maybe try not doing it with the dedicated ranged specialist in the game :man_shrugging:t2:
I started playing heresy the moment I unlocked the PS at level 13 and am doing perfectly fine with it, I get downed a lot less than other people in my squad just because I’m used to surviving as a squishy psyker on damnation, and a power level 200 PS is enough to carry me through even without feats & blessings.
