I’m not asking you make the current maul and shield combo crazy, however I think some other options like the mk1 club, the shovel and some of the knife variants should really be more than other forms to deal with CC. Ogryn needs something that can actually make use of the heavy weight trait at level 10 and give ogryn some more purpose to fighting big guys outside of just tanking the daemon host.
I currently use the shovel at the moment because it’s at least ok against most targets while keeping a nice moveset, however I want more options in the skullbreaker kit to be actually worthwhile. Compared to the catatchan dagger, Chain axe, MkIV chainsword and MkII axe for example, the ogryn melee for me just doesn’t feel impactful or fun outside of Crowd control. In a game where you can play as any character and have a variety of ways to play a character, I don’t want one character in the roster to only be about crowd control and have no real way to partake in other forms of play.
For example, the Zealot can have access to many of the core ranged weapons such as the headhunter autogun, the various lasgun varieties ( outside hellbore I believe ) and even partake in owning a bolter which isn’t my favorite weapon, but the bolter is powerful against crushers, something the skullbreaker struggles against.
Sure, we have the grenade box, however, I feel the grenade box shouldn’t be the support we have to horde onto in order to have any real retaliation against mutants, crushers and boss’s. I think some of the ogryn ranged is nice but could use some tweaks. I can’t say the same for ogryn melee which seems to be various knives that pale in comparison to the shovel and the slab shield/ maul.
I wish we had access to the power maul shown in the ogryn trailer on youtube or that the knife variants had more of an impact on unyielding or flak armored targets at least.
I want ogryn to feel powerful in melee because some of us don’t want to be stuck with the shield forever.
The Daemon host isnt designed to be tanked. Thats another topic. The Ogryn excels at stagger, push block everything. Positioning is very important for the big boy.
Chopping multiple elites and chaff in half is glorious and a lot of fun. Maybe the current class just isnt your thing, and when new Ogryn types come out, it will fit your playstyle?
I think ogryn is fine, my only struggle is the other enemy ogryns, which luckily are big enough for the team to focus first. I just stagger them to narnia.
-The cleaver mk III is a power house, the light attacks chew through just about anything. I prefer it to the shield. Sure the shield can block range, its just not my style. I find its melee too slow and annoying to deal with chaff. The shields stagger is incredible, but I dont capitalize on the stagger as fast as I like, which is why I use the cleaver. Im sure a well co-ordinated team will help capitalize on the ogryns stagger, but the overall pubs currently are not there yet.
Push the funny punies down and give em a smak!
Just give everything else a shove, his grenade launcher weapon can knock anything (except boss) over.
“I think ogryn is fine, my only struggle is the other enemy ogryns, which luckily are big enough for the team to focus first. I just stagger them to narnia.” That’s literally the point of this post. Other classes have options to better deal with these and in a game where we’re not limited to how many of each character type we can play in a match, there should be viable options for various situations in each class. Currently I feel ogryn doesn’t meet that standard other characters are a part of.
The topic title is misleading, but I understand now. An armor piercing weapon for the Ogryn!
I would also like to see an Armor piercing weapon for the Ogryn, I not to versed in 40k lore if Ogryns have this, we also do not have a fleshed out crafting system to understand traits.
Im sure the Ogryn will have that option in the future.
I dunno I feel like my shovel does pretty decent damage. Horizontal attacks for crowd control. Overhead for ouchie time. Don’t get my wrong I’ll take extra damage if they give it to me but it doesn’t feel bad to me as is. Maybe the club just needs to be able to do weakspot damage. It doesn’t look like it does in the meatgrinder.
They have a power maul and in the past editions of warhammer they were able to use things like the chain axe but in the 8th and 9th edition codex their relegated currently to the huge knife which give -2 ap and the bullgryn maul which is -1 ap. For reference the power sword is -1 ap as well.
So they are adding the power maul next patch but I would love to see the mk IV knife get a buff and be able to deal more damage since it doesnt really have good horde clear in its moveset. That’s the main thing here is that I just want more options that allow the ogryn to do more than just slap things around and knock them down. On Tabletop we use the Bullgryn maul to deal with space marines. I’ve read a few books such as the yarrick omnibus and gaunts ghost but I haven’t honestly seen anything outside of Braag that really constitutes an ogryn in the lore outside whats written in the warhammer wiki and the warhammer codex’s.
shovel is currently my go to weapon when I’m with my friends. I run it with 3 trinkets to increase my toughness and gunner resist by 15% each. My shovel has the confident strikes blessing and gains power the longer you hold a heavy attack. It certainly does the job for now.
Ogryn has 2 options for dealing with armor or high hp specials and they both work great
-The bully club does massive damage even to carapace armor. The heavy attacks hit for hundreds and the third light attack hits for over a hundred on carapace.
The ogryn also has a talent that causes bleed on heavy attacks and the bleeds rip targets apart. I personally use the bleed with shield and since shield can can knock any target out of their attack with the heavy attacks including crushers, ragers, or whatever you will probably get the kill with your bleed.
What ogryn needs is a good armor piercing gun to use when you use his anti horde melee weapons like the bull butcher cleaver that everyone loves
im fully onboard with how oggies got the finger when it came to weapons, but dont forget the special atatcks most of the non shield weapons have specials with insane stagger and can bully anything around even crushers
I’m not so convinced that damage is the issue. Both Cleavers are our dps weapons, you can basically clear rank4s just light attack spamming with a multihit blessing for toughness. The Shovel is nice, but not as deadly as the cleavers, especially the mk3.
The others add some stagger or heavy attack damage so their damage is lowered, which makes sense.
I would say though that the lack of variety is what is crippling, since all of the weapons feel pretty much the same.
I’m playing Ogryn and Psyker and switching to psyker it’s nice to be able to change up my melee and ranged weapons to get a slightly different feel to both kinds of gameplay, this isn’t really something you can do with Ogryn. As all the weapons feel pretty much the same, they’re all kind of slow, even the faster cleavers and they all have rather long wind-up for heavy attacks.
The shield is probably the only thing you can change a bit and that’s probably the only weapon i think should get a bit buffed, at least it’s light attack swings. possibly add a larger first hit bonus to it, as this would kind of give it a crusader/sword n board feel of swing, block swing.
I think simply adding more melee weapons for ogryn would be better, especially crazy big darksouls great swords that block out the sun or mauls so heavy it’ll give you hernia for trying to swing them. but also quicker and nimbler weapons.
I mean I’d love a pair of brass knuckles, boxing my way through a horde, seems like that’d be a nice change for a quick weapon.
Grenadier is already a nice weapon to build on, possible make it into a boxing set where the main use of it is instead melee weapon with boxing moves and the special is a counter with a grenade smack to the face.
As the current grenadier melee moves is rather… lackluster imo… sry to whoever animated them, but there’s just lost potential there.
