Penances with Strangers - surprising fun “endgame”

So I’ve been really surprised by how much fun I’ve had helping strangers complete their penances.

Some of the craziest and most memorable games I’ve played have started with a stranger asking if I could help them complete a penance.

I’ve heard people complain that penances require anti-team play, and I had wondered a bit about that because I’m pretty team focused. In practice though, I’ve always had people ask if I could help. The result has been games that require the team to play very differently than normal - adding variety and challenge that has been a lot of fun. Running ahead solo in damnation and trying to clear chaff and gather specific enemies to kite back was something I never would have otherwise done.

Penances being a bit hard and a bit weird and requiring unusual play has been surprisingly great-in practice and it isn’t what I expected when I first read them, or heard complaints about them.

If you are wondering about getting a penance try asking your teammates if they’ll help. I’ve been surprised just how cool people who play this game are.

Most people are helpful, that is true. A few times I asked as well people were willing to go along but…in some cases you really a detriment to your team, eg; Make every shot count.
Heresy difficulty, you do what you gotta do and rest of the mission use melee ? Good luck to any team without a designated ranged elite mob killler. I don´t count Psykers as their head pop is utter sh*te compared to Veterans dealing with ranged mobs,
can´t go through obstacles such as see through fences with gaps inbetween bars the size of a grand canyon, yet mobs can clearly shoot through them and Veteran can shoot as well.

People can help only so much when you have sh*t mechanics, bugged penances, bugged mobs etc and most of the time penance " endgame " results in a wipe sooner or later. But I get your point, it´s a somewhat fun challenge.

Oi! There are very specific targets that BB does really well and then a bunch it deals with very poorly.

BB is great for: Trappers, Bombers, Bulwarks, Crushers, Reapers, Dreg Gunners, Dreg Shotgunners, Scab Gunners and Scab Shotgunners & Snipers.

  • It will oneshot everything but Ogryns.
  • It will invalidate the armor on Ogryns letting your team kill them easily.

A Psyker that is not focusing on killing Trappers, Bombers, Gunners/Shotgunners & Snipers as well as opening up Ogryns with BB is a bad Psyker.
This allows the Veteran to deal with: Ragers (Unarmored and Armored), Maulers, Flamers (Tox and Regular), Hounds & Mutants and then focus on whatever is remaining of what the Psyker can deal with.

BB does not scale with difficulty, so you won’t one-shot most of what you mentioned on T4+. A Vet with Bolter can unload a clip on either of them and reliably kill them.

Hello, Psyker here, playing Damnation.

BB targets that I listed are oneshot.
Vet targets that I listed are two shots (this doesn’t change from Heresy to Damnation)
Ogryns from Heresy onwards are 3 shots.

If in doubt, feel free to go into the Meat Grinder yourself and test it out. All Psykers know this, I don’t know why everyone else peddles the “it can’t oneshot anything because it doesn’t scale” when that is incorrect.

Yes, a Vet can kill them… Approximately 0.5s faster than a Psyker, but with the flipside that he can be suppressed and/or takes damage whilst doing so, the Psyker kills 0.5s slower, but with the flipside that he cannot be suppressed and can do it while in safety.

That is all true but, sometimes as the only psyker in the game and without a veteran with me, I have to deal with snipers etc. which surprisingly shoot through obstacles and BB can’t target through obstacles.

Yeah, well… I think most Psykers would love for us to be able to target through railings and similar consistently… It was worse in the Beta, it’s gotten better with release though with more railings allowing you to target…
