Overcomplicated Horsesh*t: Why Darktide's Systems Make No Sense

Rather embarrassingly, I didn’t find out what the stimms, aside from health, actually did until over 1k hours lol.

It was only when the penances arrived that I discovered what they actually did.

I was like “what the hell does a celery stimm do?!”

Not once are they explained anywhere. Like most mechanics in DT then.

They explain them!

…in the forum posts when they’re announced.

I guess making tutorials is hard or smth.

I think tooltips would work well in this game.

Paradox games you can UI hover over something, it will explain it.

Learning within the game without having to alt+tab/google

The relevant paragraph could of been tooltips when you hover over a blessing or skill node

Perk +20% Flak. Make a tooltip like below list the enemies vertical fashion, but use set colours for flak, carapace for body parts. Carapace for head, other parts Flak.

Scab Mauler image image

Curio +20% Gunner Resistance. Anything with a gun. Nope, list them, name again mini picture for visual

I didn’t realise it wasn’t for all gunners! FFS lol.

Where do we find out what gunners it is for?

Only these:

Scab Gunners
Dreg Gunners
Reapers

Not any of those smaller enemies with guns

These 3 are the ones which cause large suppression to player.

Might be better off replacing gunner resistance with other attributes that are more consistent without being enemy situational.

And I would honestly swap big gunner resistance for little gunner resistance, f* those lil bastards!!!

Just re-quoting this so I can give it more hearts.

And if tooltips are too bulky for the UI, give us a great big grimoire full of explanations of game mechanics!

As far as weapon stats go, there is a summary damage number for people who don’t want to think too hard and then there is the inspection window for people who love thinking hard.

Can’t make it much more user-friendly than that.

But the thing is also that weapon stats are this way because all the people who wanted to do less math in VT2. You can look it up from the earliest days of the DT wing of this forum. One of the biggest complaints vocalized on here was that they felt the breakpoint system required them to do math homework. There was a very easy-to-use, fan-made damage calculator for those motivated to use it, but that wasn’t what they wanted. Some of the more popular suggestions were for randomized enemy health on a per unit basis or randomized damage on a per swing/shot basis or even both at the same time. Maybe it could have worked but it seems like a lot more opportunity for RNG to bone you over.

Instead they went with another popular suggestion: randomized damage on a per weapon basis. Still the case but now that’s pretty limited because getting a max 80% roll is trivial. Because it turned out most people didn’t like that system. It was either a case of the squeaky wheel getting the grease and it was just a very vocal minority (the people who were largely quite happy with VT2 obviously didn’t flood the forums to vent their grievances) or they were the casual types who played to level 30 and then considered the game “beaten” and are no longer with us.

So we already got where we were trying to appease the “don’t wanna think hard” crowd. I think the summary number is all the more they need. If your "friends’ " complaints are that they got in over their heads when they dive in the deep end, there’s not much that can be done for them.

“a 0% damage plasma gun does 24% less damage than a 80% plasma gun”

Reading this at 7 AM when I haven’t slept is giving me a migraine

If FS look at Paradox games. Very good use of UI and tooltips. i.e Victoria 3 game I play.

Hover over something it pops up tooltip to explain. There is a word in there don’t understand, hover/click to go further another smaller popup.

Wiki built right into their games using index and search. I never have to alt+tab out to look at web browser.

If anything it makes more sense for FS to do as console players not expected to have separate laptop/desktop next to them.
