Overall Feel of Darktide is Lacking

lol ok! I’m working my way through the books by Dan Abnett (y’know, the preeminent Warhammer author who worked on the world-building for Darktide), and I’m really enjoying them. There’s humor (or attempts at humor) and silly crap in all of them. Everyone is steeped in the grim darkness, but people are still people…trying to get by, trying to get one over on others, trying to crack a joke or be of good cheer.

Most people here agree a few quips are absolutely believable, in moderation. What I’m saying in writing this post is that its become far too prevalent as of late and its shifting the entire tone of the game. Dan Abnett help build the world, but far less talented people are the one’s writing the dialogue.

If there are people who personally don’t care about the dialogue either way, which there are plenty, I don’t understand why they argue against steering the game to a more serious and balanced tone.

Worst part about Dukane is how it’s not ever shown or even suggested that she partakes in battles or fights like a Commissar would in 40k. Literally all we see or know of her is how she just stands there and whines and people pay her respect for seemingly no apparent reason. But really she just stands there in some nice clothes and whines.

One could make a finer point about horseshoes here, an extreme sexist would probably portray a female Commissar this way too.

Exactly! Poor writing aside, we have no prior knowledge of any of her achievements. Not that it would be believable anyway, I mean she’s about 5 feet tall and has the attitude of a 21 year old sorority girl.

Zola and the Penance Priestess are great examples of how to implement respectable female characters.

Abnett working on DT worldbuilding is on the same level Martin worked on Elden Ring, lol.

Indeed, so the type of humor should be more harsh for convicts doing suicidal missions, like gallows humor. “First one to die is a grox lover” n’stuff. People who deal with death on regular basis have a completely different type of humor.

To be fair when I hear

hey hey hey, Hallowette here. This vox working?

it does make me want to hang myself, so it’s kind of gallows humor

Yeah this 100%

I mean I like it for hardon and kx8 purely because it’s actually uniquely written and distinctly 40k with the mechanicus.

The other characters are insufferable it’s quirky do you find our characters likeable because they’re so quirky and funny haha.

Can’t wait for Grendel to be revealed and they’re just as quirky and silly as the rest of the crew.

Play a max difficulty mission on the lights out modifier with a flashlight and the entire game just plays like a whole different beast. A very scary, choas daemon filled beast.

Bud you lost this the moment you started whining about DEI.

I have my beef with Darktide’s plot but 90% of it is just the people running the show having preemptively shot themselves in the foot on every single aspect of narrative thanks to the RNG missions and refusal to use the rejects as characters. Not some whining about women characters or quippy dialogue. Learn to critically discuss things without buzzwords you got from either a YouTube personality or a pack of chuds on Reddit.

AlphaOmega does make a decent point that things being less difficult does rob the 40k feel, though.

I do wonder why Masozi explicitly has an african accent, is there precedent for this in 40k? I thought they speak gothic and it’s represented with british english

Grendyl’s Ordo Hereticus Warband probably doesn’t do that too often because the Missions that we’re sent on ARE the execution.

If we succeed, the Emperor has ordained it and we’re skilled enough to be worth keeping around for now. If we don’t… it doesn’t really matter if we get executed by a Chaos Cultist, a Traitor Guardsman or an Inquisitorial Acolyte at the end of the day.

Not always, as the Imperium’s incredibly diverse. Vostroyans are Slavic, Kriegers are (probably) Franco-German, Tallarns are Middle Eastern, etc.

Catachans are Australians like me, obviously.

True, I guess it’s just throwing me off because I never heard straight up african anywhere in 40k before

Grendyl deserves to be a good character, on par with the likes of Kayex, Hadron and Morrow.

Also, Swagger is 110% John Grammaticus.

Masozi is basically Abnett blatantly expying Media Betancore from his Eisenhorn books iirc

But her actual accent? It’s the Imperium. Literally anyone or anything could be there, especially for an Inquisitorial retinue that travels widely and collects high-end people from different planets like Pokemon.

I can’t wait for my NPC, just a character walking around the mourningstar, complaining about how he isn’t allowed to paint anything.

Imagine @Ragnarok101 's character, some guy huddled in a corner, watching things and writing in his book of grudges. He’s weird, but wants to share it with anyone in the command staff who will listen.

I object to this.

I would be a SERVITOR, not a person!

I could also see you being some kind of a Lexmechanic.

I guess you’re one of those “DEI is good and important” while at the same time denying it ever influences media.

The DEI talk (pro- or against) stops now. Politically charged topics and conversations are not allowed per the rules.
