Old dog / new tricks (ogryn got layers)

(was a bit bummed about the whole “ogryn bad” situation of late, so i was trying to push the big man some more :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes: / yes, he still needs love in some areas, no doubt about it :+1: )

ever since i ran across another excellent oggy, i was scraping my way out of the comfort zone that was the branx for me at that point.

while the build, loadout was in no means bad and suitable up til havoc, there still was room for improvement.

so basically i went full circle from karsolas to branx and back again, with two little twists.

build couldnt stay the same cause i was giving up the oneshot potential and carapace on my melee.

so the counter combo for branx/kickback/bullrush would be karsolas/rumbler/taunt where karsolas is the flak/maniac speed sweeper and the rumbler for unyielding/carapace to can-open.

what was really surprising to me after getting the hang of it was how completely different ogryn now plays for me, in particular being faster without bullrush :astonished:

gonna add a detailed build video soon for people interested

ironically i had tons more fun with auric maelstrom and HISTG playing “freely” and going ham than i ever did in havoc :man_shrugging:

oh, by the way, by testing for “max speed” trappers will be even more of a nuisance since committing to the sliding process, you’re dead set into the net sometimes.
add recent quickshots (trappers netting mid-sentence and not even finishing their audio) for even more fury :face_with_symbols_over_mouth:

then again, felt like playing whirwind barbarian in diablo 2, which was tons of fun

Nice! Lights out is one of my fave modifiers.

Also, its always nice to see someone who hasnt modded the smeg outta their game.

yeah, we had a bit of a “dark streak” the other day with a out everything there was being lights out either in maelstrom or infected event.

picked that match cause end of the day it was the most i could push myself to
plus mini-boss spawner was wild as well, which added a nice flow i think.

anyways, glad you like it.
rule of thumbs for my videos, i keep em as immersive as possible.

with randoms i cant go completely without ui for obvious reasons, but the rest should resemble an entertaining darktide “episode” and only minimal “gamey” references

I literally did the same thing recently, love the Branx and love it’s move-set, but I ran the karsolas and just went hard with it and in a maelstrom did 888 kills and 300 one-shots!

its kinda like a training montage where you need to go through these steps in order to see the progress and potential beyond whats first glance.

when i started karsolas, it was way better than any knife/club/shield in terms of getting stuff dead quick.

and it was “good enough”.

at some point though i dipped my toes into the one-shot-guarantee that is the branx and thought “wait a minute, i can do this but fast”

so next 2-3 months was branx to the next plateau and it too was good, especially with the brute conscripts event.

what i didnt take into account still then was the symbiosis between outsourcing the unyielding/carapace to the ranged weapon as a debuff and integrate the faster kill speed of the karsolas into a 3 component motion so to speak.

as silly as ogryn as a platform sounds for this revelation, it was a process that made me enjoy the character better and improved me as a player.

truth be told though, i cant keep the karsolas frenzy up for any longer than say 3-4 hours before mind’s tilt and fingers cramping.

damn, what would 20 years old quake-me do with the game right now :smiling_face_with_tear:

branx is for a more “relaxed” maelstrom and get-it-done run

karsolas is the rhino snorting crack cocaine and be all outa bubblegum :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:

yeah I even ran it the same perks and blessings, just realized I might have to hit the big boys more than once but it wasn’t too big of a difference, just much faster!! My biggest thing to get used to was the different push attack, smacking them with the stick into the overhead is okay but I miss the branx push attack bulldozer swing

One match with the tac axe on zealot and my hand is grutting karked which is too bad cause axe murder is fun…ogryn needs a BIG grutting axe!

I dunno if I can subscribe to the Karsolas being faster. You can combo special into the pickaxe’s moveset quite fast. You basically cut off the middle of the animation doing it after a push attack. And on the Branx the special can hit 7 enemies for damage, applying the 10% extra damage taken ‘pull’ debuff unique to Pickaxe specials to each one. But they also take more damage than they would from a club light. It also chains back to the 2nd heavy.

It is a little hard to keep maxing possible attack opportunities having to work so many specials in but there’s definitely the least space in between attacks with the Branx special. Its just a question of using it the perfect minimal amount to only save yourself from enemy attacks. And the damage is just insane, off slaughterer/headtaker alone you can kill everything but bulwark in one hit in regular T5.

The benefit of the karsolas isn’t so much speed (though it sure feels faster to me) but safety since you can just spam crowd clear heavies and never lose toughness.

Good Stuff Index!

(add in some push attacks, might help with speed)

Inspiring, truly!

Would love to see your build here.

Personally I get ripped to shreds if I jump into Auric without a shield and FNP.

quick headsup @Brad9191 has earned huge rashuns today, might have sniffed a “secret ingredient”

after switching headtaker for wrath i could even ramp up the kill speed some more.

seems slaughterer and headtaker create a kind of overkill to ragers and maulers (naturally everything below as well) but dont spread as evenly.

so testing about 10 mathes today(only 5 successful thx to the "mittagsschicht) i can attest to its functionality.

my thanks

I felt the same way recently, so so I did a H40 with 2 Ogryns and no stinking Shouties or yellow toughness. Can’t promise that the gameplay you’ll watch from me is particularly good, but I did use the Karsolas, as did my fellow Ogryn on the team, so felt relevant to this topic anyway.

Oh and we played with Matteo, the weapon designer, so that was fun too. “Fatshark devs only play Malice” truthers BTFO

got a to-do list for the next couple days, amongst it borrowing a decent mic from gaming buddy pirx :flexed_biceps:

and get some build-videos done as well.

as things are right now, side effects of chemo therapy are all over the place for me.
messing with my concentration and even voice to some days where i dont even get out of bed (luckily these been rare last week)

(not wanting to turn this into a “sob-story” just an explanaition why i prefer playing when there’s “good time”, treatment is bearable albeit rough)

so in the “good days” i ravenously record content for my channel and to be honest, darktide’s been kind of a metric if “how good” i’m doing.

kinda at a loss seeing my videos not being as appealing as i think they might be, going the cinematic and pure gameplay route.

but i understand there’s only so much gain you can get from simple gameplay, compared to an explained how/why type of content.

think is, the former is just so much more fun to make

so yeah, i gonna record some more build videos for sure, as unscripted and chaotic they might be

i’m rather a practical guy, even refuse the measure when building backgrounds for my figure, just wildly go at it until it fits :exploding_head:

short build notes would

karsolas
slaughterer / wrath

(huge thx to @Brad9191 for adding the secret ingredient to the puzzle  )

flak maniac
essentials at 80%, you dont block much :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

rumbler
adhesive / the brittle thingie (dont remember right now)
carapace/unyielding

its basically the debuff machine when not using the branx for oneshots.

health curios 21%
5/5% health toughness
1x gunner 2x stamina regen(gonna go fast)

talents shout with big lungs
(gonna add games lantern pic, writing from phone right now, dislikes the site for whatever reason :man_shrugging: )
left tree down, only thing i dont pick is the very last

so yeah, thats basically the nutshell.

the other ingredient and what took me a while figuring out coming from branx, karsolas needs “recklesness” to a degree.

a tad under “leeeeroy” and just enoughs foam-from-the-mouth control to NOT catch every trapper and dog :stuck_out_tongue_closed_eyes:

cause downside for sure is the sliding scythe movement cant be stopped in time to dodge a trapper out of the blue.

branx&kickback = control
karsolas%rumbler = frenzy

both got their pros/contra, right now i enjoy the karsolas more.

hope that helped somewhat until my “erklärbär”-video is wrapped up :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:

Iv seen how rough that is on several loved ones. Keep on kicking!!!

Edit: Also, deffo gonna give the Karsolas with Slaughterer and Wrath a bash.

my sincere thanks,honest. :+1:

really feels in a weird place, not even came to terms with it yet either really.

much weirder to mention it,

(in the most positive sense of meaning not wanting to derail the topic, its a fun past time forum after all)

but i wanted to give an idea why i’m a bit stingy with “tutorial videos”

darktide right now means much more to me than “just a game”, kinda like a metronom of sorts, whether “i’m still in there”… like i said kinda weird…

so thx at fatshark of giving a real good “distraction” :rolling_on_the_floor_laughing:

anyways, back to theoricrafting :face_with_monocle:
as for the wrath, its a 2 component puzzle (for me at least)
first, until full stacks of slaughterer and wrath are up, you wont feel much
second, in order to keep them up, one need to up the aggression as well.

which needs special attention to trappers out of sight since the sliding attack is also a commitment to that direction, for better or worse.

got a better hang of it in the recent videos of mine, reminding myself of not overly get carried away :grinning_face_with_big_eyes:

oh btw, just freshly uploaded, heres the wrath karsolas in comparison

days been soso, but these fellows were really fun to play with :+1:

another edit:
will upload a C I VI next, first gonna get some shuteye now, that went exeptionally well with wrath… butter smooth :pinched_fingers:

edit 3, cant sleep :face_with_rolling_eyes:

until i get my loadout video done, i think this todays match here “explains” it a bit better.

the attack patterns out of context may not differentiate that much at face value.

what the karsolas offered me after “mastering” the branx was stiring it together with slide, dodge and the safety net of never ending heavy attacks.

this way i could speed my whole playstyle up to a maintainable level that builds stacks rather quickly and assuming there’s enough enemies to go around, keeps em there to cash in upon.

its pretty much what i want to explain by “branx = control / karsolas = frenzy”

both have their advantages but in terms of “going ham” the karsolas offers me as a player some more growth potential.

heck i’ve re-awakened some reflexes i havent felt since 2002 quake 3 tournament time and thought: where the fkk did these come from

gave me quite the nostalgic chuckle and the regret being born 20 years early :grinning_face_with_smiling_eyes:

so i tried wrath + slaughterer on my karsolas, annoyed that work got in the way of playing together today, and it’s much better than headtaker. main reason is the improved cleave. with HT it stacks more power per swing, but gets stuck in hordes. with wrath it cleaves through everything. just did a CI-VI with 3 good guys, and whatever came, chaff or armor, i just kept swinging and the bits kept flying.

branx is better against heavy stuff and monstrosities, i saw that during the brutes event where one headshot with the branx put enemy ogryns down, while karsolas required more hits. especially since you can put unyielding + carapace on it because anything smaller (flak + maniac) dies in 1-2 hits anyway, without the need of perks, and 4-5 smacks on its pimple deflate a slug. the only issue is that i don’t get that push-light-heavy combo as consistently as needed, push is sometimes followed by a strikedown which lacks crowd control, but at least it’s a skill issue i guess. karsolas is easier to use, at least for me.

have to see if borovian offers some interesting middle ground.

I’ve recently met the most insane Ogryn player I’ve ever met (with almost 5k hours in game).

He used the MK2 bully club and used rock quickswapping cancel to speed up its attack 2x times.

I was under the weather yesterday and we’ve lost all Havoc runs we did together, but I was honestly speechless how good he was. He also dodge slided perfectly and never got hit by shooters.

He told me he has an abandonned youtube channel, and I found the video where he shows the tech if anyone wants to see how it works.
