Nurgle gas lore question

i know the gameplay reasons behind it, but could someone please help me down the warhammer rabbit hole and explain why our gas masks would be inefficient against grandfather’s farts?

what would be the point handing out equipment when it offers no protection?

i’ve seen some cool artworks showing guardsmen melting at the slightest exposure, so if it was that nasty would our rejects even stand a chance sprinting through?

thx for the help on my ever growing journey through the warhammer universe.

Cause cosmetic ≠ gameplay.

As otherwise mtx would be much more egregious

like i said, i’m well aware about the gameplay necessity, was just hoping something in-lore to back it up.

kinda for immersions sake, same reason i modded fallout 4 to have visible helmet visors

Because it’s Grandfather Nurgles finest and it’s not exactly natural, it’s chaos corruption made . It can affect space marines too…

So what chance has the guard got.

The nurgle infections are immaterial in origin, so they kinda follow the same “laws” as immaterial creatures aka daemons.
They are hard to manifest into real space just like daemons and the worse or powerful they get the harder they are to wield or summon, however immaterial things can linger a bit longer in real space if they find a host. if they don’t have host or constant stream of invigorating chaos energy, they get banished back (a process you can accelerate also)

so in order to have really unfortunate outbreaks, you’d need a really powerful gateway, aka a powerful Nurgle Psyker, a cult capable of performing Large scale Rituals, a potent artifact that can act as chaos energy source, a powerful Deamon can act as source (even tho it would also be subject to decay) or a direct delivery from a warp drive capable ship like deathguard marines have.

so a cult has to make a wager, can and do they want a potent lethal plague that surely can infect and kill much faster, but in turn also dissipates faster. Considering they don’t have an Anchor to keep it in real space, OR do they want to infect many people “mildly” who remain “alive” and spread potentially further, with enough effort might make nurgle notice you and bestow you with more tools to keep his gifts anchored to real space.

Well, partialy for the same reason inquisitorial acolytes go on lights out maps without night vision goggles somehow, but with valuable tools like plasma guns, thunder hammers, etc. For the same reason we don’t have any gas masks or respirators.

And partialy cause of what people said - some Nurgle’s fine brew, he was testing on Isha probably.

Ogryn always eats his veggies ( and everyone elses) no need for gasmasks because ogryn are strongest

my thanks for making me smarter in warhammer lore, sah. :fist_right:

usually i combine painting figures with listening to baldermort and scholars lore but as of late havent had much time to spend besides darktide, so nurgle gas wasnt on the timetable yet.

TLDR nurgle’s gas isn’t just a toxic chemical or biological contagion that you can filter out of the air. It is also a metaphysical corruption powered by warp energy.

To give you another example, nurgle’s rot isn’t just a disease that kills people but also a magic spell that can turn dead people into undead poxwalker zombies.

every plague is different. this one is…notably less virulent than most which is why they were dumping full trainloads of it into residential areas to make sure it stuck.

i think the beasts of nurgle are the only ones getting summoned because nurgle doesn’t really have an interest in atoma but the big puppies will play with anyone.

Because its actually a nurgle coral. Think of it like those reefs that vent volcanic gases, only its concentrated plague spew and rot.

Again, my thanks. really enjoying the warhammer lore :fist_right:

Even in our world a gasmask doesn’t make you immune to chemical warfare - like a bullet proof vest it just improves your chances for survival.

There are plenty of different chemical weapons which all behave differently. By the end of WWI a chemical attack would combine different agents to maximise effect.

To me it seems rather plausible that Nurgle can create a gas that combines many attributes into one single agent.

That said the dark imperium trilogy is an excellent read and has some well written battles with Nurgle followers where they also use chemical warfare.

Or be selected with knowledge on what the enemy had at their disposal (iirc Mustard gas on the western front cause we had better Gas masks, while on the Eastern front they didn’t have enough of them so Chlorine gas was kept)

Wow wow is that a canonical depiction of Nurgle gas actually “burning” through those Guardsmen’s helmet/visor/face shield?

Damn!!!

Not rly, it’s the Life-eater virus bomb on this pic.
