Next Class Guessing

Avid optimistic darktider here who enjoys many hours across all the classes. I yearn for more classes and want to speculate on what the next one could be. I got into rogue trader after the arbites collab and am now drawn to the idea of a tech priest class in darktide. My hunger is slightly sated at the announcement of a Techmarine in space marine 2, but it simply isn’t darktide. Haven’t the slightest idea of how it would be implemented, but I’d love to hear what others think, both in regards to a darktide tech priest and a class you would like in the game.

I think the next class is very likely to be hired outlaw or bounty hunter of sorts. I don’t think they’re gonna do tech priest next, but bounty hunter is something in the middle power-level wise, just like Arbites.

I think they’re gonna do skitarii mercenary or some kind of tech priest acolyte, just not for the next one. It makes sense to leave tech guy for the future so there’s still something exciting to look forward to.

It has so be something from the Adeptus Mechanicus

Hadron has a line about partitioning them for support and now that true mobian steel is being produced and the means to produce it are secure they’re likely to want to come over and touch the ancient unique factorum and use the refound steel.

Also they and are getting more attention from gw recently (starting faction in dow4) (Mechanicus 2)

Also space marine 2 is getting a tech marine class next year, and now that we know we’re extremely likely to get a new class next year I wouldn’t be surprised if they do what they did with rogue trader this year with releasing the new arbities class alongside rogue trader releasing their new arbites class/character dlc and release a new ad mech class alongside the sm2 tech marine release

also that old radium rifle tease we got a while back (it was a plasma gun guys we swear we were teasing you with a gun that irradiates the user that was already in the game since launch)

The Orders Hospitaller are non-militant orders of the Adepta Sororitas**.**

The suitable options for the next class that I can see are:

  • Chiurgeon, a healer class. Male and female Chiurgeons could have Imperial Guard Medic cosmetics while female Chiurgeons could also have Hospitaller Carapace armour cosmetics.
  • Desperado (Hive Scum), a “gunsliger” class. Career criminals “recruited” into the warband. Their cosmetics and class-specific weapons could be based on the Necromunda Hive Gangs/Hive Scum and Desperados from the various RPGs and the Inquisitor skirmish game.
  • Skitarii Hypaspist/tech-acolytes, basic but still heavily augmented Skitarii or Tech priest unit that at higher levels may get fancy ad-mech weapon (Excluding any weapons would be too harmful to the rejects or would be too OP).
  • Sister Novitiate, this would be a way to add a stand alone Battle Sister class without them being too OP.

If I remember correctly, there were two new Archetype code names datamined at one point?

The first was “Adamant” which refers to Arbitrators, of course.

The second was “Broker” which almost definitely refers to… how would one say… some kind of Scum? It could be referring to Cold Trade Brokers? Members of Criminal Syndicates who trade in Xenos goods and/or Weapons. However, I’d expect them to be a bit more broadly adjusted as an Archetype than simply that for the sake of variety.

But I personally want an Admech Archetype more than anything else thus far.

I think it’s unlikely to be a class that is Sisters of Battle related, since then Fatshark will actually have to make body type B exclusive cosmetics. Unless they go the way of Monster Hunter Wilds where everyone gets windows and breastplates.

Hope they change that system where you’ll have to spend 4-5hrs grinding low tier missions to unlock next tier for new characters and therefore new DLC class.

Brand new player OK but not a high account with 2 years, at least start higher in mission tier.

I’d rather 20 new maps and more biomes to be worked on instead of a new class so soon after Arbites but if I had to choose one then it would still be Rattling.

People who say it’s unviable simply lack games design imagination. The mechanics would be so vastly different to other classes that it would truly feel different instead of just rehashed and reskinned cobbled mechanics from the other classes.

Something truly different that requires an entire new way of playing, would be very refreshing. Just because you can’t imagine it in the 10 seconds since reading this, doesn’t mean it couldn’t be imagined and designed by a skilled games studio.

As we’re pretty much limited to non-Astartes, non-Xeno, non-Hero, non-heretic, etc then there’s not many options left. Ad Mech or Rattling lol. Both would be cool but new maps gets all my votes for the foreseeable future.

Obviously I’d LOVE to play as a Xeno. Ork, Eldar, Tau, Necron, Nid etc. But DT pigeonholed themselves from the getgo.

Unlike doing body type A exclusive cosmetics with the Ogryn

Devs and artists have different fields of expertise…

There are ways (and tbh, I think the narrative lean toward that with the Eldar), the only issue is the weapon acquisition and modification, but that could quite easily be fixed by having some other NPC take over the role for those.

Depend on what you mean by Non-Hero I guess, but more so on what would qualify as Hero or not.

There are still quite a few things that can be added from the Imperial perspective that wouldn’t clash with the narrative that Ward direct, or the wider setting that Abnett has written.

  • Adeptus Sororitas: Not Sister of Battle, but rather directing toward smaller Orders, probably theming it on Saint Meselina
  • Squats: Basing it on the Necromunda Squats, while they did lose their home worlds, the door is still open on having some factions in different domains of the Imperium. (We do know that FS looked at the Squats, but they decided on having the Ogryn instead)
  • Adeptus Mechanicus: Some will say Tech Priests, other will say Skitarii, both feel quite pointed, and I’d rather thus have Tech Adept.

Ratling imo wouldn’t be a good fit for Tide games.

Designers however, are almost guaranteed to be fluid with tasks and it’s the Designers whom design the levels (OR (as is likely in the seemingly tiny DT office)) do other things.

In most reasonable sized studios there would be dedicated level designers but at this stage I think it’s fair to assume DT doesn’t have any dedicated level designers unfortunately.

So it is my belief it is an ‘either or’ situation, though I wish it wasn’t.

You’re getting my hope up but I just don’t see them tackling that. Oh how i would love to be proven wrong though!

But all you’re doing here is taking the samey mechanics of humans classes and reducing head height.

The difference with Ratlings is how different the mechanics could be. Very much a glass cannon but with some seriously different appraches to the game beyond ‘shoot and melee’. Psycher is radically different in this respect.

Your previous argument against ratlings was size if I remember correctly, but squats would be the same, no? And the scale works fine in VT2 surely.

As stated before, lack of imagination over player mechanics doesn’t mean it would be a bad fit. It just means you can’t imagine the mechanics. A solid group of designers in a studio could make any suggestion work if they had to. I just want something super different. We already have 3 classes that feel incredibly similar (IMO) so I don’t want another to blend into that further.

A potty-mouthed, over-confident ex-con rattling would hands-down be the absolute best fit in terms of game lore and vibe. I don’t doubt there could also be a lot of subtle humour from an ad-mech too. However my personal preference would still be a Rattling. My extensive post about it in the past has all the idea details from when I gave it a bit of thought.

But Ratling don’t have lore basis that would enable them to do things that aren’t done already.

And hell, the most different class atm would be the Arbites with the Cyber Mastiff.

While yes the PoV change does work against both Ratling and Squats, but Squats are still somewhat bigger than Ratling.

Which I don’t think is realistic scope.

Any candidate would still have to be able to use melee and ranged, as well as being able to use the Auspex and stuff.
This doesns’t bar the Ratling, but depending how different you mean it might.

Arco-flagellants are known to be employed by the inquisition.

That would make for some quite original gameplay.

That seems a bit short sighted. They can be explosive experts and sappers and obviously excellent at subterfuge, stealth, thieving and are very fast. They could use all manner of bombs and even use stolen weapons or pickups and have could be armed with darts, mini crossbows, catapults etc. All very different to the standard fare.

I’ve gone over lots of these suggestions in the previous thread though so won’t repeat them all here again.

You’re clearly very against a Ratling and have always been since the start. You’ve made up your mind and won’t budge. You won’t change your mind until something fun is already made and Infront of you to play, which is shame as your input would be useful. I can only assume you’re permanently dismissive stance is because you desperately want an admech instead and don’t want any favour to garner the Ratling…which is a totally understandable stance if you really want an admech, but I wish you’d open your mind to it a bit.

Like, if you HAD to include a Ratling then what mechanics would you like to see? If you cannot think of any then I’ll refer back to the point about lack of imagination.

I think there would certainly be some artistic licence over this. The ogryn scale in game looks a bit smaller compared to that model comparison, no? And for strength etc i think a pinch of salt could be applied as we have regular humans who kill a great deal of ogryns and sometimes up to 3k enemies a mission. It is a game and some allowances have to be made over the “realism" element. I think glass cannon could still be applicable if he used poison weapons etc. there are ways to design these things into fun mechanics.

Most of all I think a Ratling could bring a lot of fun.

Anyway I’ve given my suggestion for Ratling many times and you’ll no doubt reply again with an absolutist stance that it is completely inconceivable so we will have to agree to disagree on the wee cheeky rogues.
