New Player’s thoughts of the player base

So firstly, I know that I will catch a lot of grief for bring this up, but here we go. Why does no one know or care to play like a team? I currently have 52hrs into this game and I can count on one hand the number of times I have played with a team that wasn’t Speed Running bolt heads for the new class. I was in the military and I play so many different video games, but when I brought up that we needed to slow down because I wanted to find the Martyr Skull I got kicked, right after I was told to “hurry up.” by a teenager.

did I miss the whole point of this game, because all I feel like I am doing in this game is sprinting to keep up with some sweat trying to speed level his new Tech class. I’m getting dropped in a match because I cover the rear as we advance to keep the team from being swarmed and then boom, I’m down because the three Tech dudes are 100m away hip firing chain lighting.

I will have players actively step in front of my line of fire because they want the kill for their penance score, not to mention the overall selfishness of watching players take ammo for 2 rounds and I have shouted “I need ammo” line three times in a row.

If the answer to my grump here is “oh thats just little kids.” I not going to agree with that as I am a grown man and children should not be playing a game like this.

if the answer is “get good.” I’m not going to agree because these issues have nothing to do with my game play or my gaming skills.

I am just confused and a little grumpy that a game based on teamwork and resource gathering, no one wants to help one another or work together for a larger return.

what difficulty are we talking about?
cause up till auric maelstrom/mid havocs the only “use” other players provide is to get you out of a net or dog :man_shrugging:

every player holds the power to pretty much solo the content so its no wonder theres no incentive to watch out for something that aint of no/little benefit to you.

blame bad balancing for this, players get used to a faster pace over time cause whats the point in going slow through something you’ve been clearing a thousand times already?

as for the “specials”, twins hard mode/skulls and so on, ask before hitting ready in the hangar.

been so long I don’t even realize them to be a thing, you’re definitely late for the farming phase.

as for the speeding with the new class, most got a few classes beyond true lvl 1000 and want to get it over with asap, since for whatever reason fatshark doesnt want seasoned players to skip this boring process.

“hey i improved the hydrogen bomb 5x over but sure send me to kindergarden all over again” isnt something anyone would enjoy.

personally i duo’ed it “done quick” and it was boredom pretty much 99%.

then you should be fine, since you’ll have no issue staying at the top of the race and outpace them :man_shrugging:
is it a pleasant experience? maybe not, safest place to be though is getting stuff killed at the front where the action and the most competition is, chances are you’re getting picked up in case of a net rather than ignored at the back.

New class releases means a lot of people are coming back and a lot of people will be focusing on penances and such. Not much you can do about it, but over time people will be done with that and the game will settle back down. People will be more cooperative and there will be less rushing or kill stealing.

To a certain extent, you do have to keep the pace though, the game is nowadays designed to be faster like that and later on you can risk getting overwhelmed if you get bogged down in an exposed area. But that’s for later on.

Just give it time and until things settle down try to not let the current situation pain the whole picture of the game. Personally if I do see a newer player I do try to keep an eye on em just in case and if someone’s behind the group I do try to return and help em clear up the back. But that’s not always possible.

Quickplay is a power fantasy sandbox. Like those physics games on Steam where you setup mass horde and do things to make them fall over.

Don’t expect anyone to share ammo, medstation. Not much team play.

At the moment Quickplay isn’t scaled to 4 players. You could have people run in different independent path and directions in Auric/Maelstrom and not require any or much team work to finish.

Havoc has more teamwork but of course face delays in party finder, no match making and occasional vetting of your class build.

No surprise many asking for true offline solo with separate progression of penances, mastery, resources etc. As many don’t want to play with others and I’m seeing people probably exhibit that by pathing off to treat as solo. True Solo mod does exist but it’s like running missions and not earn any rewards.

It’s no different from other online games. People that don’t play objective in Battlefield and sit on a hill sniping, COD players sitting behind a door waiting for someone to walk past. To put their own desires first. Human nature.

Only games with real teamwork are hero shooters like Overwatch, Marvel Rivals. Actually Overwatch has way more team work for enforcing roles like tank, DPS, support so it’s very clear on role expectation and synergy.

As time goes by I am playing Darktide less as result and more Overwatch. Purely because of high team cooperation.

Darktide in Quickplay mode feels like everyone playing their own game.

I suggest when you feel ready and want to. Move into Havoc, more team play cooperation. Well to a certain degree.

It’s what you will get when playing public matches. People cannot rely on you, since likely in their last matches they had the most unreliable players who might’ve been huffing fumes whilst playing Auric Damnation; causing them to only want to be self reliant.

If you want to play the game as a group that works together and considers eachother before themselves, I’d highly recomend using the LFG here on the forums, or go to the Darktide Discord and seek out other players who will play that way with you.

Like all games, it’s better with friends. I wish you luck, it’s a fun game once you get the hang of it.

i think you’re mostly playing with people who have hundreds of hours in the game but are trying to level the new class as efficiently as possible. fatshark keeps forcing experienced players to do ti and unfortunately people defend it because “if you speedrun it, it doesn’t take much time at all, so stop whining” not understanding that this sucks for new players who want to learn on those difficulties.

Well fatshark is to blame for not providing old players with lvl 30 class at the start.
Also it’s not slow game, enemies go endlessly, you will waste time and resources on fending off hordes which inevitably will lead to being beaten after some special does his/her special stuff.

It doesn’t matter, bullets go through player models even if it looks like that they being hit, maps filled with tunnels and both skitarii and ogryn are extra large, so get used to shooting through them.

Get to havoc 30+ , it’s only the place with tamwork while in random you are basically solo player.

Great advice! Especially for a player with 52 hours in the game!

It is what it is, maybe he is talented, some people can do high pretty fast.

to be honest if you want to do a slow run because you want a skull then create a party for it. dont use quickplay to do something that could make the run take x2 as long. Consider that the other people in the party already have, dont care, or dont want to do the skull. Ask them if they want to do it and if they say no be an adult and move along, instead of making them wait.

thats on you buddy.

Players have been made too able to handle all situations individually. People don’t play with their team because they’re not forced to rely on them in any way.

Coherency regen has been completely power crept by the self sufficient options given by the talent tree.

You can easily build to deal with every armour type well on your own. Not even just “ok”, you can be very effective against every enemy type on your own.

If the game doesn’t properly incentivise, nay require cooperation for success, then people will always take the lazy, selfish option. Hence why Havoc is a very different vibe to the rest of the game.

First: “Point of the game” is questionable, we have so many players who see it from a different PoV and attidute, especially as the game ain’t new and new players really will have no chance to experience what earlier players where able to do. Some times ago people asked before a mission if all are having the “Martyr Skull” or People on Warren 6/19 asked to pause for the blue bottles, etx.

All those moments of support … I haven’t encountered anymore since the Arbiter came out…
And I feel really lucky that I have personal (RL ones) friends and a few In-Game ones I got through those. Mostly we communicate via Team-Chat options/external apps outside of Darktide/Steam…

But coming back to point of the game… there are just too many players and expectations of a run and seldomly you got ones who consider the baseline of any PvE game → If you work as a team, if you put your whole ambitions into a victory for each of your team members, if you acceot general gentlemen agreements (like those with corrupted wounds/are going to be really downed next are going first at the medicae, medicae in mortis is (with clutch exceptions) to be spared for wave 12, keep your med-stim ready for the scum that can’t use it, etc.).. and well, from time to time it just works and feels pretty smooth/good!

But then again, I am for instance one who see WH40k as a majorly ranged combat based system (even close combat (base non-assault units (and sometimes even those(imperial))) is mostly done by pistols) and people who are crying out Tide game:=Melee are mostly considering WHFB where that is true. You have those people who only see a win as a good run, instead most people I know consider a good run one that simply felt good and that doesn’t include a win. Final last stands are always a story to be told, whereas an easy peasy Victory is just… well, nothing to be remembered ;p

Been’ talking for far too long now → but to a new player nowadays, my advice can only be → find yourself a strike team that goes with your pace, learn/experience all the secrets (martyr skulls/twins hardmode/etc) without beeing spoilered (unless you want to be)! But pure randomness, especially on Quickplay is a toxic vortex that voids you from learning/experiencing/enjoying the game as it is(/was).

And if you do want to do the skulls or any other non-private penance: ask at level start and quit (via menu) if you don’t get any positiv feedback.

I play a fair chunk of Vermintide, have many more hours there than in Darktide . Although I encounter way more saltiness and toxicity on Vermintide, I think the more loose team orientation is because of the scale and variety of ranged weapons and ammo. It not only means that it’s much easier to play like Vermintide swiftbow waystalkers, but it’s also very easy to fall into that niche (term used generously considering the average VT Swiftbow waystalker).

I noticed this a while back, the more Vermintide I play, the better I get at Darktide, the more Darktide I play, the worse I get Vermintide and much of that comes from the overall lower team orientation. Players reactions to netted party members tends to be a big one, the recovery time (getting someone out of a net) is exceptionally quick, but unless you’ve playing with a Havok group, or a group that know what they’re doing* I’ve noticed a large number of players (even if they’re stood right next to a trapped team mate) will try to deal with everything else first. Obviously if the trapped team mate is getting flamed, bombed, or there’s a pack of crushers between them and you, running off to help them isn’t a good idea.*

*Not ignoring disablers, disrupters, pick ups, tagging immediate dangers or Demon Hosts, etc.

My incredibly, poorly made point here is I think you’re correct for the majority of Quickplay matches.

Quickplay, especially on Auric tend to be like marmite (love it or hate it and no in-betweens), they either go really well, or really badly. I’m sure we’ve all seen this kind of variety, it’s the difference between the Arbites player who tanks like they’re a Space marine in cataphractii terminator armour, and other Arbites player who eats every piece of ammo they find for spamming shotgun rounds into pox walkers and dies to generic mobs every time they’re forced to use melee.

Welcome to Darktide.. and many other co-op games on the market.

I am going to generalise here and I don’t care one bit about doing it because I have been through this a thousand times before. People nowadays simply like seeing themselves as the hero of the story. I have clocked in 2300 hours in this game, and I will say there is an overwhelming majority of players who simply want to blast through missions acting like a shinigami, and as soon as one gets to a point where one needs to do some actual somewhat coordinated teamplay - things get complicated. I am also going to add the fact that most of these main character guys usually wind up getting downed on the other side of the planet because they go astray and mess up at some point.

However, it is not frustrating to me anymore because I have to come to terms with the fact since there is no cure in sight as far as I can see. It is more amusing/fascinating to see how inapt people are at solving objectives and caring about cohesion.

I for one have done pretty much everything there is to do in this game at this point. However; I like helping out other players if they ask for help. Finding martyr’s skulls, doing penances or whatever it might be. Because to me, that gives me a new objective in the game: help others. As long as people communicate and are honest about their competence, I respect that and accommodate for it. That being said, I definitely feel I am in the minority when it comes to this approach.

Not saying I am a saint or anything. This is just common decency in my book. But that probably looks like acting like a saint for some others I guess.. do with it as you please. Cheers.

First and foremost at 52 hours of the game I wouldn’t make absolute statements like that. I doubt you played with even 0.5% of the playerbase so far, and likely a lot of those people were new players. Therefore, whatever other frustrations you suffered, they are tiny sample.

Its comments like this and several others I have noticed that are the reason for the post, I don’t care how many hours you have in the game. I don’t care the devs didn’t give you a class on a platter and you have to level a character. regardless is the fact still stands that the players screaming “we need a reason to be team players or else we are jerks by nature.” is absolute toss of a response and doesn’t help new players feel supported, I will actually correct myself. I do care how many hour you have in the game, because if you have 1000+ into the game and all you got for an answer is “I suffered and so will you, so shut up!” its clear that you are drippy griefy sweat that I mention above. don’t act all shocked because I called you a name, you’re being an elitist jerk, I’m over 30yrs and very easily can call you something worse. but thank you so much for being a contribution to my point!

clarification on something because you have been here long term, fine. pointing out stale dev support, fine. point out anything other than no constructive troll behavior because I am expressing disappoint in with adults for just silly behavior that can ruin someone else’s fun. yep, just a game. but take 3.5 secs to think of someone other than yourself and help someone have fun.

I’m also going to add here that I am by no means saying to walk through the map like is a spring day, you can move with a sense of urgency and still take time to look for stuff.

yep, I should not expect people to play like me. cool, but I do expect not to be kicked or screamed at because I nicely brought something up.

for those of you that explained things and offered advice or support on my post, thank you.

now that its clear the trolls have started bitting, I bid you farewell.

It will become better in a couple of months when the playerbase shrinks and people stop leveling the new class.

Brother, I hear you. I want you to know that. I had different expectations of the player base when I started too.

But I have asked so many times if people are new and want tips or need anything explained when playing on lower diffs and I am at best met with silence and at worst talked shite to. Not once in 1k hours have I seen anyone in this game try to give helpful advice in chat in a single match besides myself and I’ve been told to KMS for it on more than 1 occasion.

Sorry you’re not getting the coop experience you wanted from the rando players, but you shouldn’t keep hoping and holding your breath.

I know you didn’t want to hear “skill issue” as a response to your concern, and this isn’t truly that a-hole response, just tangential: as you progress, if you make it to Aurics, you’ll find more a pleasant experience there because that’s the last QP difficulty for quality, long-time players to easily meet in, so people are typically more willing to play as a team and generally more friendly, though 99% of the time chat is silent and “ggs” are exchanged in the end.

I wish DT was a game with your picture of co-op, but I gotta tell you honestly that it just isn’t. Not your fault, not mine, it’s just the game now. So you have a decision to make about if that’s a killer for you or you can try to endure and reach that likely improved situation in Auric.

Something I have noticed when these threads pop up is that people don’t seem to have a clear definition of “rushing” and “speedrunning” and therefore some people of who in my oppinion is doing niether might get defensive because they have been accused by overly slow teammates in game of doing both when really they are just as you say “moving with a sense of urgency”.
