Musing about 'Darktide Killers' and why they didn't work for me

These days I play mostly play HD2 and Darktide for multiplayer.

Gave up on Remnant 2 with their RNG update.

Other than those it’s mostly single player games.

HD2 and Darktide are both pretty different from one another and what I play largely depends on who’s online.

Darktide the only penances I have left to do are enemy kills and 20 weeks of Havoc chests opened. HD2 I have everything unlocked. Again. So I just play with mates. They don’t quite compete for me.

Yeah but the gist of the comment is DT is never going to beat SM2 numbers because you’re not any of the 40k things.

You have to pay a premium to maybe look like a 40k thing, but you’ll never be the 40k thing. Game’s gonna call you a reject whether you’re dressed like a commissar, Krieger, or discount male soritas.

The game doesn’t really call you a reject to your face as soon as your character hits level 30. Heck, even Morrow defends you against noble observers, although that is way more against them than being with us. Too bad there is no player character arc or story after 30 though.

We’re all still hoping the future narrative actually addresses this

but the characters themselves dont break the 4th wall and the universe takes itself serious, huge difference for me.

its a world where if i’d wake up in today, for whatever short life expectancy, my jaw would be agape in the most positive of awes and the most evil grin on my face :smiling_imp:

my old BF5 scoreboard had me around 0.6% of medics and an overall top 5%K/D while shouldering a full time job.
THAT was stress and i quit playing after a year cause ego demanded a linear increase of my K/D each match.
i wouldnt quit playing for that day until the numbers werent “right” :smiling_imp:

as for the reflexes contra tactics, exactly my points as well to a degree.

i love quake/hated counterstrike, for all the same reasons.
aim, reflexes, twitch decisions is where i judge my physical value at and try to maintain being in my mid 40s.

plus to a point it makes you autonomous and lets skill differences shine, for example you can carry 3 peeps through a darktide match and feel great cause you are the superior player, al the while wading through hordes of enemies pulling off inhumananly good reflexes.

though i’m no expert for hd2, the “solo” matches i’ve watched were rather static with kiting from one big explosion to the next and avoiding many confrontations.

different “skills” but in the same vain i prefer bare knuckle brawls to say pancration (that palm strike stuff) i like it “raw” :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

so yeah, i’m thankful to still have a measuring tool for me when quake isnt the place for me anymore without copious amounts of amphetamin :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

havent played for ages but around 2020 or so there’s been a good combat revamp mod if i remember correctly.
might wanna search the nexus for it.

Most would be Darktide killers (If something is to kill DT, it will be FS, but I don’t fear on that front) don’t really fit me cause none are neither melee or at the very least close ranged minded.

But there is also another side, Fatshark is not fast, nor are they perfect, but they’re nerds, and they have a base view that they want to apply and that vision is very much aligned to what I want from a tide game.

Sure there are things that they’ve done in the various tide games that I’m not the most fan of (Weaves, Havocs, Necromancer, a couple of weapons…), but there is always stuff that I want to continue on, and things that I’m hopeful for (Chaos Waste, dual wielded weapons, new enemies in the current factions…).

If another company started to make games with a well fleshed out melee system, and with such well made art, sure I would also play it, but it would also not make me leave DT.

Only case where I would be inclined on not playing DT would be if FS release a new tide game. And hopefully they don’t do 40k and maybe even not tied to GW

In terms of fluid movement and pace I would still play Apex Legends and Overwatch. Actually not Apex anymore, it is a complete mess at the moment. But Overwatch is a good experience due to fact that people don’t care about kills - They want to win as a team. Deep Rock Galactic escort duty is also fun team mechanic.

Just feels very rare to see that sort of thing in games now. Team above stats.

Same for me.
I used to fence, and discovered that VT2 actually scratches my “want to sword-fight” itch. DT isn’t quite as good for that - because block isn’t as useful? - but it’s still far better than anything else I’ve tried.

I generally prefer turn-based strategy games over shooters, but I’ve poured thousands of hours into VT2 and DT. For the last several years, they’ve been pretty much the only non-TBS games I play. I keep coming back, trying different weapons and builds, trying to get a bit better.

I can see the argument for HD2 being more tactical. But I don’t find it nearly tactical enough to be interesting as a tactical game.

SM1/2 are non-starters for me: I might get past the 3rd person POV, but not the err, “arcadey” combat.

I had a lot of fun with Deep Rock Galactic before I gave VT2 a second try. As a coop game it has a LOT going for it, but I don’t find the combat nearly as engaging as VT/DTs.

Did Fatshark have guys who did fighting games? Because it honestly feels a little like that in terms of complex weapon behavior.

I will not shake hands with a man who thinks having to hit a nid warrior 12 times out of a dozen nid warriors with a power sword constitutes as fun.

Darktide doesn’t need other games to kill it, its been doing a great job on its own.

Kingdom Come Deliverence 2 has recently emerged as the actual Darktide “killer” for me (it’s just a break y’all).

I’m at the moment 52 hours in and have barely completed any missions outside of the tutorial.

I’ve spent hours smithing weapons and horseshoes, competing in archery tournaments, and assisting hunters in removing poachers from their territories.

I’m obsessed with the game!

If I ever make it to the wedding in KCD2, my next game will most likely be Obsidian-s [Avowed] (if/when it gets on sale).

SM2
Reasons why I have not played it:

  1. I am not a warhammer 40k fan
  2. it feels like a game that is here just to make money
  3. Sounds like the gameplay is not for me

HD2, reasons why I don’t play it:

  1. Game is awesome… but there is no melee. All is about shooting
  2. Walking simulator
  3. Less stress in HD2… you die, you reappear…
However, I loved the universe, the parody universe, the guns… really this game is extraordinary.

However, I have never felt the same than what I can feel in Darktide when playing a mission…

  1. There are various melee weapons available now. Darktide’s lead combat developer began working at Arrowhead some time ago, and while melee in HD2 is not as extensive (or good) as it is in Darktide, it does exist.

  2. HD2 has vehicles, including a fast-moving buggy with a mounted turret.

Regarding Space Marine 2, of course they want money.
Companies need money to operate, pay employees, and so on.

Our world revolves around money.

If the government paid everyone a livable community salary every month, 99% of the world’s population would quit their jobs.

We work because we have to, and those who work because they enjoy their jobs make up a small percentage of the population, with the majority of individuals working to survive every month.

The problem with Space Marine 2 is that I’m not a huge fan of the Astartes, despite the fact that they are the poster boys of 40k, and the gameplay grew old quickly for me plus I’m not a fan of the rather limited looks of the Astartes models in comparison to what you can pull off with a human soldier/Hiver/Psyker/whatever.

I mean with the state of “AAA” gaming and titles released. Makes Darktide shine even brighter.

“X game killer” only works if the game is sufficiently similar in moment to moment gameplay. Casuals will play the “killer” for the same amount of time they played the original then move on to the next squirrel that runs past their field of view.

Non-casuals will find X game is different enough on some fundamental level and either like it more and stay there or don’t and go back to the original.

I.E. DRG vs HD2 is a more valid comparison (sort of), SM2 and Darktide is not.
