Mortis Trials is fun but...Undercooked and Bit Disappointing Sadly

TLDR: Disappointing but has potential. basically needs to be more like Chaos Wastes. Make use of Havoc game mode but put the roguelike in there.

Longer Read Below:

It is a bit disappointing…I guess I could blame myself as I had high expectations for them to follow through what chaos wastes does best…having our characters go through a set of missions with choosing paths…then find coins around the map and strategize whether to save it for a Shop after missions to buy the buffs or just buy it on the shrines WE FIND in the missions themselves. there is a certain thrill and reward for doing that but in here you just earn the buffs in every wave without much struggle.

Also the idea for certain buffs to be available once you choose through a certain archetype that influences the results of other buffs given is terrible. I’d rather just have the pool of random buffs given for me.

the available buffs too are limiting in its variety. besides it complementing the archetypes, there’s only ones complementing the talents you have, and well blitzes/grenades. I was hoping more of them would synergize with our weapons, like you get an additional blessing for your Ranged/Melee weapon, or a special one. (stuff like Chain Lightning or Crtits Heal you)

The difficulty is also pretty unbalanced to OUR side. we are TOO OP. rarely do I encounter a squad wipe even with multi bosses on our asses. I miss the bosses with modifiers on them. or level modifiers. they could mix up auric and havoc modifiers here to kick our asses.

On a More Positive Note

This doesnt mean its all downer here. this game mode has SO MUCH POTENTIAL. maybe it can follow how it did with Havoc reusing the levels but putting in the mortis trials game mode in there instead. make us buy those buffs instead with the ingame coins (pilgrim coins) we get during our runs. have us choose like a shop after like 2 or 3 runs to buy a set of buffs for ourselves or for the team. then at the end of the run that will be the Mortis Trials wave 12 we know now.

Now Heres a Question for You

Any thoughts? what changes you guys like to add or remove? is the arena/horde mode good enough or do you want a more campaign based mortis trials?

It’s a snooze fest, but then maybe it is intended a game mode for casual players, in which case that is absolutely fine.

It is not the VT2’s Chaos Wastes for sure.

the fact it can get boring is whats disappointing. they should just combine Havoc and Mortis Trials into one here. make it way harder

it feels like a tech demo for chaos wastes and i hope it is

thats what I hope too. there is lots of potential but lets hope they go through with it

Yep! It’s targeted toward more casual players who might not want to sweat through Havoc. That’s why it’s available from Trust Level 13 instead of 30.

That said, we’re still cooking! I’ve been collecting lots and lots of feedback since last week and sharing it back with the team. o7

Thank you to everyone for the feedback!

when creating a new game mode, there is absolutely no need to tailor it to a specific group of players.
simply designing a mode that can be enjoyed by both beginners and advanced players alike is enough.

for example, the current Motis Trial features five difficulty levels, just like the standard maps, but the Damnation difficulty clearly feels more like Malice level.
damnation is meant for advanced players, so by adding a difficulty above it (such as Auric) to accommodate the top few percent of players, everyone can have fun.

why not make it enjoyable for all?

Im glad you are listening but yeah changes take time and it’ll go a long way before we see a proper Mortis Trials satisfied both the Devs and Us. I cant wait to see it get harder and add more Buffs soon. At this point it may very well be a good replacement for Havoc down the line seeing as how thats not received well.

this sort of design is odd because you guys do have a difficulty select. you could just scale it so some difficulties are casual and some are fun and challenging. making the whole mode casual even if I pick the highest difficulty is just completely wasting the concept for me. making a gamemode for just one part of the playerbase is lame.
here’s the thought: the casual players who dont want to sweat dont pick the highest difficulty and you make the highest difficulty fun for sweating. something for everyone. you don’t have to funnel everyone who doesn’t want a baby game into havoc which, despite being at the core challenging and fun, is frankly a horrible gamemode all around due to the rank system and how the assignments work.

like seriously when did we stop thinking of a difficulty select as a difficulty select? if you want something for casual players they can already just turn the difficulty down. I just dont get it

Is it edible tho is the question

It feels like a tutorial mode to train newbs to stay in coherency, and learn to block dodge.

When the devs decided to make higher difficulties give more rewards. VT2 they made a change so all difficulties gave the same exp, and only the higher difficulties giving better loot when you needed it after getting to a high (or max) level, and even cata was there for a challenge difficulty but gave the same loot as legend. Furthermore, chaos wastes was good for grinding because it was good exp and loot and didn’t require you to have good gear at all.

well they did change in VT2 so that Difficulty actually matters when getting XP

I do hope they can implement it in the way that Havoc reuses maps. but this time its just mortis trials with increasing auric modifiers and that in those maps we hoard coins or a currency to buy Buffs from certain shops or shrines along the map. I feel thats more thrilling than just standing around in a single map waiting for the horde to come to you.

This is the most boring game mode.

Weird, it was changed for a long time then changed back. Still, it encourages players to move up difficulties even when they aren’t ready.
