Memory leak (suspected)

Issue Type (Required):

Crash - During Play

Issue Description (Required):

The game crashes 1 to 3 timess during a mission and always crashes on mission completion. I have verified integrity of game files several times, uninstalled and reinstalled the game and reinstalled the GPU drivers (AMD). I use Special K to handle HDR and have disabled it and it made no difference. This issue started after the latest patch. I have also used MemTest64 to test my RAM and they work just fine according to those tests.

[PC] Do You Use Mods? (Optional):

Thanks for reporting, we’re looking in to this!

Special K still appears to be active as one of your crashes is occurring inside SpecialK64.dll - make sure it’s disabled in its entirety and please see if the crashes continue.

I uninstalled Special K and got some brand new crashes. The first happened on opening the game through Steam

I’ve raised this one to our database as I think it needs to be looked in to properly!

I understand you’ve reinstalled Darktide already. Try clearing your AppData instead, but using this method:

Step 1: Disable Steam Cloud Saving

If Steam Cloud saving is enabled for Darktide, this may automatically restore the AppData and consequently cause the issue to resurface.

  1. Navigate to your Steam library
  2. Right-click Darktide
  3. Select ‘Properties’
  4. On the ‘General’ tab, scroll down to ‘Steam Cloud’
  5. Disable ‘Keep game saves in the Steam Cloud for Warhammer 40,000: Darktide’

Step 2: Delete AppData

NOTE: By deleting your AppData, custom keybindings will be reset. You may wish to make a back-up of the directory in the event deleting your AppData does not work to resolve the issue.

  1. Press the Windows key + R
  2. Enter %appdata% within the search input and select ‘OK’
  3. Navigate to: AppData\Roaming\Fatshark
  4. Delete the entire ‘Darktide’ directory

Step 3: Verify Integrity of Game Files

You will then need to use the ‘Verify Integrity of Game Files’ option, which is accessible via the Steam client and will ensure the installation is complete.

  1. Right-click Darktide in your Steam library sidebar
  2. Select ‘Properties’
  3. Select the ‘Local Files’ tab
  4. Select the ‘Verify Integrity of Game Files’ button
  5. When complete, close and reopen Steam

I think I figured it out. It’s the Game Bar overlay causing the issues. I removed it in Powershell and the crashes have gone for now AND I gained 30 FPS.

This is a really unusual crash, how often has this occurred since your post here?

The game crashes all the time, yesterday I had 8 crashes. The most common crashes are out of memory errors which occur at random, but almost always when I quit the game through the menu or when a match ends. The computer is just fine when the crashes happen and I can start the game again or do something else. It’s three or four different kinds of crashes I experience. [Engine Error]: Access violation (0xc0000005) is the most common.

I also ran Dism.exe /Online /Cleanup-Image /Restorehealth in CMD prompt as admin and ran the Windows Memory Diagnostic Tool which didn’t return any errors. I have verified the integrity of the game files through steam multiple times but I haven’t tried deleting AppData yet.

Deleting AppData doesn’t help.

The other common error. If i focus the game and not the dialog box I can still play as normal with full control of my character except when the cursor enters the boundary of the dialogue box.

[Engine Error]: There should be no munmap operation in HeapAllocator ‘lua_heap’

At D:\a\d\rel_engine_darktide\release\2025_02_19_Patch1.7.x\runtime\foundation\memory\heap_allocator.cpp:150 in function stingray::HeapAllocator::munmap

Why is Darktide allocating memory usage via munmap on my storage drive that doesn’t have any files associated with Darktide when I’m runnning the game on a Windows 11 pc with C:/ as my main drive that has never had any Linux distro installed on it? Do I have to wipe my system and reinstall my OS? Throw me a bone here, I’m extremely frustrated and need to bring the Emperors justice to the foul heretics of Tertium.

I’ve been informed that SpecialK still appears to be enabled, it’s worth looking in to!
