Markus de Mandelot - A Blog Post by Lohner

Expecially since WoM proved that these awesome ideas might very well be completely removed from what we like to see, and by the time they reach that certainty it’ll be too late to do something else.
Heck, WoM was presented to us as the holy grail of Vermintide, and it’s got mostly negative reviews to this day! (and that’s from the ppl who even cared to buy it).

See Bogenhafen new armour skins. Community went absolutely bonkers over a fairly vague comment by Hedge that people interpreted as written in stone new skins.

The way the community has reacted in the past is the reason FS are reticent with any posts, and I don’t blame them.

I’m commenting to say:

Yes, very much. Just liking isn’t enough, methinks.

I have a lot of questions i don’t even ask because i know you can’t give me the answer to, some may slip through the net though.

Is there maybe a way to talk to Geedubs, meaning FS asking them, if some more raw cuts of stuff could be shown? I really don’t know how lenient they are and i guess they are really strict, but i also know that their community team is ramping up recently ( since about 2-3 years ago), reacting more to what the fanbase is saying, more interaction with the fanbase in general.
Could this be somehow translated to Vermintide? Maybe ask your your friends at Creative Assembly how they do it, because they are allowed to show stuff with the tag ‘shows development in progress’.
I may be stretching it a bit here, but have you asked GW to give you more freedom in showing what you are developing or do you just accept what they’re dictating?

Hedge did sort of prove his point that if someone official at FS comments, it derails the thread lol.

I dont get this one.
What I get is that you at FS are really not very good at presenting stuff. The last stream, which “revealed” the Grail Knight, was a mess. You could see the CEOs annoyance and stress level rising by every minute until he just seemed to overflow and not answer any questions anymore.
There is a lot of people really into VT2. Next time you might want to release the Trailer with some gameplay footage, receive questions and do the stream about those questions afterwards. This way your CEO doesnt need to develop a migraine when he has to handle 1k people spamming chat. This also shows in your weekly announcements. Instead of giving sneak peeks and hints, or even screenshots on the ongoing development of the new career you basically walz it into us and rather fill the announcement before that with how nice the new hats will be. I mean… yeah… okay… if there is nothing else. But there obviously was something else.

Back to the “cool stuff”. There has to be some kind of process behind this stuff, one most people would be delighted to be informed about. If it gets scrapped for whatever reason, just tell us “well, it didnt work out at all, because the engine didnt want to play the way we wanted” or whatever happened “, and instead we are working on this now.”. If we see that there is something cool coming and we are allowed to discuss about it everyone will be pleased about that experience.

This, ofcourse, isnt only true for coming content, but also bugs and other problems. A simple “we looked into it and dont have the time to fix it right now”, or “we are aware and working on it” will actually make people think someone at FS cares. If there are roadblocks or other sudden occurrences, comment about it, or fit them into the announcement/news.

If you, as a NEW User, enter the Forum it will look like its a void place of some Fans chatting with each other, not like a platform devs, and community managers will take a look at and get inspirations from, or whatever. They wont have the instinct to search for Hedges account and read through the discussions he had with forum members.

I was actually really annoyed at the stream. There was ALOT of information about random stuff. Like Deeds getting looked at, lots of hats coming to the emporium with the Grail Knights release, actual new outfits are being developed, a BBB happens sometime this summer and probably more stuff I couldnt pick up. THIS is the stuff worthy of an announcement, every single one of those. If you can talk about it on stream, I am sure you can just do a post about this stuff and answer basic questions. “We dont know yet.”, or “We are not that far into development to answer that.” are also legit answers.

(Since Iam at it, I kind of was especially agitated that there is still not a single comment of any FS person on the huge work which was the Rebalance mod. This thing was and is a love letter to VT2 and a cry for an ear and it seemed like no one gave a fart. A simple “Hey. We looked into your work and thank you for your time and inspiration. We are not ready talking about details right now, but we are thinking about rebalancing Weapons in the coming months.”, would have been a bloody great sign that you actually appreciate the work and it wasnt just a huge waste of time. If you really want to use the Forum for “Inspiration and Feedback” than some getting in touch would be nice.)

It really sucks that the best way to get hints or clues about Fatshark’s thought process behind why they do things or what is upcoming is to scour through Hedge’s post history here, Reddit, Steam forums… what a pain.

BUT LET’S GET BACK TO MARKUS DE MANDELOT. BECAUSE IT IS A FREAKIN’ NOVICE GRAIL KNIGHT.

Because it’s power level will be looked at a lot. I fear that it could be a bit underpowered to prevent thoses sorts of accusations of “p2w”.

This discussion will be inevitable anyway. And on top of it, there will be 5 classes someday that need to be balanced accordingly with every change to the game, so even if you avoid that discussion now, it can always come back…

Not publicly, but we did reach out to a balance dev on the mod, He said he would take a look when they begin planning a rebalance of weapons, but a weapon rebalance is still so far out that there aren’t any solid plans yet.

How does grail knight seem underpowered?
All we know is his active ability which seems to be a delete button on the same cd as fk i would say? In terms of dmg i think it could compete as boss dps ult aswell. Has passives on taking tomes and stuff, which are nice, i wouldn’t say these are very strong in particular, the 10dmg red on tomes is basically a fk aura with a bit less dmg red but which seems like unlimited aura? i feel like they should of put dmg red on the grims quest, but cdr is on grims i think? So its a difficult choice. We don’t know anything on his talents yet, and those could have benefits to his ult usage, give further bonusses on how many passives active, etc.
His ultimate does seem a bit blinding but that was probably because i was watching and will probably not be like that ingame.

He may ship a bit over or underpowered, it’s hard to fully determine until it gets in to the hands of the masses. At which point we will be sure to adjust quite quickly to get him in to the right spot. We have had some closed testing of the Grail Knight with a team of testers so we’re not sending out untested content, but we’ll have to see

Things can become more aparent when you get thousands of players playing something, as opposed to smaller test groups.

I understand if you don’t wanna answer this, WoM private discord flashbacks.

But was there a way to get into the closed testing? Or was it internally tested by a fatshark team?

We didn’t open up a ‘test application’ for this. We hand picked a selection of players from all walks of life, and asked them to try out the Grail Knight and give feedback on both how we might package it up for players, and what it feels like to play. This is pretty normal for any game development, so it shouldn’t come as a surprise, hopefully, that ‘Game Dev asks some players to test content’.

What we learned from WOM was that we should test with time to react to feedback, and we should avoid some kind of super-secret-test-group-within-a-larger-test-group type thing.

I understand that it’s normal for a new piece on content, was wondering if maybe i missed a signup somewhere, glad to know i didn’t.

Thanks for answering.

As long as they ask for and take into consideration the opinion and arguments of people in disagreement with the mod, then it will be okay.

I cannot like this enough. Being opposed to the direction or intent of the weapon balance mod either gets you scorned or ignored.

I hope GK really is balanced quickly if he’s a bit broken. BW was broken and the quick fix wasn’t at all quick.

That’s not even true. Everyone that gave feedback on the mod, either positive or negative, didn’t get ignored, or scorned. Or do you mean that they didn’t implement everyone’s ideas and suggestions? Which would be impossible, if you meant that, nothing is actually stopping anyone from posting their own version of a mod and ask feedback on it.

And trust me, fatshark literally takes everyone into consideration, why i also think bw was left how she was for so long.

Why? Do you know something we don’t?

Yes

Then it would be probably wiser to keep it to yourself than rubbing other’s nose into it.
