Interview with Fatshark design lead (Swedish article, paywall, screenshots + translation)

@jackjackson " he is satisfied with the response that “Darktide” has received"

means they hare happy with the whales spending a sh*t ton of money to buy every cosmetic, no need to change anything if the game is making money

Absolutely. It only takes a fraction of users spending money to make the game profitable.

Say the game sold 100.000 copies @ 40 bucks, which equals 4.000.000 revenue.
In contrast you only need 10.000 people spending 400 bucks to make the same amount as sales. And given how rabid some people buy EVERY skin they see this is entirely possible.

Depending on your operational costs you could probably drive a hefty profit with a few thousand people spening 50-100 bucks a month. I mean at 5.000 people spending 100 bucks a month they’d make 12.5% of their full game sale each month.

There’s a reason the MTX cosmetic rollout is weekly and always on point lol.

There’s a reason F2P games make a lot more money than games P2P games do. People have no issues spending $20-$30 every month because they are micro, so keep it alive for 3 months and your base has spent more money than they should have if the game “just” costs to buy.

At this moment, Fatshark should either pause the game entirely, admit that the launch was a catastrophe, refund the people who want a refund, and then just focus 100% of their time to fix everything. Or do what Hello Games did, complete radio silence and just release EVERYTHING for free. Pump out content at a very high rate. But this is Fatshark, they will ignore the criticism like they always do, add things into the game that people hate (just look at the reception for Winds of Magic, it’s still mostly negative), and try to save their reputation with the NEXT game. Fatshark deserves no praise, they have a massive debt to pay for their launches and updates. They REALLY need new management in their company, they clearly have skilled people working there, but their management is just ridiculous.

At this point they’ve no reputation left to speak of imo. I sincerely hope that the few competent people they have leave the studio and fill the ‘tide’-game niche or some small studio with the same mindset as say Supergiant Games (They way they handled early access with monthly updates based on community feedback should be taught to every gamedev learning the craft imo) takes on the genre.

Only thing I basically have left to say to anyone at FS:

Half a percent of users crashing my ass. Has anyone playing this game not had it crash? If you could not fix the game crashing constantly before the release (and a month plus after), you should not have released the game! This game should be early access. What clowns.

So Victor Magnuson is the guy to shame for the game’s “design intent” as he is the “design manager”.
Obviously a very delusional person, but at this point it is merely a confirmation.

So Victor, if you read this, get off your high horse, please. The game could be a thousand times better.

I’ve only ever had a single server disconnect since the game came out, not a single crash or other strange bugs (ok, a friend got rammed through the floor by a mutant once, that was fun).
There’s a bias on the forums because only people who have problems come here to talk about them and look for answers, the rest is silently playing.

You are lucky then.

I think that’s an understatement considering he’s pleased with a 48% positive review scoring on steam.

Even when drunk I consider less than 50% kinda bad.

Kinda boilerplate interview nonsense. Obviously he isn’t going to do anything but take a victory lap, and the purpose of the cross promotion is to increase sales so the interviewer isn’t going to ask anything of substance. Hence the crashing being ‘addressed’ but actually minimized, some people crash on mission start up every game. They wait until years later for clickbait negative articles doing something resembling journalism when the wind is blowing that way if they’re ever going to be critical at all.

The real thing to be critical of is the community manager’s ‘communication’ that amounts to ‘the developers are still working on the game’. Very concise and confident knowledge being articulated there. It may as well be a shaman reading bones. ‘Great game maker have good thing planned’.

i doubt that 10% of players are whales more like 2% but if you think about the people who bought 1-2 skins for the careers they really like figure might as well look like that.

I don’t mind laying money at the altar of MTX when the supreme emperor Gabe gets his cut. I don’t think I can engage with the DT store on that principle, sorry Hedge

They are listening as Cathrine the Great listened to the woes of her plebs.

Gonna see in the next couple of weeks if we get bread, or get told to eat cake.

Hah I get that reference

imagine being a artist or lvl-designer for this project, pulling of this amazing 40k scope, being exited for the release and all, just to see your design manager drive the car into the wall, and then be like “yea everyone loves it, i couldn’t be happier” in an interview.

dunno about you but i would be disgusted

Is it Fat Shark? You disregarded all the good feedback and goodwill people had by repeatedly ignoring it or deliberately moving against it. I’m back from a three week-ish ban for “baiting staff” and it’s good to see that FS just keep on doubling down on their mistakes.

Game has been uninstalled for that time and seeing that the steam charts have been consistently dropping it looks like loads of people have binned this “live service” game. Paying those streamers to play the game and thinking you know better than your enthusiastic playerbase definitely helped.

I’m just going to assume you missed your own deadline of full crafting over December because what else should be expected at this point?

It is possible that payday2 will not even get surpassed by payday3, theres a rooted community of monogame boomers that replay it infinitely, got to meet some of them, its like they fell in a hole and don’t wanna come back.
Perhaps playing payday2 brings them back to a slice of time where life was good or almost good, gotta also remember it is toaster friendly while as darktide is a big hardware filter, not everyone that ran vermintide will run darktide.
theres a lot of factors that escape you if you just look at the chart and locate big number small number.

It’s just sad and infuriating since all the rest is simply amazing.
There are some balance issues but otherwise the core of the game is extrememy enjoyable, just being held down by all the surrounding systems just sabotaging everything.

This is my favorite part and also why you can safely ignore the whole article as it is clearly just another compilation of marketing phrases and lies.
