Good afternoon all.
I’m looking for help in building my veteran talents, as if I were playing a squad-shooter. Grenades and ammo-efficiency being the most important.
Thank you.
Good afternoon all.

Here you go.
Mk3 Hellbore with Surgical practically always crits. Grenades are frags and regen. Chainsword can pick off most targets and whittle down crushers with the special.
EDIT: If you can’t grab a Hellbore/armor penetrator, this can also work with a reasonably precise weapon and krak grenades.
For a generalist build that’s not dedicated to any one weapon type and is particularly focused on the logistical end of things, something like this as a starting point is probably what you’re looking for.
Gets you enhanced goodies from ammo/medi packs, survivalist for ammo regen, 25% extra ammo, VoC for uptime, etc. If you want a 3rd grenade, drop a couple points somewhere, or if you’re running a lasgun and want the “no ammo on crit node” that’s a fairly easy one to pick up by shifting a node, obviously nothing in this is set in stone. FT is in there for a keystone, but that could be one of the things to drop, I don’t think investing super deeply into keystones for this concept is super helpful.
Edit: Ragnaroks build above is similar, another good example. Broadly speaking you’re gonna go “middle left middle left/middle” down the tree picking up Survivalist, VoC, Always Prepared, and whatever else to taste.
Here’s my meta Veteran build that ticks all the boxes you’re looking for. It’s a great all-rounder with lots of ranged damage potential, tears up elites like nobody’s business, shuts down gunners easy, and you really get to FEEL like a guardsman with your trusty hittin’ spoon by your side.
Compared to @Molonious’s build, i think Shredder Frags are overall better, as the crowd control they provide is invaluable, and you’ll be able to handle heavily armored targets fine with your Columnus in hand. I also think Catch a Breath
is superior to Get Back in the Fight!
, as it provides a means of passive Toughness regen when solo, and helps with the occasional stray bullet.
If you’d like to use the plasma gun instead, drop Onslaught
for the crit chance node to the right of Toughness DR above Voice of Command. 5% is A LOT. Keep Their Heads Down!
helps with Gunner suppression a lot, it can give your team some much-needed breathing room.
If you want to use a different single-fire weapon instead (like the ADS revolver), you should take Deadshot
instead of that 5% crit chance node. There’s no reason to ever alt-fire the plasma gun, but ADS with the revolver should be muscle memory. I’d also recommend dropping Duck and Dive
for the Target Down!
addon for FT, and the stamina regen delay can still be taken next to Superiority Complex
. I’d also swap out a Toughness curio for another Stamina curio - maybe even both Toughness curios. Stamina is super duper important, especially when one of your talents is draining it!
I don’t really like the temporary bonuses you get from popping active ability - they last too short for me to enjoy, especially For the Emperor!
, and I’ve found I don’t really need them.
@CobaltNinja Why the columus over the agripinaa? That seems a loss in damage and horde cleave.
You’ll get a better return on investment by just forgoing the keystones entirely. @Mayson pointed that out to me months ago and I’ve never looked back; he could advise you better than I could though.
Columnus puts down a lot of bullets. Its DPS outshines… well, probably any other weapon over 2 seconds; and I’d say tops anything thereafter (and the reload is mega quick). *edit On reflection, that doesn’t satisfy your ammo efficiency criteria, but running out of ammo is a rare thing unless you hit the no-ammo modifier special missions.
The railgun RayGun Gauss Gun Tau Rifle Plasma Rifle maybe does more DPS on reflection, but the Columnus lets you hit a few small targets without feeling you’re just wasting ammo.
I have fun with this build. It’s a bit more in-your-face than some of the stealth builds. And I find a bit tankier too. I really like the Focus Target keystone. But then I spot a lot of targets, 'cos I’m a team player.
Its DPS is absolutely massive, the tooltip lies. Buy one and try it out for yourself!
EDIT: Though Agripinaa will also serve fine - some top level players I know actually prefer it to the Columnus.
Heh. Now I’ve seen your build, I’m going to try that instead for a bit. That’s given me another week on DT! They weren’t too dissimilar, but I’m wasting space with ranged abilities in the top left.
WRT keystones - yeah, Vet keystones are pretty mediocre overall and not needed, and if you wanted to, you could drop Bring it Down!
and Focus Target
without too much of a DPS loss to grab Trench Fighter Drill instead along with a nice +25 max toughness - but in my experiences, TFD isn’t really needed on the shovel. While other melees like the knives and catachan swords benefit greatly from attack speed and finesse bonuses, the shovels are fine as is - especially the folding ones.
