I think that the decreased ammo modifier is cool. However, it being mandatory means that a certain playstyle is forced across the board, pigeonholing people into certain loadouts. That doesn’t sound very exciting. It would be better to make decreased ammo pickups one of 4 possible modifiers to the mission, like the Blight Spreads of Pus-hardened Skin
I don’t think it’d actually change a lot. As it stands the only ranged weapons with much effectivity on Havoc 40 are already either extremely ammo efficient and can get by with -75% (like the heavy stubber, recon las, bolt pistol or plasma gun to name a few) or they’re already extremely OP and only held back by the ammo limitation (like the flamer)
I don’t disagree that ranged weps get railroaded very hard, I’m only thinking it’s not because of the ammo reduction though. I think the far more limiting aspect to ranged weapons is that those with bad breakpoints get extra cucked by the HP changes, and also that even if you did bring a gunlugger Ogryn into havocs with a twin linked stubber, you probably wouldn’t actually cleave those massive dense hard hordes very well with it, nor would you actually gain the ability to shoot shooters since the limiting factor here is how they destroy you in a split second and you get very little to no facetime.
Just to substantiate this argument, a veteran with survivalist probably generates far more ammo on havoc missions for his team than the -75% takes away, and I’m guessing that the average ammo gained in a H40 is actually higher than in an auric maelstrom due to the elite density and the focus on staying in coherency because of that. I already don’t run out of ammo with a vet, but I still don’t feel compelled to use any different ranged weps. I think realistically it’d just let zealots deploy the flamer more, cementing that meta more. To play devils avocado for myself though, I might be underestimating certain autogun builds with ranged immunity here.
Hardened Skin and the added HP are shrinking the gun pool way more than reducing ammo pickups. (Which is fine.)
You either want a gun that can hurt enemies through the buff, e.g. anything that applies DoTs, or cleave through enough targets so it doesnt matter that you need a fistful of bullets for a single one.
Without the Harden modifier, you can bring whatever you feel like. Just follow the standard Rule of not shooting anything you could chop to bits.
