Hahahahaha! *Swagger*? Really? Jesus wept all over Gaia Online's roleplaying forums

Oh boy! Guys we get to play a game with Swagger, the NPC your Dungeon Master puts into the game because they only ran a game for you so they could imagine how cool their self-insert is!

Swagger. For real now. Are we gonna learn how cool and non-chalant he is? Is he unique because he has a mysterious past? Oh look, he has a hood and a mask on because of how badass he is

It’s like “Hey guys, can I join your roleplaying guild here on the World of Warcraft RP servers? I can’t play unless I finish my homework first but he’s a Blood Elf Hunter named Swagger because of his mysterious past

Is he gonna teleport right behind us to let us know how cool he is? I mean I know he won’t because he’s just gonna follow us on the other side of some conveniently parallel yet disconnected and unseen hallways except for a few catwalks he’ll refuse to leave.

Swagger. For the love of god. Is his name secretly Wartin Mahlund? Is he gonna run around with a Radium rifle for kicks? What about including any of the other like half a dozen characters we barely get to interact with? It would be dope to have Melk, Rannick, Zola, Morrow, anybody we have a pre-existing relationship with, giving us covering fire or any kind of support but instead we get stuck babysitting Swagger.

"Hi guys! Thanks for letting me join your game, I know Mom made you guys include me because she’s going out and you have to babysit.

Anyways, I rolled a high elf rogue with a mysterious past and he’s sneakier and cooler than everyone else and doesn’t care about anybody. His name is Swagger and I immediately roll to seduce the barmaid."

Swagger. Christ.

Withholding judgement until I hear some voice lines. Could just be one of those subversions where he ends up acting nothing like an edgelord. I mean Cayde 6 with no context outside a screenshot kind of looks edgy too.

Hell, they could double down on the edge factor and it could still be great if other characters give him “straight man” reactions to anything he says.

Whoever wrote this character has this for their phone background. Probably.

I’m withholding my opinion as well but I do think The Edge is funny.

Plus if it turns out the reason it took so long is Martin Wahlund spent inordinate amounts of dev time on perfecting his OC donut steel I will actually die laughing.

Teleports behind you
- Nothing personal, kid.

Bonus points, if he leads us into a trap.

Nobody knows where he came from! (we have inserted a new character and do not want to write a back story)
look man i’m pretty sure if some mysterious dude turned up who refused to show his face or identify himself, they would probably be shot by our team mistaking him for a heretic before he can unzip his katana

When 40k has such wonderful well thought out examples of the Big Angry guy being called Angron, The Raven Guard having Corvus Corax (literally the scientific name for a raven), Ferrus Manus which means Iron Hand being the primarch of the Iron Hands who has Metal Hands whose faction symbol is a big iron hand and his ship is called the fist of Iron, the Dark Angels and Lion el johnson just being taken from a poem, and at one point had a character named Obiwan Sherlock Clouesseau and i’m sure there are plenty more examples of similar names, then I think complaining about character names being a bit silly and not too serious is just a bit strange.

With Our Spiritual Liege as the credited Lead Writer for this game, I suspect that’s the more likely source than any C-Suite self-inserting for overused edgy trope characters.

Difference being that all those characters, despite their superficially silly names, are all unique, multifaceted and well written. Do you think “Swagger” will have a story as well developed as Angron, for instance?

They just forgot to change his placeholder name, because they were so busy with itemization… right?

The complaint being made here isn’t about how in-depth a character he’s going to be. Nothing was said about that.

It’s his name, appearance and presumed demeanor based on those 2 aspects.

It’s about how compelling of a character he will be, which in essence is the same thing. You could say that we can’t know yet and that’d be fair, but it’d be naive to act like this initial impression is one of an interesting and thoughtfully conceived character and not just a quick hosh posh of tired, edgy tropes.

The main post here is complaining about the name primarily, just look at how many times it’s mentioned and how much emphasis in put on it. It’s complaining about it not being a serious, realistic character name and what that implies about them.

Right, and? The name and the nature of the character go hand in hand, do they not? Especially with a name like “Swagger”, which doesn’t exactly imply an ambiguous archetype.

Not sure what you’re actually taking an issue with here.

bruh seriously did someone on GW sign off on “swagger”?

Anyway, posting in an epic thread. Well done @TheyMikeBeGiants
