Gungryn Buffs Needed

Gungryn does not have good enough ammo economy to be viable. You’re either constantly out of ammo or stealing every ammo pickup you can get your grubby little fingers on. Point Blank Barrage consumes a ton of ammo you are already short on and becomes useless when out of ammo, not to mention the longest cooldown in the game. The two most suitable gungryn class fantasy weapons, ripper guns and twin stubbers, are consistently rated among the worst ranged weapons in the game. I would buff these weapons and give the ogryn better ammo economy, but how is the question. How would you buff Gungryn?

I would buff it to the Moon, by removing it from the game. There is no place real place for dedicated ranged classes in the game without breaking it’s difficulty. This has been proven in the past by the veteran (before Survivalist nerfs) and PBB ogryn (before fire stacks nerfs). It’s still true for staff psyker (fire stacks got nerfed, meanwhile Soublaze stacks got buffed ) and the new contender Desperado Hive Scum. If you want to know what would happen to game difficulty if PBB had “better” ammo economy just look at Desperado Hive Scum.

Gold Toughness and +60% Strength during Gaze ought to do it. VoC Shout each time upon reaching 100% Peril during Warp Unbound.

Ogryn needs a berserker mode that either augments his melee or ranged capabilities based on upgrade nodes.

The TL Stubbers definitely need a better ammo economy. I can deal with them taking forever to brace and bring into action, I can deal with them being unable to hit the broad side of a barn at even medium distances, but does it really need to absorb all the ammo to do its thing?

Ripper guns honestly I’ve always gotten more use out of Can Opener and the alt-attack than I ever do from shooting the damn thing, though I genuinely do find them very useful for that. Unless you’re basically in bayonet distance already, it just doesn’t feel like it hurts much. In tabletop by contrast, at close range the Ogryn’s Ripper gun hits as hard as a pair of Heavy Bolters do, a single (one, uno, 1) Ogryn unloading on a Space Marine unit up close is inflicting as many casualties as an entire platoon of 25 lasgun-wielding, rapid-firing, guardsmen are.

Twin-Linked Heavy Stubbers need more Ammo and/or more Damage at this point, and I say this as someone who mains Achlys TLHS whenever playing Ogryn on Auric. TLHS just aren’t EFFICIENT enough and this leads to them RELYING on BLO, kind Teammates and Staff Psykers. There’s also the whole firing delay issue but that doesn’t impact me as much as its poor Ammo economy, personally.

I personally think Ripper Guns should have more of a “circular” Pellet Spread comparable to that of Combat Shotguns and, to a lesser extent, Mk VIII Exterminator Shotgun.

At the moment, firing them feels like you’re peppering Enemies with birdshot through a duckbill choke and not in any way that feels good. Giving Ripper Guns a more “circular” Pellet Spread would make them PUNCH through a horde instead whilst increasing their proficiency against Elites/Specialists. This theoretical iteration of Ripper Guns would sit between Kickback and Heavy Stubbers, being the close-to-mid range anti-horde, anti-Elite/Specialist, staggering WOMBO COMBO an Ogryn-sized Shotgun ought to be.

Interestingly I know someone on Discord that absolutely loves MkV Ripper gun since launch and is extremely good at killing & sniping specials with it using weapon swapping to control how many shots they fire and cancel the accuracy penalty which also effectively increases your fire rate.

What’s wrong with Desperado Hive Scum?

Why not both more damage, and more ammo? Also you’d think with a round that large theyd have some kind of rending. Maybe a blessing that stacks brittleness would be nice.

Ripper guns have good blessings but they are hard to control. I think the amount of recoil they have now would be fine if they did more damage.

As for point blank barrage have it refill a quarter of your ammo or something on use.

Oh, I’m absolutely down for them meeting in the middle there. I didn’t mean to come off as suggesting either or as a mutually exclusive thing, that’s my bad.

Literally just 5% more Rending is enough to get them over that line, to be honest. I wouldn’t want Fatshark to give them TOO MUCH power against Carapace, though. There’s a significantly greater issue to be looked into regarding all of that messy stuff.

I’d be happy with PBB taking a leaf from Desperado’s book and giving you a free Magazine for the duration of the Ability, provided its Cooldown remains at a lengthy 80 Seconds. This would directly benefit specific Weapons more than others, but those others don’t exactly need that help anyway.

Make em shoot HARDER

Excellent post. I fully agree they need to look at the actual mechanics involved with the gameplay instead of buffing numbers.

What happened to all that stuff in the lore about Ogryn gunluggers going on a rampage by swinging their guns when out of ammo? Now that’d make a great mechanic but we’re somehow discussing giving them more ammo instead of playing into the fantasy. It’s with balance issues like this where the limited development scope of Darktide becomes apparent. Unfortunately I think they’d never rework any talent or skill unless that rework is slight numbers tweaks.

Yeah, hipfire. The thing can shoot the wings off a butterfly at 100m if you stop moving for like 0.2s and hipfire. Your single digit IQ goes into some sort of quick draw mode. Use one of the crosshair mod remaps with a dot in the middle. The hipfire is extremely accurate regardless but for those sniper foreheads at 100m you’ll want to be still before shooting.

Among plenty of other buffs they need… Ammo Stash should be +100% ammo, and give some sort of bonus ammo within coherency for pickups.

Got a brain bursta right here boss

My word how I would love powerful weapon bashes on Ogryn! Can opener is one thing, but madly swinging around a gun and having it be effective would be dreamy.

The blessings hint towards this being a playstyle but they all seem a lil poxy and weak to me…
