Exploring the Benefits of Crouching in Ranged Weapon Usage

It would be cool if by crouching, you could get a slight stability and/or precision depending each weapon you use. Would add more variety in gameplay/playstyle and adding some mechanic to the game that can benefit a player by doing so.

I feel like crouching it is never used. (obviously CTRL button it is used a lot to slide dodge)

but my point it is that crouching itself has no meaningful benefit, if not the one of trying to cover behind certain objects. even though experienced players will just keep dodging/slide dodge instead of covering behind obstacles, also because not very safe due to their hitboxes.

it could be also useful for ranged weapons marks that are barely used due to their spread/recoil and lack of precision/stability, where if crouching may slightly improve stability and precision, trying to maximize the effectiveness of weapons. I feel like it would make sense, and could be a cool small addition to the gameplay.

Totally agree on this proposition.

True, you don’t see a lot of crouching. Added stability/precision would make total sense.

I actually do most of my crouching when I want to allow ranged players behind me to target enemies in front of me.

if people actually go for it and it´s their playstyle, sure why not.
don´t see a downside in someone going prone when he was about to be stationary anyways.

only thing in my mind is why be stationary in the first place when every encounter can be dominated more easily keeping a brisk pace and outmaneuvering the enemy (cluster of gunner, kiting ragers, not getting boxed by bulwarks etc.etc)

personal preference here, but darktide is what quake was and why i love the flow of combat.
fast 180° flickshots while dodging around the enemy like an eel.

interestingly for me since a buddy of mine dropped darktide explicitely for not being “tactical” enough, felt uncomfortable up close as a vet and was hoping for some rear sniping.

thing is, best player around wouldn´t be much of a help in my book just doing that instead of shaping the engagement at hand head on.

so much more you can do with repositioning alone i.e take a sniper laser of a dude that´s about to rezz dude"2".

also much is happening around a corner, pillar etc so i need to constantly switch position anyways.
again, not my cup of tea to shoot from afar, but apart from the consignment yard ending i can´t remember a large open area right now you´re in for a “longer” period of time.

smelter complex ending would be blocked by the seperate areas/stairs/etc. even carnival arena you got boxes and railings blocking your shots downwards, even more so going prone.

but thats just me being ogryn and jumping into heretics faces first chance i get.
people wanna crouch… let em crouch

yes, speaking you as main zealot, so i understand you very well.
i just think it would be simply a small addition that rewards certain playstyles / making some weapons good with some slight stability and/or precision/reduction recoil due to crouching.

but in the end it wouldn’t really change anything to your current playstyle, if not adding a new addition that slightly make you more precise and/or stable, that could come handy in certain situation, where you may need for extra precision far away or simply even at short range tbh just for the extra precision, and a reward by crouching if doing so, adding more “in-depth” mechanics.

obviously it won’t change much anyway, because for how i think, it will be a small slight increase so that you don’t really have to spam crouch just to get the best out of it everytime, but just only situational, a thing that exist just to provide a benefit in doing so.

for example, with a bolter, it would make sense to me, if you would gain slightly some stability/precision/less recoil, because when crouched, supposedly, holding the bolter way more comfortablty than when standing. Making the bolter less janky with recoil if crouching, due to the weight distributed well when crouched. IRL too i’d crouch with a bolter to shoot more comfortably cause a stance that should give you some stability at least. :smiling_imp:
(i know it may some sort of other problem due to how animation works but still)
but seems like if you either stand still or crouch, does not make any difference, which was something i was thinking, with such addition, could make darktide more interesting from that point of view, balance permitting, but i don’t think would be anything crazy.

another thing is, people dumping all mag of bolter when standing still/moving
and i wonder what if people were just crouching to get some slight increase in stability/less recoil, i think it would make gameplay more variant and people trying new ways to approach to the game. even on paper seems may be a buff, i think it woulnd’t be that crazy anyway. also because people would still play as they always did. it is just to have an interesting addition.

i usually crouch when dumping bolter mag to plague ogryn head, to be more precise because of certain angle.

also another thing, i know helbore lasgun it is so precise already, but i have seen many times people just crouching for the “cool factor” i know some talents gives you stacks when crouching, but wish there was something more about this. and also peeking to walls/objets etc, which seems to be a veteran thing only xD

the tutorial tells you to crouch behind cover. but reality is, a shorter avatar = being hit less, sometimes, especially more-so when crouching. there’s been some times when my massive ogryn or tall as possible zealot, they still get hit even if crouching and behind obstacles, with a gunner for example, i’ve experienced this…
and my short as possible little psyker, he’s a little thing that slides and crouches and doesn’t get hit as much, sometimes…!
this choice of height comes with pros/cons, that’s why it was added the character modifier, to be able to change height = that wasn’t in the early versions, and i re-made my soldier a few times, same with my ogryn = initially i made max height ogryn, but my friend complained i was in the way too much so i re-made a short as possible ogryn haha…
but i use cover all the time, crouching etc… but yeh alot of people just dodge instead.

I crouch when situation allowes me to:
(1) not surrounded
(2) Ranged enemy far away

Don’t care if game gives buffs to it or not. I belive it does and that enough for me.

I hadn’t thought about it, but I realised I do this for mid range shooters from muscle memory! Even if it doesn’t do anything, I think I just default to crouch ads a lot of the time.

Probably a thing I learned in early cs days that’s just stuck with me.
