Enemies consider carapace, flak or both?

In looking at perks would flak work against enemies with both carapace and flak? Do you need to hit the flak portion for it to work? I am trying to decide on rolling either the plus damage to carapace or flak armor on a weapon.

My understanding of Carapace Armored Enemies with locations of said armor. Feel free to correct.

  • Crusher: all body parts
  • Scab Mailer: Head
  • Bulwark: Arms and legs
  • Reaper: Arms and legs

Damage bonus applies to the type of armor you hit, so yeah, a perk with +Flak damage would work on the Flak parts of a Mauler.

And your list is almost correct, but it’s actually more “detailed” than that, as for example only the armored parts of a Reaper’s arms are considered Carapace. You can still hit their upper arms and get Unyielding feedback.
You can test those things out in the Meat Grinder, in fact. Also it appears that Reaper leg armor isn’t properly counted as Carapace, so it’s not always accurate to the model.

Depends where you hit (same goes with some ennemies unarmored with just a helmet considered as flak)

But mind you, if your weapon is not good against carapace (like lasgun for example) don’t bother with the +25% « carapace damage », it will remain bad against it. Be careful on what weapon you apply the perks on!

But on a weapon like combat axe MKV for example, perks flaks / carapace / unyielding are king

just to say that he’s right
I did that to test the +12% on second and third shot blessing on a Revolver and as you can see it does, but because i one hitted 3 times two different parts of the Reaper you can see the difference in damage, because that said Revolver has +15% against Flak armor

here’s a link to all enemies and there armor with body parts

Unaimable attacks (like surge lightning) will hit enemies in their torso, except for Brain Burst which hits them in the head.

Thanks all! I am trying to figure out best perks to use on ogryn grenadir gauntlet.
