Deflector vs sniper, was killed.?

Okay, I haven’t had nuch chance to find this out, but today on a maelstrom a sniper was taking aim at my teammate, I had my sword out and my ult (shield) on cooldown, and I stepped in front of him and blocked. (deflector 3) “this weapon blocks both melee and ranged attacks and in addition block cost is reduced 27.5%”

And was shot dead.

Are sniper attacks not ‘ranged’?

Seems it’s confirmed to ‘not be a bug.’

Yeah, it’s working as FS intends. It’s a very powerful shot, I guess is their reasoning.

I definitely don’t think we should be able to just completely trivialize snipers with Deflector, but blocking SOME of the damage so that you’re not just outright annihilated would be nice.

Nah this is actually a bug and you can totally block the shot, but kinetic deflection breaks it and lifts the check it is supposed to do on just sniper shots. Run stamina and more block cost reduction, it can be done…but kinetic breaks it, and instead of fixing that they just say ‘its working as intended’.

I wasn’t running kinetic deflection… but I might have needed more stamina. How much do you need vs sniper?

Truth is deflector actually kinda sucks.

A lot of Psyker’s stuff kinda sucks, or it’s insanely op and then gets nerfed until it sucks.

Seems like if it doesn’t trivialize autoguns, it should trivialize a sniper. I mean, it should give you an up on someone to bring it, and sniper is single shot instead of a full mag hose.

Basically, you have time to get to cover if you bring it, and that’s about it. Seems like one shot off a sniper should be something you should take, maybe with a broken block, and then move before he recharges.

But that’s Fat Shark these days it seems. Game has gotten better but I wish they would stop being weird to psyker.

It’s one of 5 attack types that can pierce / overpower Deflector:

  1. Crusher / Mauler / Plague Ogryn overhead attacks
  2. Hound Pounce
  3. Mutie / Beast of Nurgle Grab
  4. Sniper gunshot
  5. Trapper projectile

It’s absolutely fair. Snipers take forever to line up their shot. If you don’t dodge that, the punishment should hurt. Not to forget that running / sliding into cover still is an option, even with the Blaze Sword out.

Deflector + Kinetic Deflection talent and just a bit of extra block efficiency and stamina means you can literally hold block and WALK DIRECTLY AT GUNNER PLATOONS.

I have done this when my team lacks a Zealot with a spine.

I said it’d be nice. But I also said trivializing snipers (more so than the bubble already does) shouldn’t be the goal.

I agree, getting laid out by a round from a sniper is expected (when not dodged).

Psykers are far and away the squishiest class, tiny mistakes aren’t tiny with them. Sometimes, you’re stuck with the situation where the block is the only viable thing left. Like panic dodging Crushers depleting your dodges and being left with the sniper bead on your forehead.

As others have said there are attacks Deflector or even Kinetic Deflection can’t block. The melee attacks that Kinetic Deflection can’t block can be parried with Devil’s Claw swords however. All games have exceptions and considering how powerful the sniper shot is and how easy it is to dodge, it makes every sense imo that it’s unblockable by anything but the oggy Shield on special mode.

As for the commentary that Deflector on Force Swords sucks, I see that a lot and I’m of the firm opinion that it goes roughly like this:

  • When you’re relatively new, Deflector is amazing
  • When you have a bit more experience, it seems like a crutch especially since Duelling Sword IV exists
  • When you are extremely experienced, it’s amazing again

The main issue there is that while Force Swords have a ton of nice blessings making for some interesting and quirky builds, only two really rise above all the rest especially on Deimos: Deflector and Uncanny Strike. Aside from extremely specialized builds, Deimos virtually always brings more value than Duelling Sword IV. Mainly because its 2:nd heavy can easily be comboed into from lights, pushes or push attacks, and is stronger than DSIV heavies on top of staggering / knocking down every non-boss enemy in the game. Meanwhile it also brings that Deflector along with the Force Sword’s ultra wide and deep push, and that fantastic push attack with a 9m range that always counts as a weakspot hit letting it proc things like True Aim and that Uncanny Strike, on top of knocking down everything aside from muties.

Deflector seems like a noob trap when you can handle positioning, yes. But it also lets you play uniquely aggressively and not just survive but thrive in situations you otherwise couldn’t. It’s not just about protecting against ranged dmg, blocking also prevents ranged from staggering you, which means you can always count on being able to dodge, slide and reposition no matter what.

Can you give me your exact stats/build? I’d love to try it.

It’s probably garbage because I suck at Psyker, but walking at gunners is indeed possible-- long distance? Not so much but enough to save your ass or get you in range to suppress/knock them over.

The build itself is largely irrelevant as it comes down to deflector (I have a t3), kinetic deflection & the additional block efficiencies with a bit of extra stamina. I’d much rather have a stamina curio, but I can’t seem to roll a decent +3 stam; this is what I’ve got so I’m workin’ with 'em.

The real bug is deflector actually not having block cost reduction.

Says it does a thing, does not do what it says on the tin? In a Fatshark game? “Immeasurably Complex” mechanics
