Darktide 101: Voice Over Recording & Rules - Dev Blog

pray be to baby emperor!

But what about the vacuum capsules??? When do we get to do a dev q&a? I want to know about those levers on the Mourningstar 0=

I was debating on making a male Savant Psyker because one of his capsule call outs is him screaming it. Literal perfection. But the ability to say ‘if you like’ (yes on comma rose) and then cryonic rod as the Seers is too funny to not use, imo. ‘If you like cryonic rod’. And getting caught in the rain.

Ahhhhh I love this, and I just want more!

More of all of it! I’d love to see in-studio footage. I’d love to hear about the tooling y’all use to manage these insanely huge audio libraries and test VO rules. I’d love more statistics on the most- and least-frequent bonding conversations (that’d be a good video/short). All of it!

The amount of work that has gone into the VO, and the systems around the VO, seems simply massive and is so unique. Thanks for sharing!

I can already imagine what happens when the person acting knows nothing about 40k and gets into the recording booth in the studio.

Tests are good.
Now take the script on page one.

So this story is set in space, far in the future.

But you’re actually in a gothic cathedral.

BOB
Ok first line.

ALICE
“For the master!!”

BOB
Say it as if you just saw a giant slug monster puke all over your friend.

ALICE
… uh-huh

Wow. That is staggeringly low haha.

Makes me want to know, if I’ve heard it.

Something I would love to see with VOs is enemy and player banter. It is pretty non-existent while there is a lot of potential for the characters to react to eachother.

Zealots having shouting matches with ragers
Veterans telling snipers that their aim is horrid
Ogryns and bulwarks having deep, philisophical debates on hive politics

It wouldn’t be as complex as player to player conversations, but it would make the game feel so much more alive.

StrawHat! Oi! StrawHat! What are requirements for Shipmistress and Zola conversation that triggers all Rejects and Acolytes on Mouring Star to scream “For the Emperor”?

+1

I loved seeing the UB5 team doing their voice lines!

I like this idea. Just quick little shouts back and forth that relate to each other:

Z: “Quail Heretic!!!”
Scab: “I aint scared of your false god Zealot”
Z: “You will be when I gut you…”

(idk, Im not a VO writer )

Best voice lines in the game are all the maniacal laughter psykers do when using venting shriek. I can only imagine some of them were doing ridiculous poses in the booth.

Oi, oi! I went and chased down a dev for this:

That one is one out of /41 potential starters for the shipmistress vox announcements in the hub.

In the hub, a vox announcement will happen about every 100 seconds, and each character has an internal cooldown on these announcements of 240 seconds.

Each time a new hub server is rolled up, the shipmistress will eventually go through all her 41 lines. A very rough estimate is that she likely speaks about every 10 minutes on average.

If we assume this, this line will likely play once in about every 7 hour window of a hub servers lifetime.

After this point the bucket of the 41 starter lines loops over again, so theoretically if this line was the last line the first time, and the first line the second time, you could get the exchange twice in a row albeit extremely unlikely and at least 240 seconds apart.

Cheers :slightly_smiling_face:

Oh, he ded.

So… Is it tiring to hide wings underneath clothes everyday?

I wonder exactly how many more lines are being recorded or if there are more voice actors being hired.

Also, “they fly now” has basically become the Star Wars’ version of “Press F to pay respects”

I’d love to hear about the ability to launch a private match with no one else in the lobby. It would allow you to play with just bots like we can in Vermintide 2 and every other horde shooter/slasher. We can call it “solo mode” or something.

For Dev Blogs:

  • (Weapon) VFX and animations team
  • Weapon attack move sets and variations
  • Narrative writers (Though I guess they are in part from GW and not natively Sharks)

There is also a thing I would love to hear about and it’s those dev jam you lot apparently do every so often, to mention what the devs have managed to make work (even if it’s not to be implemented in the game or anything.)

These are great, thank you! We’ve got some other ones cooking up and I can see which devs might be able to tackle these topics mentioned. o7

Adding onto this, weapon balancing. I’m curious what the stats are for most used variants, and what criteria the team uses to tweak a weapon. How bad, or infrequently used does a weapon need to be before the devs step in? Also curious if there’s any one trick ponies with niche/outclassed weapons that have caught the devs eyes, assuming they can see those stats.

I’d love to see a deep dive on effects/atmospheric audio. Weapon, movement, attack, background noises are all really well done and I’d be overjoyed to see some of the details on how those are made.
(Also, I love finding out behind-the-scenes things like how, say, some eldritch beast’s cry is actually a pitch-shifted recording of someone crumpling tinfoil in a drainage pipe or some such.)

Video from VO recording sessions or little interviews with the actors/actresses on which lines were their favorites would also be fantastic.
