Community Feedback: What do you think about the Powersword?

@Radina.Shevu,

It’s real easy to cast aspersions and tell others to just adjust when the one saying it is sitting in a position they prefer.

You don’t have to agree with my view, in point of fact, I say multiple times in my comments that I don’t expect people to, and frequently prefaced my positions by saying that it was my view. But that does beg the question why you’re so quick to jump to namecalling when the discussion had been a civil one. There’s no call to be rude.

You’re aware that FS have data right?

It’s never a good sign if half the playerbase runs one special weapon, no matter the game. It normally shows that this weapon is too powerful in general.

Also there is pretty much a standard, we just can’t see it. It’s the balancing that makes the game actually playable. We’ve waveclear-weapons against hordes of enemies or anti-armor against armor of course.
Games wouldn’t work without such metrics, or atleast wouldn’t be interesting enough for more than a couple of hours unless we talk about skill-based PvP games.

I mean just try this view…

Imagine you run a weapon which is way less fun to you, because you’ve to deal with some drawbacks and just can’t kill enemies that effective as you can do it with the Powersword specials. I mean that’s pretty mich what poeple seem to fear since the nerf.
But hey you’re still able to kill stuff and ti engage with the gameplay. Maybe you’ll even get better, because you’ve to deal with new circumstances, even if you seem to have less fun than before.

And now… imagine there is another player wielding a broken weapon. You see those enemies, you run straight up to slay through them, maybe scream on your headset, and suddenly they’re gone, because that guy with the broken weapon dealt with them in 3 seconds.
In such moments you don’t have any sort of fun coming from the gameplay, no matter which weapon you wield. If you’re lucky you can maybe kill the last 3 adds standing, but that’s it. And you don’t have to be some elitist or so to encounter those moments.

I’m sure you can get behind it and it’ll happen. Some poeple might prefer a free win over anything else, but not everyone does.

That’s pretty much the core-reason why balancing exists and so many work and effort is put into it at any game. Balance keeps games interesting to play as long as the games offer enough content and variety in its core. Noone wants to deal with useless stuff, but also broken stuff will trivialize encounters.

And just a question about your decrease of fun. I’m just wondering, but have you expected to play the Powersword only for dunno… the next 1000h or so?
I mean, the game offers dozens of other weapons and there might be only one other being as powerful as the PS.

I really don’t know how to explain this… it’s just like a lot of players seem to count everything but the PS as unfun. So what’s the point in long terms if the PS would get its old strength back? Wouldn’t you want to try something different? Wouldn’t you get bored of it?

@Darth_Angeal

There’s a lot here, so I hope you won’t mind if I respond in increments.

I suppose in answer to your direct question first:

I hesitate to answer it because I’m sure it will reflect poorly on me and show how boring I am, but it’s a honest question, so I’ll give it an honest answer.

But yeah, I’d stuck with pretty much the same weapons build, playing either Malice or Heresy in pretty much the same way just because I found a build and playstyle that I enjoyed. And it’s funny that you say 1000 hours, since my actual time logged on Steam is 937.9 hours.

But yeah, I was content with that. And the reason for it was just Darktide has always been what I do to unwind after work. I didn’t really have higher aspirations than that. Would that have continued indefinitely? No, probably not. But I honestly had just been enjoying it in that iteration of it.

Does that answer your question or did I overlook anything?

Forgive me, I’m quite tired.

PS - Thank you for your cordiality. I appreciate not having a conversation devolve into an argument just because we happen to have different opinions.

Ofc it does and i know it by myself to put dozens of hours into a game with just one build i enjoy.

It’s just that there is bunch of stuff you actually miss out and may enjoy aswell.
I’m not trying to devalue your opinion, it just might be worth a look and trying out other stuff might bring a lot of enjoyment aswell and it would automatically make sure to have more fun-options available if you might get bored or another patch changes stuff.

A lot of “might be” i know… but i’m sure everyone will find enjoyment in more than just one weapon available.

May I ask you a few questions? And please, this isn’t meant to sound derogatory, but do you have Power Cycler and, whether or not you do, how did the nerfs this past patch invalidate the playstyle you’ve come to love? I apologise if you’ve already answered this, but there’s a lot of text to read through up there…

I understand that the Power Sword gave Veteran a relatively simple way to be powerful in melee without requiring advanced technical skills and game knowledge or specific blessing combinations, and I think that’s perfectly fine. However, even with the downside of poor mobility, the 5+ swings you got with Power Cycler could easily output more damage in melee than any other weapon in the game and would generally kill everything in front of you before that lack of mobility became a problem.

Now, I say that with the caveat that I never got to play that iteration of the Power Sword with Power Cycler myself, but today I was lucky enough to finally come across this in Melk’s shop:

And, I’ve finally had the opportunity to try out both Power Cycler in it’s current state and the MK VI. Overall, it still felt and played like the Power Sword of old (if anything, much better than my unoptimized one pre-nerf).

On everything up to and including regular damnation it was more than capable of taking the fight to the heretics without landing myself in any real danger. On High Intensity Damnation, it performed just as well with a coherent team that worked together, but you could easily find yourself left behind and in trouble when put on the defensive, sometimes unable to cope with staying mobile while dealing with large numbers of enemies.

However, on High Intensity Shock Troop Gauntlet Damnation, the weapon started to really struggle. Mind you, I paired it with another slow weapon in the Boltgun (which I was also trying out for the first time on Veteran; I prefer it as a Zealot weapon), but the constant reactivations and lack of mobility made it quite difficult to adapt to the rapidly changing situations you find in that difficulty.

Overall, this seems pretty acceptable. It was definitely still one of the strongest weapons in the game, but it did have some pretty impactful downsides when it matters most. It still gives new players a strong entry weapon into the class while not being a total crutch or get of of jail free card in the most hectic, dangerous situations.

That is… except this is only true with Power Cycler. And we’ve already discussed how inaccessible that is to new players. As I’ve also discussed, the weapon can still be quite strong with other blessing combinations, but those too take time and resources to obtain. So, there needs to be some readjustment here.

However @Yuma310 , you have considerably more time and experience with the class and the sword than I do. Surely you at least have a moderately strong one built. Even having less experience than you, I still managed to be very effective with the sword at all difficulties with or without Power Cycler without drastically altering the way I played with the weapon before the patch.

Again, I don’t mean to sound derogatory. I just want to better understand why you are unable to enjoy the weapon anymore. Perhaps we can come to a better solution if more people can understand your point of view more precisely.

I’m not sure if this was brought up before, but as you were brave enough to admit you prefer similarity over variety, please consider this. While your preference is absolutely fine, I’d be willing to bet the majority of the player base feels the opposite. Imagine a game where every run is predictable; exactly the same as last time. What would keep people coming back?

In this game we already have:

  • A very small mission pool using maps with recycled assets.
  • Only four player classes with limited build variety.
  • A lack of interesting challenges to work towards, although special conditions being more frequent lately has helped with this a bit.

One thing the game does have is a moderately large weapon pool, most of which have a unique enough identity to fill a different role on the team. Now imagine if almost every game you play, people are using the same few weapons. For someone like me, who’s constantly cycling classes and weapons, this actually ruins my enjoyment of the game.

Balance in repetitive PvE games like this IS important because it provides more variety when playing with random people. Different loadouts and team compositions lead to a different feeling experience each time you jump in to play, which in turn keeps people like me coming back for more. I hope this helps you understand our point of view.

I will try to answer the question. I had not PC before the patch. Tbh, I was not using this weapon cause it is a too powerful weapon. If you compare with a combat axe, the PS is really above it in all terms.

A PS with PC is yet the more powerful weapon you can find.

That’s exactly that. And before the patch, the PS without PC was already too strong.
Tbh, I think the nerf has been done considering PC and so they wanted to make a PS with PC equivalent to a PS without it prior of the patch.

The problem of the PS without PC is the lack of fun. With PC, the weapon is terribly powerful…
