It has been confirmed that in the upcoming itemization rework/update that locks will be removed. Stay tuned as more info is released.

the next “real” update, not hotfix, will change it for the better.
not completely free of choice right of the bat, but as far as i understood kinda linear progress, integrated into gameplay.

We won, but I will judge when I actually have a chance to interact with the new system. I simply don’t trust the Fatshark designers with progression systems, which don’t rob you of your sense of progression.
