Arbitrator is helpless against monsters

A forum search turned up these as most likely to be at fault:

  1. The sweats

  2. FOMO

  3. Chinese players

  4. The never-nerfers

  5. Games Workshop.

It might also be a skill issue.

You know I dont even think that is true. I just think people dont spam the dog pounce and instead allow the dog to just chill on targets. the 6+ bleeds and shock per leap adds up if you constantly cancel the pounce into another leap on new targets over and over. you get so incredible dps out of it and lone wolf by that same measure has never out-done me in any scoreboard so I still believe that lone wolf isnt as good. you just have to micro manage the dog more but the dog is extremely valuable even in high levels. would you like a small AI companion who can ignore the entire havoc 40 horde and pounce a dog off your teamate who is out of position that you cant get past? yes please.

Honestly to me, it seems that most folks still have a mindset of a few options (i’ve written a lot in each of those boxes, I just don’t wanna pollute the thread too much :joy:):

A) Cast their minds back to Arbi launch when we just got the Ogryn rework and the other 3 classes at the time were still to receive their reworks that we now have.

Summary

Which is also when the Dog was heinously broken with the max stacks of bleed, brittleness, electrocute etc., instantly applying to all targets, the dog bomb applying that kark to everyone in range, all those things hitting through full captain shields instantly, and the puncture blessing applying too, etc., with all that stuff giving rise to the “doggy can solo h40” meme that still gets mentioned now somehow.

B) Only think of the incredibly obvious standout OP stuff.

Summary

Arbi Shock Maul, Arbi Shotgun, Castigator’s Stance, Shock mines, True Grit, Lone Wolf + Shock mines, etc. In the case of those 2 weapons specifically, they’re so ridiculously strong at base and have such good blessings available to them that you can effectively ignore the need to synergise talents on the tree, giving you so many other free points to put wherever you want, which more often than not would mean you’d put them into the defensive passives, which then proceeds to feed that feedback loop of “the class is so strong and does so much damage”; Take a single OP weapon on a build → put the 3 ish points that would go into the melee passives in the bottom right into defensive stats instead → prevalent well known low-skill build which means now you can deal bigger numbers while taking bigger numbers. That doesn’t even touch on the fact that Castigator’s as a whole has so much utility for the price of a single point when it comes to this build’s mindset.

C) A combination of A & B.

Summary

People immediately think of how busted it was way back when, especially before the other classes most recent reworks (option A), which is then combined with finding a Castigator’s Stance + Arbi Shock Maul + Arbi SG + Shock mine build in a pug Auric run which seems to just slot itself right in the middle of the scoreboard without any discernible effort to the other players; they just kinda do mid most of the time with seemingly little input.

Because of that, people tend to look past/ “forget” how little effort was also required to do mid-to-well on the scoreboard on specific setups of certain classes like Shout+Shredder Vet, Purg Psyker, Smyker, Rumbler Ogryn, Post-rework-pre-nerf Batter+Bully Ogryn, etc. They were all around at the same time too, but I guess they were somewhat overshadowed because of the new DLC class being, at the very minimum, at least on par with the new standard brought by the hot & fresh Ogryn rework and the power that gave people who previously couldn’t even touch our favourite Pal, allowing for even more people to reach the higher difficulties in the way FS was gearing to balance them; a trend that still of course, continues to this day. Not only that, but you can’t exactly fit a Shout Vet into a Full 4 Cop Squad :joy:

Outside of that, I think one of the main things is still that there’s a couple of well, unnecessary talent placements? Biggest one that sticks out to me is the fact that in order to consistently regenerate toughness outside of combat by taking “Walk it Off”, you’re forced to also pick the +5% Toughness on Close Kill talent, which is one of the one’s I find wholly unnecessary and thus a reason for the “they have so much toughness sustain what” comment; just those kind of things outside of the examples I’ve given. Similar to the issue with how some of the talent placements are at the bottom of the tree by the keystones are just a bit weird, but seeing as I’ve labelled that specifically an issue, it’s not pertinent here and is its own discussion.

I think that covers almost everything from what I remember seeing over the months, and mostly what I see myself now both on here and in-game; There’s a possible couple of bits more but this comment is already long enough and should do a good enough job (I think :joy:)

To me, it seems these are the main reasons why people tend to have a mindset of brushing off the class and its performance overall, when in reality it is so much more than what we see in 99% of cases, especially in the hands of a skilled player; it’s just that, again, it has a very obvious, um, “widdle baby mode” build that lower-skilled players tend to flock to.

Anyway, TL;DR: As I always say, Reject the meta, Reject the sickeningly OP outliers, Have a cracking good time. Oh, and reject that “it’s just Vet 2” narrative that pops up. Do that and you’ll realise there’s a surprising amount of fun to be had in general

I hope that helps put things in perspective somewhat

You didn’t ask but here is my contribution

Things you won’t do as Arbie: topping monster damage (unless many things go wrong)

But you can reasonably expect to deal respectable boss damage in melee or with bleed bolter. Bop it in the face with any weapon that has skullcrusher on it.

Getting headshots with the shotpistol and shield is also an option.

Mk VIII shotgun also not terrible headshot damage if that floats your boat.

So here it is: Damnation High Intensity with the build I described in the thread. Note the episode starting at 13:08 — that’s where I would’ve run into some problems if I had been using a Shock Maul

Absolutely brilliant. I’ve only just loaded in, and I already have only a quarter of my health bar left. Thanks for not dropping me in with one hit point. I’m being deployed straight into the fight as reinforcements! During the drop, 10 seconds of invisibility and invulnerability are absolutely necessary

“The correct build”. Pox gas/corruption damage talent is overrated. I used it to finally finish 50 pox gas missions by just playing Arbites in every single one of them with this talent on.

One could make a case for using True Grit instead, just to prevent Pox Burster and Sniper oneshots. But either way, this layout is good.

15% on heavy is not that good of a node, especially when you have 15% on first enemy hit and 30% impact next to it.

15% movespeed when hit by ranged attacks is underrated, especially when using shield. It makes you zoom and close in on Gunners while holding shield.

Both have same bonus.

Also doesn’t fit some weapons. Some of the weapons you light attack much more, only using heavies for Crushers and bosses. 18% weakspot damage is just infinitely better in 90% of the cases and 30% damage/30% damage reduction from bosses as well, since bosses is the only enemy in the game where you can’t “waste” additional damage.

That 30% impact on the node next to it is very useful in Havoc, since it can be a difference between stunning the rager and getting hit by them.

Aim for the pimple from the front/sides, not necessarily the mouth IIRC.

You can do this with melee too, shove your hand in there and pop that pimple.

i know how to do it with melee but i never noticed the pimple xd, i’ll look harder for any pimples next time lol

Reduced corruption damage is there because I couldn’t decide where to put the last point lol.

I just like this stat spread because you can take a point off and stick it anywhere that suits you, including switching between both of Arbie’s keystones.

Especially not as ogryn

The back weakspot is commonly referred to as “pimple”.

More power to you! I find them just annoying with their slime and janky tail attacks.

I know what you mean but Iv managed to get the dodge timing to avoid all its attacks most of the time. The Spawn Im still learning but Im getting there.

If you are on PC I highly recommend downloading a creature spawner mod and practice in the psyk.

a 45° stance and waiting for the butt-dance to pass works most of the time.

I like to couple it with an “annoying charge” to keep it interrupted and whack its back/retreat, rince and repeat

then there’s moments when the server literally zooms the slug onto you even if you hoof it at full speed.

so beware the snail-jank :squinting_face_with_tongue:

Thanks a lot for sharing the video!

After watching the video, I noticed a few things that might help you improve even more. None of this is meant as criticism, just small adjustments that make a big difference with practice:

  • Your FOV looks a bit low. Raising it can make the game feel much more comfortable and helps you spot threats and objectives faster. ( or i’m seeing it wrong )
  • Try to use dodge-sliding more often. You take quite a bit of chip damage, and dodge-sliding is one of the best ways to avoid that, especially against gunners. You use the tech at the end when carrying the barrel, so you clearly have the movement down, now it is just about using it more regularly.
  • Your ability is very strong against shield Ogryns. At around 01:32 you had a good opportunity to use it, and at 05:08 you used it really well. Just try to lean on that tool a bit more, because it makes those fights much easier. You get a damage boost when you use it. ( same applies to your grenade or mine about using more often)
  • And if you ever panic or get overwhelmed for a moment, don’t hesitate to block. It buys you time and stops unnecessary damage.

The fact that you’re asking for feedback puts you miles ahead of people who only complain. you’re doing fine and you’ll get better quickly with a few tweaks like these.
