I’ve edited my post to clarify that you didn’t somehow remove anything from my post, but simply did not include the next line in my argument, thereby missing my point entirely, in your response.

i didn’t miss anything, i already answered it way up in this discussion? thats the whole point why brought it up as a obsolete question to ask, to begin with…
since you apparently haven’t read (even tho you quoted it?) here:

in the nature of the way content gets released.
a game that hides dozens of game feautures worth of DLC content behind a paywall on release is just as exploitative as if it were cosmetic content.

but that was also not the case back then.
you had a fully functional game with ALL its features, and AFTER a lenghty period (half a year to a year, you got a DLC expansion that maybe costed half the Title price or something)

so the big difference here is the amount and period in wich you even could spend money on said product. you always had a downtime in wich it is impossible to spend more.
there’s a difference if you can/have to spend 150€ over the span of two years, or you spend 50€ have the option to spend 5k day one “only if you want” ofcouse

or if you bought the entire game with all its dlc, you clearly saw how much you were paying for the whole deal.
this is not the case with with MTX,
not once did i saw a MTX store in wich you could obtain everthing within, for prices similar to the cost of WHOLE games before mtx was a thing (maybe deeprock but that be a stretch)
because that would defeat the whole purpose of having it in the first place, wich isn’t to be able to support the rest of the game for free, or give people the choice how they wanna look.
it never was and never will, its a carrot on a stick.

and its naiv to think it ever was a system in favor of consumers.

Hard disagree. Game features = the actual game. Cosmetics = optional DLC.

I’ll re-state that I don’t find the cosmetic shop overly exploitative, but then I don’t value premium cosmetics very highly.

This is a really good point. However, I’d say this is a win-win so long as you can swallow the microtransactions pill.

Win: Fatshark can raise the ceiling of the money they make from individual players without fracturing the playerbase. You might even say that people can give money to Fatshark for continuing to develop a game they enjoy.

Win: Players who have bought into the game initially are not forced to spend more just to keep playing the entire game. Again, I consider cosmetic-only DLC to be a trivial part of the game experience.

The way I see it the only loss is for people who are irresponsible with their money and people who wish they could buy premium cosmetics but can’t for whatever reason. I fall into the latter bucket, where the cost/value proposition does not compute. If you’re in the former bucket, I don’t think blaming any game developer/publisher is going to solve the underlying issue.

Yes sorry this is exactly what I am trying to say. Sharing my feelings on the matter to provide some context on my thoughts, relevant to the topic at hand.

To be honest I’m with you here as well. I’ve been saying it’s a lesser evil than some particular bad actors out there but it still sucks.

Both of us have been turned away from engaging with the cash shop because of their shady practice, and I think that’s a positive. Our money is where our mouths are so to speak.

I’ll say that on the rare occasion that I’ve purchased premium cosmetics it was for Deep Rock Galactic, here’s why:

  • Offered for real money via Steam, with the additional transparency that provides via reviews
  • Competitive offering – skins and goodies for all classes, makes it feel like good bang for buck despite being a meaty fraction of what I initially paid
  • Feel-good-factor of supporting a company I respect and clearly pours their heart into their work

Save for the last one (I do think Darktide is a labour of love outside of the monetisation – not perfect but definitely special), Darktide fails to match.

I always wonder which model makes more money. I truly hope it’s the honest and accessible one, and for my part I hope my dollars help to make that true.

I think, in the end, people want to want skins, which is why the whole thing is depressing. People don’t ask to remove premium skins anymore, they just want them to be worth the cash. I hate having a bunch of different types of currency. Feels like a mobile game.

Lot of games currently let you earn premium currency very slowly with a season pass or the like with a little fomo thrown in to encourage you to splurge once in a while. The thing is, the game has to offer a wide range of cosmetics for this to even be an option. No reason not to have daily login bonuses or a season pass for this game. Melk is basically a poorly designed login bonus with a different wrapper.

Hell, why not give a free transcendent of your choice if you complete the melk challenges and complete the circle.
