Love this!
In short, I want Fatshark to remake the Mourningstar.
It has an uninteresting appearance. One factor is the “mall” atmosphere of the place, but it simply does not appear appealing. It is dark, industrial, and dready, which I get from WH40K, but when you have a player hub and have designed emotes that I assume you want players to use, you have to:
-
- Make the area visible enough so that other players can see the emotes.
-
- Make it so that players want to interact with the hub and each other in the first place.
This may not be the best concept for what I had in mind, but here’s a screenshot of Owlcat’s Rogue Trader. While the Voidship is dark and broody, it is also filled with warm colors, browns, and reds, making it appear a little cozy:
Arm wrestling, as seen in Monster Hunter, could be a fun activity while hanging out in the Mourningstar.
Drinking competition from Monster Hunter:
Some type of bar and the ability to sit in chairs. I understand that I am posting a lot of Monster Hunter images, but I am just trying to show what I would like to see done with the Mourningstar:
I understand that we are on a Voidship and it is Warhammer 40k, so it must be dark, edgey, and broody, but I want it to have a purpose as a player hub other than being a dark and boring walking shopping mall where nothing happens.
We are all familiar with Deep Rock Galactic, a player hub that is perfectly designed by not being too large, using warm, bright colors, and including both a bar where you can drink and dance and a shoot-put game.
Everything you need can be easily accessed here without using a Player Hub Hotkey mod:
I also understand that not everyone is as into RP as I am, and when I say RP, I do not mean interacting with each other via chat, but rather being given the tools to immerse myself in my character and escape reality for a few minutes/hours.
The current design of the Mourningstar feels exactly like a “game”; it does not draw you into the world, with menus scattered around as “shops,” and it completely lacks the appeal of, say, Necromunda: Hired Gun’s Martyr’s End hub.
Unfortunately, I could not find a good picture of it, and I am too lazy to reinstall the game, but Martyr’s End includes a shooting range, a bounty board (missions), Gladiatorum (Psykanium), shops (Brunt), and named characters such as Kal Jericho and Artificier (Hadron).
Obviously, some of those things are already in Darktide or add no value, but if I could have found a better picture of Martyr’s End, you would see that things are actually happening there, rather than being dead and boring like the Mourningstar.
The best pictures I could find of Martyr’s End on youtube; NPC’s standing and walking around, a bar etc makingthe place feel lived in:
The quality of the last image is terrible due to the player’s use of Motion Blur, but it can not be too difficult to simply place some cool NPCs that walk around on the Mourningstar (bounty hunters, rogue traders, whatever) doing things, right?
It breathes a lot of life into the world:
