mod that gives him this hat
Yea the mission would be no different if he wasnt there which isnt bad for replayability i guess, but by the sound of the dev post they put out they made out like it was gonna be a bit interactive with him.
They could have had a mid event where he is on a console and you need to defend him? Then u have to res him, if he goes down the progress bar stops until hes revived? Or an escort defend objective where hes on the move and you need to get enemies off him idk just something mildly interactive and new
From how they talk about this, this is going to be the start of a swagger cinematic universe where they use him as a recurring character to “drive the plot forward” or something.
But in practice it really feels like the bad fanfiction you get when you run out of money to hire dan abnett.
Seriously. It’s like:
God i hope not.
Look, im fine with new characters being introduced but it feels amazingly weak to introduce a very basic 1 note character like this in a story that has more interesting characters that just lack development. When we already have characters doing the “im mysterious bit” but better it feels very flat by comparison.
I actually that that was going to happen in the final event where he says “I may call on you”.
Turns out it just means he’s going to tell you what to do, not that he’ll need to defended or whatever.
I assume Swagger is Fatshark attempt at narrative gameplay. I don’t mind it as long as the core gameplay which is combat isn’t neglected because of it in the long run.
His drip looks like the starting set of death knight armor in the old starting zone in WoW and it makes me chuckle every time
I don’t know who that critter is, but it seems (unless I’m mistaken, and I could be) that Swagger’s code name in the code is “travelling salesman.”
So he’s basically the Resident Evil 4 Merchant.
Abnett has his fair share of bad trope-y characters and stories (Brothers of the Snake is a great example, literally couldn’t finish that book).
We also have Mat Ward, Our Spirtual Liege, as credited “Lead Writer”, so there’s that as well.
Both have some pretty derpy examples of character writing through history.
Don’t know that dude either, but maybe one of the devs (or writers or concept artists or who knows) does!
Like the security guards in Half Life! This would be awesome! They would oc have absolutely horrific deaths but you’d try and keep Dave alive as long as possible
Not enough knives!
Dares of the Immaterium when?
Coming back to this since I ended up playing it a bit more due to friends actually wanting to play Darktide which took me out of my since December Hiatus:
*Definitely not inquisitor Grendel (don’t care if it’s wrong phone spelling is being whack) as it’s heavily implied from past stuff that they are very hands off from both the way the Morningstar is ran and dialog
*In particular they KNOW they aren’t putting themselves directly in danger and are really annoying about it.
*They either worked with the crew of the morning star in the past OR are in a position of power themselves where they would have access to that information
This leads me to think about several lowest common denominator based on the 40k universe and other works:
-
Former Agent / Pupil turned Rogue Trader - It would give both a reason for the connection to past characters as well as motivation for wanting the Mobian steel (first to cut a deal, first to sell to other places) as they hit me with a “in it for themselves” vibe.
-
Actual agent that Grendel just didn’t tell anyone about - I could see this being a very real (albeit a little dumb) of a story reason. Inquisitor thinks a traitor is on the ship, does not want to risk information of the forge getting out early, decides to tell literally no one and instructed Swagger to do the same. Swagger can’t resist tipping his hat at times because he is a prissy little drama queen.
-
Inquisitor Swagger (not actual name)- By far the dumbest theory but still a technically viable one this is partly based on several plots from other games / novels based on the inquisition. The inquisition citing the importance of the forge sent 2 inquisitors.
He is either one that was acting pre-Mobian invasion or sent in after the war was going too slow. He was sent in on a clandestine operation and as a result didn’t have his own agents with him. Bonus points if there is also some mind scrubbing B-plot on either Swagger or Grendel’s part or both.
As a note I almost think Rannick and Swagger are the same voice talent which is deeply funny as this man is trying to out mysterious inquisition himself in a voice booth for probably half an hour or longer.
Disappointed by the non-interaction, uninspiring aesthetic aside. The voice acting’s good at least!
If you’re going to have a character in a mission, then DO something with that character!
- Make him shoot stuff – even if it’s from behind a bunker so you don’t have to do any fancy AI stuff. Give him a danger corridor or something. Even better, Sgt. Johnson that MF – how about some overwatch from above?
- Make him shoot stuff pt.2 – how about this dude covers your exit at the Valkyrie? He’s there anyway!
- Make him useful – it’s kinda cool that he’s in the control booth at the last event. How about he points to the next objective? Interaction achieved. Maybe I’m the only goof who can’t find the damn underground entrance (I’ve only played the mission a couple times OK!?), but I imagine he’d know where to go. It would be a cool useless feature imo!
- Do some crazy ghost move, you know that’s his style. For instance when you first see him at the start, if everyone looks away he despawns (puff of smoke optional). Kinda dumb, kinda cool.
- Put him in or around the map in other places – for instance the high speed tram car. Maybe he jumps off it at the end (whoa, sneaky blighter!) and runs off through a ventilation shaft.
Idk, something. You put him in a mission but he’s nothing but a walking vox. I wanted to like him (I liked the VO from the intro, OK??) but he’s just too bland and useless for me to care…
I think that’s kind of the issue.
Like I can’t tell if they actually know how dumb he kinda sounds in concept or if the joke is that they know how dumb it is but didn’t lean into it far enough for it to really hit.
Like if they want to make a riff on the mysterious inquisitor trope that every edgelord wanted to play on tabletop 40k rpgs then by all means but right now he just kinda hits weird.
Maybe when he gets more missions he will be more developed?
