Support for EAC on Proton/Wine

While it’s a long wait, as long as they are working on it, I’m content. From their side, I highly doubt enabling proton EAC is going to increase their sales, as most people will just use Windows anyway, so they probably aren’t rushing it with Darktide on the way anyways (let’s hope it’s enables by default for that game). And even if it’s as simple as enabling a button, there is a chance it’ll worsen Windows gameplay due to EAC being what it is (keep in mind most users will still be on Windows), so they probably don’t feel like taking quick risks without investigation.

But yes, having some updates on the investigation on the integration would be nice.

So we have performed all the requisite steps to have this work. We’ve ticked the boxes in the EAC portal, included the files in the appropriate places. Problem is, as you can see, it doesn’t work. We’ve been in touch with both third parties (in this case Epic and Valve), but we’re at a bit of a roadblock truth be told. Those who would work on really digging in to the weeds on this are indeed digging in to Darktide weeds, so aren’t able to spend sufficient time liaising with Valve and Epic to figure out why it’s not working despite doing what seemed necessary.

In short, work on this is on hold for now. We’ll bark up this thread should things spin up again.

Several users in the Steam forums (today, Aug. 4) state that Vermintide 2 now works in the official realm on their Linux computers. Quoting some of the reports:

Found an update waiting for me today in Steam to the Proton EasyAntiCheat Runtime. After finishing that update, set Vermintide 2 to use GE Proton 7-28 and was able to load into the official realm no issues. Seems to load with Proton Experimental as well but haven’t tested anything beyond that.

Using Manjaro with kernel 5.18.14-1 on AMD cpu and GPU.

Something definitely changed. Before updating Proton EAC Runtime, I couldn’t get past the ‘Backend rejected the challenge response’ error, but now after update, I was able join a match. So maybe the problems were at Valve’s/Epic’s end after all?

Flawless on Proton-GE 28 with a fresh install. Did an entire mission start to finish, and even got some loot (OMG) that I was able to put on my Elf. Amazing. Thank you FatShark!!

I did not touch anything in the files, even left the edge runtime thing alone. Reset prefix maybe?

These are my launch commands, I am running on Steam Native with only “DXVK_ASYNC=1 %command%” in the launch options.

Yeah, it’s alive!

And darn, this game is good fun

Steam-native with proton experimental works out of the box for me, including the launcher.

Sorry for the necroposting
But i thought it was better to add a reply here instead of opening another thread on this matter.

I’m one of the weird guys running also linux
And i played a lot on vermintide(Darktide too, but i prefer vermin) from my steamdeck and my linux pc. In the last year i could play when i wanted from my linux machines thanks to what you did back on '22, knowing the issues and limitations. I could play only hosting my games and also i coudn’t use my mods. The really strange thing is that if i join modded realm on linux user from the official realm can join me and play with me, even if i’m trying modded difficulties. But other peoples on modded realm can’t play with me if i’m on modded realm. (So i can’t really play with my group on modded difficulties) I think everything it’s dued to the EAC problem with proton.

Can i ask you guys to check this thing up again?
I can share video of the issues if needed.

I know that steamdeck support is not dued, but EAC on darktide works really well on steamdeck(linux) so i’m trying to ask for it again.
Thanks for reading!

@Fatshark_Hedge Want to have a look at above?

Hedge is no longer working at Fatshark, I’m afraid!

Regarding support for Linux (and the Steam deck) I’m afraid that our stance so far is that we have no official support and that we can’t afford to focus resources on adding that support. It’s possible that we revisit this stance in the future, but we can’t make any promises.
