Something has to be done about smite

I think you’re vastly overestimating the “support” part and how many people don’t use it properly, it’s like 90 99% misused most seem stuck in the erroneous “I’m Helping!” mindset which aggravates all the associated issues, it’s at the heart of the matter and the issues that were previously discussed here and the thread I linked for instance.

2000h in and I can count on 1 hand the smykers that didn’t just perma smite the entire match.

Yeah, edited. Offhand I remember 1 really great smyker clearly and maybe 1-2 more that melted stuff with it, everyone was a drag. I’m sure there must have been some more that used it appropriately and sparingly, but it didn’t stick in my noggin, probably because they mostly used a staff.

Then there’s my goto core memory and repeated anecdote about the xbox perma-smyker who kept going into turret mode and complain about being left behind. I (we) told him he didn’t need to do it, we had a strong group, and he can have fun with his staff or whatever to no avail.

I engaged a single crusher, a single rager and some adds off to the side and he rushed in and turret-smyked as I killed them, then he seemed to DC as he was typing “see? I saved you from that!”, I replied, confused, “from 1 crusher and 1 rager!?”. Then he seemingly DCed for 30s+ as he typed some self-reaffirming response.
We mostly ignored him the rest of the match as he was just a giant drag who dragged us down with him, it was smoother after that.

Stuff like this is the norm not the exception with smykers, sadly.

That’s a problem by itself. I win button which removes gameplay.

Biolightning is more brainless and op but it’s balanced by the playerbase having scary low IQ and just running right past stunned enemies

Ironically if Smite worked more like the Warhammer 40k Inquisitor Martyr’s bio lighting it would be less game breaking.

Making Smite more useful and less spammable is not “robbing players of options”.

the thing with “support” is that it’s not requested nor wanted as it “supports” no one.

power creep in its current state it’s like offering usain bolt to help across the street….

everyone can deal with everything on his own in 99%of the situations, maybe the odd net or dog removal.

and playing arbi even dogs aint something to bother anymore.

so instead of giving the enemy some epileptic seizure that more often than not irritates ones pre-aim, having them stop prematurely when the path was already calculated, maybe use something that gets stuff dead and others don’t have to clean up.

only “support” needed when playing havoc 40 with randoms would arguably be book and bubble for there’s no coordination or communication.

these do make for an easier run.

smite does not.

i’d rob no one, I just dont wait around for them to cosplay palpatine.

the “action” is what wins a match by getting stuff dead quick while moving forward.

moving being the essential part here.

sure, but it should not be viable on Havok 40

I’ve often joked, Ogryn should be able to pick up Palpaturret and carry him forward.

Darth Vader kills The Emperor final on Make a GIF

People who plant their flag and don’t move when they should have been the ruin of many a game, regardless of class or build.

And be able to throw the Psyker, love it

It would be better as a 3-5m pbaoe, it is only really game breaking as it has a huge aoe as it stands right now. When activated it keeps Psyker stationary or at most, walking pace, where they can also use other abilities when smite is activated and lasts for 7-10 secs and is on a cool down timer of 30-45secs.

As someone who likes to play tank and support roles in other games - support doesn’t work in DT, nothing works aside from pure and raw damage. I mean there are support abilities, but full support oriented class is just not efficient. Because attrition element doesn’t exist. Taking damage in DT isn’t ok, and you don’t want to deal with 8 red crushers, or purple bulwarks. So the game balance is pushing players to kill stuff fast when it’s spawning.

More on the topic - there is some weird thing, when FS add support/utility/healing option it’s always extreme.

Why Smite stunlocks enemies, instead of just slowing there movespeed and/or attack speed. Why do you need to turn off enemy ai in aoe with ability that doesn’t ask to aim neither has some finite uses.

Same with toughness regen - insta refill or refill in chunks, instead of regen boost.

Arbites mine atleast has charges. If Smite was like that - you place a small tiangle field, and lightning zapping between enemies in that field, it would be somewhat better. But still psyker has no proper casting-venting gameplay. It’s just a brainded simplistic loop that has no restriction and limitations. Unlike Sienna works in V1,2.

And when you have no restrictions and limitations you either end up things being OP, or barely do anything to counterbalance.

Arbi balance is another convo, but yeah the electro mines have maybe 3 meter range and charges. You cannot hold the whole game hostage by pressing 2 buttons for 30-40 minutes. You can save someone from a bad situation, but this has its limits.

Well, thematically correct:

Don’t at me. I’m just bored, goofing around with the melee Electrocute upgrades. They are actually pretty decent on a fast weapon which struggles with horde clear.

jokes aside, that gives me an idea for a Tac Axe build, thanks. That could be fun

What you’re talking about isn’t a call for reworking or nerfing Smite though - it’s call to nerfing Aribte and probably ogryn too, instead, lowering power creep across classes. Your initial assumption is also not entierly correct - it’s not just about whether or not others feel you are helping enough, it’s about what you feel too. And in 90% of the game (barring only may be higher Havoc levels) this can trump any other considerations. It’s just a game, it’s about having fun, for different people fun is different, many people like to feel themselves playing support role, for some of them at least it may be the only viable choice, due to issues they may have (bad reaction time, slow thinking, bad coordination etc - people of all ages and backgrounds play games nowdays); generally it’s easier to hold or press a button at a proper time than snipe things in the heads within narrow time windows. That’s where builds leaning more into support direction could shine. If they can’t due to power creep - power creep needs to be fixed, not the support builds existing called an issue.

Well, it was called “rework” initially, and reworks can be rather radical sometimes. Honestly, Smite can have some extra uses, except making it causing more damage may be. It comes from (I think) preplanned interaction with Psychic Leaching sub-talent of Empower Psyonics keystone. I think it’s preplanned because both nodes belong to the “middle-guy” of psyker, together with the Shield Ability which is also clearly of supportive nature. So the middle-guy seems to be the “support flavor” of psyker. And when Smite is combined with Psychic Leaching and Charged Up, you can quickly restore up to 60% of toughness to your squad by just pressing LMB a few times (with Smite you can turn the charges, up to 3 of them, into toughness pretty quick). What adds healing effect to your Smite, as an option, and is pretty neat. Those charges also can be farmed back rather quick, allowing you to provide consistent “toughness heals” to your group, theoretically.

You can also do it quickly with Assail - but Assail is generally used much more often, and much less controllable in that regard (it will burn those charges instantly when you need to kill a bunch of things, what is every 30 seconds, while Smite is - normally - used rarely, when you need to stop a heavy load of foes to let others finish them, spending just one charge on that), so less suitable for using as a heal option. This isn’t an obvious interaction and I don’t know if much people even use Smite like this, but it seems at least something tree designer had in mind - so strengthening this talents’ synergy could be one way of making Smite more viable may be? May be even allow a limited HP regen via such synergy? Who knows, could be a unique support psyker’s thing in the game.

Ofc this also is getting devalued by the power creep issue mentioned previously, what makes such support interactions much less useful - but again, the power creep is the villain here, not support builds.
