What exactly are you getting at?
They clearly aren’t entirely opposed to it since you absolutely can do that with the For the Drip mod.
They seem to be rather contrarian people.
Because they want to make money off recolors and variants
For the drip is a clientside mod
There’s no reason for them to do anything too it
Its effects are minor,
Your character looks cooler in the Morningstar and Valkyrie for you alone, and when ever something puts you in 3rd person during a mission
Making cool looking characters by actually making other cosmetics work together by not all being wildly differently coloured as they are base game to then take screenshots of for likes here.
As said the only reason this functionality isnt base game seems only so they can charge for full price reskins. But it’s weird because reskins are so limited a cosmetic gets like one reskin every 8-12 months.
You’re pretty late to notice this. A vast majority of premium cosmetics are just scrambled models with recolors ontop.
You wanna know whats even more funny? They don’t even have to manually recolor them. There’s a built in recoloring system in the game client that mods even let you access (For the Drip)
Which might explain why the shop doesn’t allow you to access all cosmetics at the same time…
I’d say that’s absolutely one of the reasons why. Fatshark knows it, too.
Honestly I’m interested in seeing what a post-Helldivers Darktide looks like. Overwatch has already announced a much friendlier battlepass, overhauled legendary skins, and all heroes for free in order to compensate for “Oh dang, a dev finally made a live service that isn’t expressly designed to hoover up money! The Prisoner’s Dilemma has been fulfilled!”
100%. If you use the check all cosmetics mod to look through e.g. pants models, you can see that almost all of them are just a combination of the same 3 pants and knee protector and boot models each. You can get a lot of combinations with a 3x3x3
Even the “high effort” ones like the krieg set are just recolored penance pants with a different set of knee protectors mixed in
It would be nice if HD2 forced FS to actually fix themselves as people flock to a more player-friendly game.
What you’re describing, without really understanding it, is called a socket system.
I’ve been out of game design for an age but the long and short of it is that once the sockets are set up you simply plug in different pieces!
Sockets are typically going to be locations in reference to a character’s model (or a specific part of the model). For example, the knee pads or the goggles our characters were. There are also settings for strength of an object, for example if you want it to flex with the character (as if it is cloth) or if you want it to stay rigid. You can also get into physics as to whether or not an object can bounce or rotate with the character’s movement (like the knives and grenades on our belts)
What we have available to us has been rather simplified. The human model heads seem to have 5 configurations:
Helmet, eyes, face, mouth & collar. They’ll also occasionally completely replace the head.
So why do we have what we have? 2 possible answers - as hedge it’s immeasurably complex. Essentially fatshark painted themselves into a bit of a corner in what they allowed for facial customization, especially on ogryns. Basically if they gave you all the options you’d run into a lot of clipping issues with models intersecting each other.
This will make you complain about the quality of the models.
If they limit the models to the ones they are making (which is possibly required by GW?) they won’t have intersecting models.
This will make you complain about the crummy level of customization available to you.
There isn’t really a win here, and I feel that is due to fatshark planning poorly when it came to future proofing their cosmetics.
Selling recolors though, that is scummy and as I’ve said before, for the drip should be built into the game for players to access.
