Slow down and stuttering

Issue Type (Required):

Performance

Issue Description (Required):

I’ve been experiencing slow down and stuttering for about a week. It’s borderline unplayable.
The game slows down/stutters for about 2-3 seconds, then speeds up for about 2-3 seconds. It seems to be worse during hordes, but other than that I can’t see any pattern.

I’ve tried everything in the “How to improve your performance in Vermintide 2” guide; disabled the overlay, disabled all mods, tried both DX11 & DX12, reinstalled GPU drivers, disabled all backgroud applications, lowerd the video quality, I’ve even done a clean install (and deleted the folder in AppData).

I’m at my wits end, and I’m starting to get really annoyed with this issue. Wasted my entire saturday evening trying to troubleshoot it. It would have been less infuriating if the game had just refused to launch.

What can I do to fix this???

[PC] Do You Use Mods? (Optional):

No, I don’t use mods

Reproduction Rate (Required):

Constant (100%)

Platform (Required):

Steam (PC)

Sorry to hear this. It seems that you’ve tried all of the solutions we would normally suggest.

If possible, could you please provide a video of the issue, and a console log from a session the stutters occur so our engine developers can take a look:

Thanks in advance!

Thank you for your answer.
I’ve been experiencing this for some time actually. But it’s always been fixable by running the game, standing in the keep AFK for 10-15 minutes before I start a game. Figured it had something to do with the shaders compiling, but it’s been a constant problem for about a week now.

I noticed that the issue is most noticable in the first minutes of the recording. It becomes noticable on video in the latter half of the video. But it’s noticable while playing. The game feels sluggish, the only comparison I can think of to describe it is that it feels like the refresh rate is really, really low.
The slow down behaves kind of like a wave. It slows down, only to speed back up, and then slows down a few seconds later. It feels kind of rubberbandy.

I feel like the video doesn’t really show off how it feels to play with. I hope you guys can see what I mean from it. Hopefully my desperate ramblings makes sense as well…
I’m unsure which of these console files is the correct one, so I’m uploading both.

Perfect, thank you! I’ve requested for one of our engine developers to take a look and hopefully provide some insight. It’s quite a busy period so it may not be looked at straight away, but I’ll let you know as soon as I have any updates!

Thank you for your patience.

No worries! Thanks for your help!

@iralion Our Engine Developer has suggested a few things.

Firstly, they noticed an error

15:26:54.502 [D3D12PipelineStateObject] PSO fail rate 522/528

Based on this, they have asked if you can try the following:

Check that your shader_cache.pipe_lib file is populated/present

  1. Press the Windows key + R
  2. Enter %appdata% within the search input and select ‘OK’
  3. Confirm if the shader_cache.pipe_lib file is present

If so, can you please try renaming this file, and then check to see if anything changes.

Next, please try lowering your Worker Threads to 8:

  1. Open the Vermintide 2 launcher
  2. Select ‘Settings’
  3. Lower the ‘Worker Threads’ count down to 8
  4. Save your changes

Lastly, they noticed that your current Windows version may be leading to instability. If possible, they recommend updating to a more stable Windows version to see if it performs better:

The version 22631 refers to a build number from the Windows 11 Insider Preview under the Beta Channel. It’s part of Microsoft’s development process for Windows updates.

Please let me know how you get on.

Thank you for the fast response!

I’ll give these fixes a shot and get back to you!

After a bit of testing, this seems to have resolved this issue.
I’ll do some more testing later tonight and give a more complete update.

That’s good news so far, fingers crossed!

When updating your GPU drivers in future, you may find a stuttering issue returns. Though it should only be temporary while your shader cache rebuilds. However, should the issue return and persist again please run through the same steps above.

The problem persists every time I restart the game. For about 5-10 minutes. It’s not an issue, since it goes away eventually. But is this related to the shader cache as well?

@iralion Hm okay. I spoke with our engine developer again and they think it could be shader cache related still.

They asked if you could do the following please:

  1. Look at the timestamp on your shader_cache.pipe_lib file and see if this gets updated when you launch Vermintide 2, load into the Keep and then close the game
  2. Rename your shader_cache.pipe_lib file, and ensure that the file gets repopulated when you launch Vermintide 2
  3. Upload your latest few console logs and we can take a look

Please let me know, and thanks in advance.

Okay, so I took a look at the timestamp of the shader_cache.pipe_lib file and it gets updated everytime I close the game.

I then renamed the file, and a new file appeared after launching and closing the game again.

Here are two console logs, one before renaming shader_cache.pipe_lib and one after I renamed the file.

Thanks @iralion! Our engine developer has taken a look, and the behaviour with the file renamed and recreated appears correct. However, there is a failure or something possibly wrong in the process in the second log. We’ll need to add further improvements to our logging so we can get better information from console logs to dig deeper into this.

This isn’t something we can add immediately, and will take some time to create and implement in a future game update.

In the meantime, the developer suggested the following:

  • Check again that you have latest Windows updates installed
  • Remove your current GPU drivers using a reputable driver removal tool e.g. DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller), and then reinstall fresh latest drivers
  • After doing the above, if the issue still occurs with DX 12, please try switching to DX 11 again

Thank you so much for all your help!
I’ll keep the Windows version and GPU drivers in mind.

If I don’t hear from you again soon, I wish you and the engine developers a merry christmas! :smiling_face_with_three_hearts:
