I would say that Smite is best used as a stunlock ability that should ideally be used under pressure situations. i.e. when a pack of elites, specials (or both) descend upon you.
It has little value as a horde control tool.
This penance encourages the latter. Stunlocking 40 pox walkers while someone burns them completes this penance faster than holding up a pack of 6 crushers.
I would recommend it is changed to total-count the killing of stun-locked elites and specials. Maybe 750?
Much as the assail unlock is non-trash related, so should this be.

Regardless, just saying that if the purpose of these penances is to encourage players to experiment with different builds and playstyles, then this is a bad one.
I mean itâs a completely working setup, if a bit boring.
Empowered Psionics skyrockets smite damage, paired with venting shriek youâll constantly have EP charges and melt everything incredibly quickly.
Rotation: Have EP charge->Smite until almost full with peril->Shriek->Keep smiting-> Everything is dead (and you are full with charges).
No need for any damage from teammates. You just melt hordes and worst case scenario youâll get like 1000 kill count for the penance (on auric).
You can pair with Voidstrike (only for far away snipers) and DS (to stab Crushers) and you are basically unkillable with a ton of damage. Boss damage is low tho.
Sometimes people come here suggesting changes they think may benefit the greater good, rather than e-peening the fact theyâve put a lot of hours in before the new penances actually came out.
Same thing as with the penances for stun grenade and smoke grenade.
Players are encouraged to just spam at hordes.
These penances should teach proper use of the tools, not bad habits.
It would indeed be more reasonable for the penances if FS were to reduce the number of targets and restrict the targets to specials and elites (or ranged units in case of the smoke grenades).
My idea for improving the penance was to kill enemies knocked down by Smite with your primary or secondary weapon. This teaches players that you donât have to keep them stunned forever, merely enough to take control and deal more damage with your proper weapons.
Some would argue that clearing the horde yourself helps the team clear the horde, and smite is a poor way of doing that.
Which is really the point I was trying to make about this penance. You can purge the horde with purgatus staff, or soulblaze vent, or illisi sword for example. Whereas locking dangerous elites is I think a better use of this skill, and deserves a penance that attunes players to doing this with the blitz.
