Please make them scream when and only when they charge a player, or ‘enter combat’ and get into a player’s los. Something so they’re not screaming into your ears for their entire life. Every time they spawn in it feels like they start screaming in your ears and never stop.
My experience with mutants in the game
One spawns across the map: HWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. HUUUUUGH, HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH. MWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
Decides it’s worked out how to get to you: HWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. HUUUUUGH, HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH. MWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
Opens the first spawn cuboard: HWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. HUUUUUGH, HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH. MWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
stops to have some tea with a poxwalker: HWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. HUUUUUGH, HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH. MWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
realises it’s late to the fight: HWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA. HUUUUUGH, HUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUGH. MWAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA.
You get the idea.
They already have the very distinct spawn sound and loud, heavy clunking footstep noise so you know one’s around; the cherry on top of the audio assault is they often come in groups and/or the spawns are staggered so you get a chorus effect or just as you think you won’t be having that screaming in your ear for the next minute it kicks off again!
Interesting. I agree that it’s annoying. However, I think mutants charge as soon as they spawn. They’re gonna run until they are blocked, pick a new target, and charge again. Or if the target becomes invis, they will pick a new one and charge again.
I don’t think mutants have to be close enough (to a certain distance) to start charging. They charge as soon as they spawn, and that’s why we hear them from miles away.
TBH the mutants in this game are just a pale imitation of the chargers in the OG L4D2. Those ones could only charge in straight lines and thus would only scream when in an attack animation, which gives players a sound cue to avoid them. Darktide mutants either turn corners like inertialess ballerinas or bonk their heads a dozen times just trying to navigate a staircase.
I think a good compromise would be to have them shout once, then only play the charging sound when they either have direct line of sight to a player, or are within 20 meters (which is a pretty long distance in most DT maps).
It’s ok most of the time, it just gets really annoying when a mutant rather obviously gets lost, and you hear him shouting in confusion for upwards of a minute.
That weird feeling when you’re suddenly grabbed and you think to yourself “Finally!”.
but seriously, if FS is going to tune it, I hope they be very careful with it. I rather hear the annoying sound than unable to detect where mutants are. Having a bad experience with Burster inconsistent beeping lately, I’m worried.
I agree, it is such an annoyance and really lessens my enjoyment of the game overall.
Would even go so far that we might not have needed an audio buff for the other specials if the mutant just didn’t have top priority on the Vox-channel.
A pity that the consistent sounds are the ones we don’t want to hear so much.
Or maybe the Mutant’s screams are just as inconsistent, and we don’t notice because we’re relieved when they shut up for a bit.
