Penances are so bad that i just joined a random game, where 2 psykers said they will not move untill they get a penance. holding me hostage now

penances are so badly designed that the penance hunters are holding me hostage right now, i cannot play the game because these 2 guys refuse to keep going with the mission untill they get the “ledge 20 mobs” penance - i left the game but the game will NOT allow me to join another, because i am currently in a session already

this is HORRIBLE design, i have basically been griefed and its almost like it is intended

Unfortunately that particular penance is pretty much only possible through planning and on specific points. The start of Chasm Logistratum is one of those points. I hope they change it to something more meaningful like a total number of kills via yeet but for now that’s how it is.

honestly they should disable penances for now, they are a extreme problem to game quality.

I think that’s a very hyperbolic statement – only a few are problematic and they are miles from crippling

You have no clue of the psyker ones if you talk like that.

i disagree, most of them don’t evolve around optimal, team winning gameplay, and are very specific tasks no one would do unless theres a penance directly asking for it.

Do you want me to show you my hood? its dope

There’s nothing wrong with that, it gives you some objectives. Its all about timing

Welcome to a Fatshark game. Enjoy your stay.

Na, I got it already, thanks, does not mean I’ve enjoyed them.

Agreed. Been online for 3h. I’ve only found Zealots trying to exploit a poorly thought out penance labeling in Damnation.
Annoying

Penances need to be reworked. They encourage griefing and toxicity. FatShark claimed the scoreboard was too toxic to be left in the game, but penances that actively reward you to not work with your team isn’t toxic?

Make penances something that benefits the team. Not shooting in Malice and above for Zealot doesn’t help my team. Waving everyone off to solo a monstrosity doesn’t help my team.

If FatShark can’t think of any penances that encourage teamwork, at the very least their penances shouldn’t actively encourage players to be toxic and reward them for uncooperative behavior.

“Blast away 10 monsters within 4m of an downed ally”
“Kill 10 elites using a ranged weapon while they are attacking an ally”
“Charge and kill 10 enemies disabling an ally”
“Mitigate/Deal 10.000 points of damage through allies using the coherency buff”

2min of reflection time

Just wanted to add my support for this thread. I hate the penances right now.

How in the ever loving heck are you supposed to kill a monster with only brainburst and no one else doing any damage with randoms? It’s beyond stupid.

Just throwing more fuel on the fire. I would literally rather have every single penance removed and all items awarded for them (or, also, removed) than have the current system. It promotes toxicity, encourages griefing, and in general is not a fun system to interact with. The game would be better had this system never been added, and it’s amazing that fatshark managed to make challenges that were somehow worse than the most frustrating challenges in VT2.

I cannot stress this enough. The Penances, as designed, actively make the game worse. Not better.

It is intended.

They knew people would do this kind of thing, and made their penances specifically so that people would act like this.

Either that or they don’t understand their own game and the people who play it. Actually given how darktide ended up I’m not sure which one it is?

I’d say that it’s something simpler. Hanlon’s razor states: “Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained with stupidity.” Now I’m specifically not calling Fatshark devs stupid, but rather drawing to the idea of this adage.

Specifically, a lot of these challenges sound cool. Soloing a boss? Pretty neat. Knocking a bunch of enemies off a cliff? Fun and simple provided you have the correct tools. Not getting hit in melee? Pretty interesting if you have short enough maps and competent AI that doesn’t constantly backstab you.

The thing is, developing a game often has the left hand not talking to the right. Things change. For example, Preacher only works in a game where toughness has no bleedthrough damage. Otherwise a core component (lower health = more effective damage and such, death save actually saving you) is completely shut down. Some dev, at some point, made this change without understanding what it would mean for Zealot.

And I imagine a lot of this is basically that. Soloing a boss as psyker is actually rather fun. Doing it with brain burst? Fun, ish. Doing it with a 45% BB instead of 25% with a 50% reduction ult instead of 100%? Much, much more frustrating and terrible. In a coop game instead of a standalone challenge in its own unique map? Devs, stop, you’re trolling at this point.

That’s kind of the issue we have at the moment. A lot of these challenges sound good on paper, probably were fun at some point, and then as the development process slowly iterated the game, these challenges became progressively worse, and worse, and worse. Until we’re left with really poorly thought out challenges tuned a little too tightly that just aren’t fun to play but can be rather easily verified to be working by the devs.

I’d love to solo a monster, but I’d prefer having a Psykhanum scenario where I can do it for the challenge. That sort of thing.

Absent that, the challenges need to change.

your right, doesn’t help that they are most likely in hyper crunch mode and have zero time to look over every little nook an cranny to find those correlations, that being said i don’t want to excuse them.
