I will watch the stacks as indicated get to 5 (which almost always requires at least 6 heavy swings into a an opponent(s) and I’ll practically solo 2-3 hordes and come out with like 5-20 kills under the Pennance.

Enemies dying to bleeds (Batter) do not count towards the penance.

And as far as OP is concerned: Haymaker instakills don’t count for the penance either, arguably for the same reason why they don’t proc certain talents: They’re not considered (heavy attack) melee kills.
