Only in Death Does Duty End

I really liked the novel, mainly cuz of what happened on that moon afterward, you know what I mean. The courage :fist::pensive:

Some one who write for 40k also has to know that it has happened before.

Cain, Gaunt, Yarrik…

Like Commissar start outside of the common chain of Command, but it’s not unheard for one to then lead their own peloton

Yes, tell us why the heckies an imperial commissar was put in acting command of an entire regiment when there’s multiple ranks of officers that are supposed to be promoted for these purposes, with no questions, and why they’re no loitering by part of the ogryn’s snack stash on the Moriningstar instead of properly acting their leadership position for the entire 53rd.

Odd… This doesn’t sound like a Solo Mode

of course not, it’s something that works in darktide.

I mean yeah, we both know that. I also referenced in that same post another example. One where, in a desperate situation, a Commissar is given active command over a penal regiment, so that the Cadian commander can focus on his own forces. It works well in the story, and has clear logic. I’d say the same about Colonel-Commissar Gaunt, nice clear logic to how he ended up in that position.

Just, you know, gotta be clear in ones understanding that it isn’t the norm though.

Wait a freakin second:

Who does she not trust?? The Inquisitor?? HUH? But, he’s an Inquisitor, working for the Inquisition, working for the bloody Emperor.

What in karks name is this meant to be?

Given we are all convicts the commissar is probably right not to trust us at least…

Concerning the Grendyl: Dukane could easily mistrust their methods (trusting highly sensitive missions to small kill teams of convicts). That said the lore is full of inquisitors turning rouge one way or the other - so not fully trusting an inquisitor can also make sense for a commissar as long as she is smart enough to hide her mistrust until she pulls the trigger to stop treason…

No one trusting anybody? Everyone seeing heresy everywhere? Sounds to me like the imperium of men

Look I can get with the idea that you would be wary of an Inquisitor. But, it is common knowledge in the Imperium, that the Inquisition serve as the Emperor’s eyes, and root out evil.

It is not common knowledge that Inquisitors go rogue. At all. That stuff is kept very, very quiet by the Inquisition.

In a novel I read recently, a ship captain is utterly astonished that the two Inquisitors in the system don’t work together, and in fact don’t trust eachother at all. The captain was stunned at the idea that there are sects of varying philosophies in the Inquisition. He thought they were all a big, happy, heretic hunting team.

So it seems very reasonable, and fairly well supported in the lore, that the view people have of the Inquisition is carefully fostered and controlled. Fear the Inquisition, don’t suspect them, for they are the Emperor’s eyes.

Logically, Dukane would be enforcing a fierce loyalty to Grendyl, since they are the closest representative of the Throne in the conflict.

It’s probably similar to the way interactions between soldiers and intelligence agents are sometimes portrayed. The soldier is “honest” and has a job to do while the spook keeps secrets and pursues a parallel agenda.

Except the spy in this case is an inquisitor who might decide to requisition or execute your troops for any reason or none.

grendyl could execute dukane without any reason given, i don’t know why the wrote her like that. someone on the writing staff may have rushed this because outside of the guard structure the commisar does NOT have a whole lot of pull in the grand scheme of things and being on a rouge trader ship hosting an inquisitoral warband is like being a frog in a crocodile pond, sure you’re a predator but your nametag says “Snack” and you threaten nobody of notice.

I interpret it as naivety / overconfidence. Possibly because I used to work with someone uncannily like her.

It’s all there in the teaser video. She’s assuming command of the combat zone. Rannick’s reaction is basically “lol OK, let me get some popcorn!”

I like the idea of more narrative missions and there’s a great segway into rooting out more insidious traitors with the new mission. Obviously they had some ears on the situation moving to intercept the 53rd almost as soon as they arrived. But Dukane would be 100% improved if she just blammed Hallowette or some other garbage NPC before then. And blam the next traitor too, they will surely have earned the emperor’s judgment.

Don’t ask questions. Just consume product and then get excited for next product.

Not trusting them, is one thing, having leave to just set up shop on the bridge of a Ship under command of the Inquisition with an eye on the Operations Table? That is a whole different story.

I mean, i assume that is meant to be her on the right side of the Morning Star… she apparently not only set up shop off planet but also ordered a whole console removed and the bridge significantly altered to accommodate her.

By the looks of it, her “torso” is an armored breast plate. So she probably is subject to the same rules as everyone else… just knows how to dress to impress.

Its pretty funny when you put it like that!

Currently one of my remaining biggest issues with this game is how we’re getting lore and information about new characters and such in blog posts on a forum. Or short videos on the youtube channel.

Instead of, you know, in game. I’d have loved to see a cutscene or something introducing her. Having to look up new lore/story developments on the forum doesn’t particularly keep me engaged or makes me care that much about it.

I know sometimes there’s character interactions during missions over vox and stuff, but if I’m playing Auric damnation I’m not really listening to what people are saying if it gets hairy.

Yeah, more in-game lore would be great.

Don’t get me wrong, I’d love to have also good read on the forum, but what is shown here should be deeper. Let me paint the picture: introductions, first interactions, cooperation during assignment - that should be in game. On forum and youtube we should get info which is inaccessible to rejects Rejects or Acolytes.

You know what? I’m not sure if FS is not actually dealing with it right.
From Reject or Acolyte point of view, “oh great we got another mouthy karker to muck us about”, “yeah, yeah I don’t care - show me what to kill”.

Hmm… mixed feelings about this one to be honest. Wanna create topic about it in general discussion with some ideas how to deal with it right?

Erratum:

Rejects and Acolytes!

@FatsharkStrawHat So, totally happy with the Unlocked and Loaded update and having a good time with it. But also… what do we get to look forward to next? Any chance you all can share a quick update soon on what plans are? Can we expect any other content updates before the end of the year? We’re eager to hear! Thanks.

Happy to hear that!!

We have more to look forward to before end of the year in terms of content! I believe we’ll be able to start talking about that before end of this month. I’ll share as much as I can before then.

There will also be a Darktide 101 blog this week on the Sound of Darktide that’s a pretty interesting read.

we’re still rejects. we’re just upgraded from “guy Zola found we’re gonna get killed” to “sanctioned guy we’re gonna get killed” we are not proper members of the inquisition, we are the meat for the grinder.
